Okay, gotta get technical here for a second- In f1 cars in engine modes, you can customize the throttle and engine linearity. This means that when you have the car at a specific rpm, with more than a specific amount of throttle input, when the car slows down at a turn and the rpms drop by a little but not enough to downshift, it's supposed to quickly pick up so that the acceleration is not as slow into the corner at that input out of the corner but you can only do this with a mode that's optimized. This is a driver aid that has been in f1 for quite a while. What most likely happened was that the engine did not get confused, rather it was that they did not optimize the engine mode right for taking it flat out. If you compare previous laps where he attempted it, there was an improvement but they were still lacking. This is probably due to either finding it too minuscule to tune or the wrong feedback. The engine wasn't 'confused' but it is indeed technical and hard to explain in a 60-second interview

this was my thought as well. Was wondering if the throttle trace with the TPS or the APP. Another thing to note is that going from 100% throttle to ~75% throttle at the blade is nearly no power loss. You don't see power really start dropping until around 50-60% typically.

I once worked with an older driver in karting who thought he was taking one corner totally flat. I was his mechanic for a Rotax national finals race and we were trying to find a set up that worked for him. He liked his kart to feel free with extra rotation, but this track had higher speed corners and you generally need a lot of support from the rear for high speed turns. I wanted to make sure he could take one turn flat so he did not lose any time, so I'd always ask him after practice sessions if he was taking turn 3 flat. He always said he was taking it flat. Throughout that practice we could not find a setup that worked. He was always .2 off the pace or more. Then after the weekend he downloaded and viewed his GoPro footage. He calls me up after looking at the footage and says "Oh by the way, I was lifting in turn 3." So some drivers genuinely either do not know, they do not have the mental bandwidth to understand what their body is doing as they navigate around the track, their ego gets involved and they just lie about taking some turns flat, or some combination of those 3 things happen. In George's case, I think he has the bandwidth to know what he's doing. But when there's a camera in front of him he needs to say flattering things about himself sometimes.

Probably because he didn’t make one. He didn’t downshift because he wanted to go flag. He also didn’t go flat because the car doesn’t take the input. Look at the trace on the API. it goes straight back to 100, throttle records by unit so we know he didn’t lift it was always there. My guess would be the lateral load was acceptable in 7th not in 8th and that’s the root cause. Not a mistake from George

So in theory the engine could drive itself? Told you I'm confused
@pianissimo71218 күн бұрын

i think Charles somethings like that happened in Las Vegas two weeks ago ,something about track GPS and engine mapping cause some problem?
@Monty35408 күн бұрын
@@bukwok Yep that is exactly correct and what happened here with George. It normally happens when the track in reality has more grip that in the simulations and driving in a higher gear is more beneficial. However f the map is not correctly set for that that gear to take advantage of the higher cornering speed, it doesn't deploy on the exit - which is what happened here. The Merc software is intelligent enough to keep working despite gaps in the data, unlike Fernando's in Spa - which shut off completely seeing it as an error.

Has it occured to some of you that maybe he does not shift down because he entered faster? So it isn't clear if he would have had to, if the engine had been set up correctly. Also if he entered with a certain speed, wich is on the limit of grip. A very small input such as a downshift will screw you. In the end it looks like he was right. If the engine hadn't given up on him his method would probably have been faster. Also the time mesurement in the video makes no sense because it doesn't take into account what he would have gained with his faster entry, so he has lost more.

Yes, you need higher speed for higher gear and there you can't be in 8th gear with that car. Not a big surprise, but interesting anyways.

His engine has been bullying him for many years now. "Someone needs to take a stand against that engine" 😂😂

Cool to see how keeping it flat in 7th kept the minimum corner speed up by about 10mph

Im no racing driver. But even I could hear that the RPM on his engine on his second flying lap was getting lower related to the gear he was in. I was watching and expecting to see if it would try to anti stall for him. And this is even before I read about him forgetting to downshift

I guess that’s the consequences of not keeping the engine at peak power when entering highspeed corners

Great video I love when we get the facts on the table. George has an interesting relationship with the truth. Keep up the great work

They only thing that is confused, is George himself. Max at least would admit he made a mistake.
