The track was inspired by a friend of Yebba’s who was in an unhealthy relationship. “As soon as she had a baby, her husband started beating her,” the singer-songwriter explains. “Because I’ve never been married and I’ve never had a kid, the best way I knew how to tell that story was to describe how I feel when I’m blindsided by a relationship, and the shock that comes with that. I walked into this space in my mind where I find the one I love in someone else’s bed, and my mind goes right to violence. It’s the kind of thing where you have so much comfortability with rage, you’re able to think through it logically-like: ‘If I shoot him in the stomach, I’m gonna have to pay his hospital bill, so fuck that. If I shoot him in the head, then I could be convicted of murder. So what am I supposed to do?’ It ends up being a picture of running with your rage, and just trusting that karma will come back around and take care of things for you.”

Tiny Desk concert for sure, which is on youtube, and is where she really finds her songwriting skill and her mature voice. A couple of other great performances, like everything else, are "Evergreen" and "Smoke". Love your reactions. THere will never be another "My Mind" but there is an entire catalog of greats building. INSANELY TALENTED, once in a generation!

Everybody's hung up on every single lyric. I find Yebba's lyrical composition is always looked at compared to the plain sh* that a lot of artists put out. Yebba is pure fire because of vocal capabilities, she's different because of her lyrics and maan she's been killing it with these musicians. I mean KILLIN it.

"EVERGREEN", a song done in a church is very good. Her mother committed suicide a short time after " MY MIND". One of the songs in the TINY DESK CONCERT is about her. There is also a song, October Sky, and she did a song with Ed Sheehan.

I'mma go dig in your videos... the album Dawn is out, it's the whole process of healing from a bad relationship, mama's suicide and all the unpacking of that plus finding a glimpse of future fame. It's a tough listen and she asked us all to listen top to bottom of the album once. The trick for her is going to be getting out from under this emotional bomb so that she can just shine... :D Thank you for letting her talk to you in this new voice, man. I love the look on your face when the shoe dropped and you felt this new emotion from her.

100% with you on My Mind being the benchmark. The problem is ‘the music industry.’ It’s all too much. Strip it back - that is Yebba’s Power. Too many players dilute the power, Yebba gets lost in the mix. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a Sanger! But, this is more Movie Soundtrack than the raw passion of the singer with her guitarist. My Mind is up there with Nina Simone’s performance at Ronnie Scott’s in London of ‘For A While.’ Give that a listen...prepare to be punched in the throat. Note: This starts cold - zero intro, Vocals in. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6KUY52IjNGcqrM

I may know the exact reaction that you're talking about to the song My Mind. That so-called vocal coach sniped on Yebba's clothing, her vocal choices, and she honestly thought that she had some suggestions to improve that performance. She received so many comments roundly and unambiguously telling her exactly where to step and what to step into that I'm surprised she kept it posted. I don't remember what I wrote but I think I said something along the lines of if it was her (vocal coach) desire to be bland, uninspired, to have unwavering focus on the wrong things as well as having all of the life and honed technique "coached" out of her voice then she would have achieved her goal. On top of that, she had no place critiquing her clothing.
