Yellowstone: Margaret & James Dutton's Death Explained!

Before 1923, all we talked about was 1883. Since the first prequel of the Yellowstone universe had the most tragic ending, we found it highly difficult to move on from it. 1923 started with a voiceover from Elsa. Just like in 1883, she made an introduction to the show. It seems like she will be a stable part of the Yellowstone shows from now on, and we are very much excited about it.

I loved James and Margaret and it was hard to imagine their actual deaths. I had come to this conclusion without it being clearly covered in the story line but this coverage really did help. Thanks!

I’m an actor on the new spin-off called Bass Reeves. True story. He was at the Battle of Pea Ridge. First black US Marshal that inspired The Lone Ranger after arresting about 3000 and dodging bullets. Can’t say how the story blends into the fictional characters of 1883. It’s going to be epic.

@Beth I found it confusing until I learned Jack's name is John (1923) clarifying who (Kevin Costners) john duttons father, grandfather was...I don't know how I missed they call john Jack in 1923 but I did lol...the family trees I am seeing online wasn't clarifying who Costners grandad was they were making it look like he was a brother to Jack or Spencer...a new one was just posted clarifying it...(I'm sorry I assumed what you were confused about, this was what I was confused about up until 2 days ago lol)

We need closure from 1883. I watched it 3 times and have questions. How did Sam find out Elsa died? Did he find James and Margaret? What about Little John? Why was there no character development for him in 1923? No mention of anything he experienced. We need an 1884. We want to see how they built up the ranch. Heck just start from Elsa's funeral forward. You got some great writing to be had.

I enjoyed this video very much. You expressed my feelings to a tee regarding elza and her parents. I was devastated when she died and was hoping there would be a second season showing her parents settling in their new place. Faith hill and Tim McGraw were amazing, but elza stole the show and I miss the character. Was thrilled to see her doing the intro into 1923.

Agree that Isabel May’s acting is great, but that accent is god awful. You’d think with real southerners like Tim and Faith, she could have done better. That said, I love her character and wanted more of that time period.

The tragedy at the end of 1883 with Elsa was a disappointment to say the least. The flashback to the death of James brings closure to his life but it also sets a prelude for the death of Margaret. A death that was entirely possible considering the time and location of the ranch. Yes I am a big fan of James, Margaret, & Elsa in 1883, which was a spectacular beginning series.

Actually I appreciate all these postings regarding these things we may have missed on the actual programs. I have actually rewatched a few episodes because I definitely had missed some of those explanations that were done if I really had paid attention. These postings have definitely made the history sequence easier to understand and follow along for the future episodes.

I really loved the entire story line of 1883. I loved knowing how the Duttons came to settle in Montana Yelliwstone. James died as result of a lethal gunshot wound not sure how Margaret passed. The brilliance of Tyler Sheridan's ability to take his audience in another place in another time is captivating. 1923 is just as amazing and Yellowstone well that just tells all of what he put so flawlessly together... I love the Prequels to Yellowstone 1883 and 1923 and I love Yellowstone as fiercely as I would like to have the Duttons prevail as they always do... the fight and the struggle they have everyday to make that happen. It reminds me how everyone no matter their station in life is all about surviving in the midst of their struggles. Tyler Sheridan makes those stories with interesting with twists and dialogues and that magic is introduced to the screen. ❤❤❤

I’m glad I’m not the only one that has some narrative struggles with 1923. My only connection is to Spencer and his girl. I do not feel anything for the ranch problems. 1883 the bad guy (so to speak) was the journey. The harsh terrain. The trail. It was spiritual in so many ways. This feels like a bad guy that is not near as threatening. And since was such a large time jump and new characters, with no conclusion, it’s challenging to connect. For me. I know many like it. But I preferred the struggle against the land and fight for dreams. And we didn’t get to see that move forward.

I feel the demise of James and Margaret were in theme with the show and realism. In life we don't get answers, we get a phone call and bad news. That's what the first few minutes of 1923 felt like; a family member calling and telling us that James succumbed to his wounds, and Margaret froze to death. It is sad, but it was a great way to start this show. We end up caring about Jacob before we even meet him because we know he traveled across the country, found his 2 nephews starving and cold with his sister-in-law dead, and raised them as his own. I can't wait for 1944, season 6 of Yellowstone, and 2024.

I will try to answer this question the best that I can. As played out and explained in season one episode one of 1923 James and Margaret had another son Spencer after Elsie‘s death. When James died and Margaret call James brother Jacob to come and help at Yellowstone. After Margaret died, Jacob and his wife took in and raised John and Spencer, who we saw in the flashbacks that were set in 1893. John married and had John Jr. (Aka Jack) sometime around 1900. In the series 1923 Jack steps up when his father John is killed in episode three. At some point Jake will have a son with in a few years of 1923( his wife lost their first baby) That will be John Dutton, the third, who becomes Kevin Costner‘s character’s father. Kevin Costner’s father has been seen throughout the run of Yellowstone. This timeline works because if Kevin Costner was Jack’s son form 1923, Costner‘s character would be in his 90s so we need another John (3rd) in between. That’s the character playing Kevin Costner‘s father who passed away last season. There are some flash backs throughout Yellowstone which shows Costner’s dad younger and a younger actor, playing a younger, Kevin Costner character.

Josh Lucas from the movie Secondhand Lions, plays the younger version of John (Kevin Costner). He's John at the age when Rip was found on another ranch when he was running away after killing his stepfather, for one example. Dabney Coleman (Dolly Parton's boss in 9 to 5) played the older version. Now that he's passed away, there may not be any flashbacks of "Dad".

