Best rod comparisons on the web. Thanks for putting in the huge effort. I’ve read them all on your website.

4 wt. rods are awesome! I am finding that I rarely use my 5 wt. anymore. A 4 has got enough backbone over a 3 for slightly heavier rigs, then I go up to a 6 for bigger fish (especially smallmouth in my area) Personally, my 5 weight is now a "rod without a home"

Hmm.. I feel totally opposite. I love my 5 weight sticks! Sooo versatile. I sold my 4 weights, for I rarely used em. Out near the Intermountain west where I live, 4 wts have a hard time punching line through the constant harsh winds. Also don't own a 6 wt for there is nothing a 6wt can do that my 5 wt can't do for me, especially now with half size heavier fly lines. Besides, fast to medium-fast action 5 weight rods of today really have the strength of 6 wt sticks of yesteryear. I use my 7 weight rod & bodacious size streamers on occasions for targeting leviathan bows & lock levens on a specific section of a local "home"river at specific times of year.

@@riverwalker2173 With you on this. I use a 3 weight for small streams/small fish, 5 weight for medium and larger streams and normal size flies, and 7 weight for big trout flies and smallmouth fishing.

I inherited a St Croix 9’ 4wt and will be learning how to use it soon. Found this video very helpful and y’all gained a new sub 💯🙏🏼

Thanks guys. Got the Hardy Shadow on the strength of your review and it is excellent. Would have loved a Zephrus, but a bit rich for my blood. All the best.

Great idea, but if you are going to go through all of that trouble, why don’t you just give us all of your results printed below or show a chart of all of the rods you tested. Telling us “this is a rod we didn’t use” in our test is worthless information unles you tell us wha the rod is. I only heard you mention just a few rods.

I Love my Hardy Zephrys, 9'9 5 wt, while it's being repaired I'm looking for a back up rod.

How much weight do you place off the tip to create the deflection chart? Is this weight in direct proportion to the line weight?

Hello guys, at the 5:30 mark you comment on another rod you like, it sounds like you called it the "Orvis 3F", but I can't find said rod at Orvis? Thanks for any help...Kevin

The rod they are mentioning is the Orvis Helios 3F. The Helios comes in either 3F for finesse (more moderate action) or 3D for distance (faster action).

i wanna know what was too soft? i prefer slower rods. the slower the better. my 4wt dry fly rod is a 7'1" cabelas prime. its perfect for dropping dies in a most delicate manner. when i need to boost things up, throw a nymph in the spring, i use my 8" steffen rod.
