I love these guys, and Biota for doing it. I got my very first yellow Tang last month, a Biota aquacultured little fella. He's tiny and still semi-transparent. But, his behavior is defiantly a tang and he's been hardy. Spending his days foraging and picking clean the rock work. And as a professional conservationist (though not a marine one), I love that you focus on tank raised. Well done Sir

Those yellow tangs are awesome!! I can't wait til I'm finished building my 120 gallon! Definitely adding one to the stock list. A bit of a bummer they are so expensive now but when I think of them swimming the reefs in the wild I don't mind spending a little extra for captive bred.

Thank you for your transparency. I nearly cracked up on the JT COD line 🤣🤣 I say the EXACT same thing unboxing any thing for my reef tank or arcade stuff when it comes from the states. It’s so bad they’ll ship something from California to Ontario THEN to Vancouver. I call it Justin’s carbon footprint tax.

Both of my mandarins eat frozen & pellets. Mandarins from Biota are fed pellets as well as frozen & live per Jake at Biota, so they are already trained to eat prepared food. Do feed them several times a day while small per Biota. Would buy from them again in a minute!

I talked to a local LFS who has brought in a bunch of captive bred mandarins from the same source that you have March. He thinks his customers have about a 50% success rate because they are so small. Even though the vendor says they are eating pellet, you will still need to give special care, because their mouths are so small that they cannot eat regularly available fish food. Pods are pefect like you said, though not everybody has access to them. He has been keeping his captive bred mandarin inventory alive by feeding a marine snow type plankton mix (not live) from Brightwell.

I bought a spotted mandarin from March about a year ago now it was so tiny March thought they were all going to die, they were captive bred it ate all the pods in the tank then I started feeding it "cyclops" and it is always nice and fat and healthy! P.S. you can keep a mandarin in a small tank 10-15 gallon if it is well fed, if the tank is too big you have to put more food in so it gets enough to eat in a small tank it can find the food much easier.

Yea when I got in the hobby over 15 years ago yellow tangs were dirt cheap everyone had one or ten and purple tangs and other tangs as well were hundreds more than a $40 to $60 yellow tang. Also yes props to biota for taking this on because we wouldn't have yellow tangs anymore and that isn't a job it's a different life when you breed fish like that that take so much time and patience.
@Mike__B3 жыл бұрын
@@hunterh891 Not quite true, the yellow tang was primarily fished from Hawaiian waters because it was close and convenient, 5-6 hour flight to LA and they're in wholesellers tanks. They do exist naturally off the north of Australia's coast, up through Indonesia, Phillipines, pretty much up close to Japan. I'm pretty sure that's where people in that region of the world would get their fish from, and not Hawaii

Yellow tangs were a staple of the hobby because they were relatively dirt cheap compared to other zebrasoma tangs, maybe the scopas was cheaper but that was it, but the scopas is quite ugly in comparison. Here you could get them for $20-30US for small ones all day long. Unfortunately(??) when I broke down my 300 I decided to sell my fish (yellow, yellow eye kole, purple tang) to someone with an equally large tank and priced them to move fast, and it had to be 2 days after I sold them the announcement came on the Hawaii ban, and the fish almost instantly spiked to $300 a pop in some places (yeah who would have thought... there was so much greed in this hobby from stores and vendors? **sarcasm**). I felt a twinge of remorse since I sold the Yellow for $30 (it was XL in size) but it went to a good home so I'm fine with it.

A bit contradictory don’t you think! I am not trying to be disrespectful or mean but if you really love these fish, you should put your camera down and quickly unbox your fix than let them wait for another 20 min. It is only 20 min but it might be life and death for a fish in that box. the black bag is to keep the light out so the stress is less and you should really open them in a dark room with less light. Imagine you are in a dark room for more than a day and suddenly someone point a flashlight in your face, how would you feel. Anyways, I hope the fish are okay and hope you can get someone to hold the camera next time so you can give your full attention to fish.

You guys are probably my favorite reefing channel, but have to say I’m a little disappointed with the ‘gender doesn’t exist’ joke. It just seems kinda weird to be concerned about using swear words and then make a joke that perpetuates an ignorant stereotype that results in real world harm.
