Tbh I think Yeezus is just practically a different lane of music. Not entirely out of the realm of hiphop of course but most definitely not the Kanye that most of his fans was used to. Which is fine of course, but this notion that anyone that didnt like it at the time was just being a hater is completely bogus. When an artist shifts gears then it's inevitable that they're going to lose fans. Someone saying that Yeezus doesnt sound anything like College Dropout, for instance, but then not understanding why a College Dropout fan would hate it is baffling to me. Some people hate Yeezus and still do, partially because it's not their personal definition of what hiphop is "supposed to be." Should those people expand their horizons more, sure, but it wasnt and isnt blind hate against Kanye for them - they just genuinely hate the album.

On Sight might not be the best song on the album, but it might be the most important. Don't forget that before this album came out, people were clamoring for another College Dropout/soul sample type of album. So he says using a soul sample, in the middle of an electro-industrial track: "He'll give us what we need, it may not be what we want". Sets the tone for the rest of the album. This is NOT what you want, but it's what you must hear now. Looking back, he was absolutely right, he called a lot of shit that actually happened during this era.

ikr. it's really like a hero's journey story. you can't just look at each song individually - they each contribute a piece to the whole story. that's why i think the song order as it stands makes so much sense with on sight first. The first six songs show Yeezus' arrogant, callous, embittered side and Blood on the Leaves marks a shift with him showing more of his vulnerable and emotional side (with the exception of Send it up which kinda of acts like the final boss before the hero finally returns home with the treasure).
@Prodbyjah464

@@alandeutsch9987 I always thought the shift on yeezus conceptually was hold my liquor considering that song is him reminiscing on a relation ship he once had and tried to re kindle things, I see that song as his fall from grace from the god that was yeezus to the man Kanye, but who knows with yeezus anyways

I’ve done a ton of research into this album and analyzing the lyrics and for the longest time I put kanye west as the main character of the album but the whole thing has a narrative and he is playing a character within the story of the whole record. The character being “Yeezus” and he is portrayed as a narcissist, fast living, club hopping, rapper who is introduced to us in the first 3 tracks, tries to start a revolution in new slaves and fails, then in hold my liquor has a battle with his inner demons on whether to drink or smoke and also hook up with an ex girlfriend. I’m in it is addressing the sex addiction the character has, blood on the leaves yeezus is reminiscent over the failed relationship that he thought was going to be real and last forever. Guilt trip and send it up I interpret as him returning to the club life with this new found enlightenment and how it’s not giving him the same feeling as with on sight, black skinhead, and I am a god. The final track bound 2 is, in my eyes, the character Yeezus’ success in finding love and finding somebody that takes him away from the club lifestyle, of course this can translated to the fact that ye and Kim got together around this time so it’s probably extremely influenced by that, but the character in the album has found what he needed. i think this album needed all this time for people to truly appreciate it and kanye really said something abt his creative ability at a time where he was probably feeling the most lost. Of course I could be wrong but that’s just what I’ve gathered from my own listening and reading. The dissect podcast also did a great video on the album too that explains how the sampling in the record translates to the narrative.

My breakdown of Yeezus First 4 tracks: on sight, blk sknhead, I am a god & new slaves - we see this “yeezus” character who’s frustrated, arrogant, obnoxious, sex crazed as we see in the minimalism of the music and the lines such as “hurry up with my damn massage” like how can you hurry up a massage it’s impossible🤣 but he’s at this level of crazy confidence, he says in new slaves he sees the blood on the leaves, he sees what everyone else is doing. The next time you hear the term blood on the leaves is on track 7. Between that is hold my liquor, I’m in it and blood on the leaves: these tracks show that he is actually being effected by these materialistic items the most, the girls, the lifestyle, the money. Then from track 8 Guilt Trip To Bound 2 is his self realisation that he must go to the woman he loves and find his relationship with god

Glad for the positive reaction. This is an album of fire tracks that give your mind a chance to work. So much injustice he navigated to still create fire music. I seen him perform Blood On The Leaves on tv in the UK. OMG no lie it touched the heart