​@@Mike-0201 And thanks for the family timeline with names. It's the one that makes the most sense. Some of the comments are adding a third James and Margaret son which confuses the issue. I bought the 1883 DVD because I didn't pay for Paramount+. I know that while Elsa was alive, little 5-ish year old John was her only brother. I'm in a couple of FB groups, (Yellowstone Bunkhouse and one that's simply 1883), where some people have tried saying a baby boy and John were both on the wagon train, which isn't true either. Sometimes, I wonder if they're even watching the same shows at all! In flashbacks on Yellowstone, Margaret and 2 teen sons are eating supper and discussing James chasing horse thieves, aren't they? And two sons riding in the snow with James when they meet the band of Indians that want their Elder buried on the ranch. In another, James is chasing thieves and gets shot but makes it home to die. So there's no third son that I've noticed. I've only seen the few 1923 shows that were on regular Paramount, I'm waiting for both seasons to be on DVDs. Your genealogy makes so much sense and fills in gaps for me. Thanks for posting it.

Sorry, but the way they died was realistic. This may come as a shock to you, but even in real life, everybody can’t have happy endings. Taylor Sheridan is NOT that type of writer, who once said his way of writing off characters was inspired by Game of Thrones. Elsa died by a poison arrow, James died from a gunshot wound, Margaret died from freezing to death, and John Sr died from being getting shot. These characters were not invincible. Agree or disagree, the facts are facts. It sucks, but these are facts. They weren’t going to live the happily ever after stories you were hoping for and die from natural causes. How each of the first Duttons perished was tragic, but given that even in real life back in those times when people were dying exactly how they died in the story, they were realistic tragedies. So, get over it. People can’t always have happy endings.

I love 1923 but it was a mistake to kill off James and Margaret Dutton. They were the two connections to 1883, and it would have benefitted this sequel series if Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren were cast as the elderly couple instead of a separate branch of the family that we never knew about.

And James was with her from their arrival in 1883 until 1893 when he was fatally wounded in the gunfight against horse thief's. In 10 years, they would have surely had rough winters together in Northern Montana and he would have shown her how to keep warm even in the coldest of days. That being said, you had to have enough firewood cut to last the winter, she might not have been able to do that type of labor herself with two young boys, but the people then had a grit & determination about them that today's people lack.

I can think of a couple of scenarios: Snow is so deep that you can't get outside You can't leave your kids to go as far as you need to to get wood with the snow. You risk freezing to death if you step outside. I'm certain that Margaret was capable, but I have a feeling that conditions prevented her from being able to do anything about her situation.

I don't get the comment on Elsa and folks turning on her character. I thought for the times, nothing was wrong with her accent as her mother wanted her to be refined but she wanted to be like her dad. I also thought that Taylor's writing and Elsa's on screen presence and reactions was spot on for a young child with nothing around them where they once lived to suddenly be thrown into and excited about the adventure in front of them. All while being naive enough to not really know the dangers that lie ahead of them on this journey. It's a life lesson to all young folks. What may be your journey and end game to arrive at the end of your version of success, not always comes as easy as your mind portrays, or as fun as the path may seem. I thought she put that on full display. As far as the actors who played Elsa, James, Margaret, Shea, Thomas, Claire, Sam, Josef, Wade, Grady, Ennis, Jim Courtright, amongst others all killed it. They were great. My true feeling when the last episode finished was , oh no, what a waste. Instead of a 10 episode series , Taylor you had so much more there to tell, so many great characters that didn't get to see the light of day past 10 episodes. It was so disappointing, but if the goal was to leave you wanting more, mission accomplished. Every episode of 1923 so far has been written like the last episode of 1883, leaving you crazy until the next week with access to more of the story. So yes as far as the question of the 1883 characters, yes they matter, they deserve a little bit more, and Isabel May, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Sam Elliott all of them killed it. Would love to see a fill in series with the folks who can return from 1883 to the storyline in some manner. And I know he catches hell on the internet today with all kinds of conspiracy theories and craziness, but It did stun me when Tom Hanks walked up to James while sitting in that civil war battlefield. That was well timed, well placed, well written. Bring us some more of this with 1923, The 6666's, Yellowstone and some more 1883 if only a two or three part, over three nights series release or something. I like the King of Tulsa as well. Stallone fits like a glove.Looking forward to another season of that as well.

I've traveled in Tennessee from one side to the other, no one I had chats with (friends, waitresses, store clerks, etc) even on the backroads of East TN on the backside of a mountain. (I drove up one mountain and there was a switchback so sharp, I had to back my Toyota to go around it!) In all that, I never heard anyone sound like her.

I always assumed 1883 would have more seasons. Doesn't make sense for it not to be. That we aren't getting them isn't just sad, it doesn't make sense. All we got to see were the first ranching Duttons reach the land that would be the Yellowstone, then the show just ends. All we see are cut up flashbacks ten years after that that don't have any relevance beyond showing us what leads to James dying, which I don't think anyone believed was his actual death at the time. How it was all executed just feels rushed, sloppy and ill written. There should be more to the story that we get than hearing about all these events off screen, as it would have been captivating to watch them unfold. But instead we just learn that it took only a decade for James's plan for the family to fall apart, kill him and his wife, and leave their children for dead if they hadn't been rescued. Fitting for the harsh times, sure, but narratively underwhelming.

To me Margeret Dutton ( played by Faith Hill) was the real star or 1883. Why she was not at least nominated for an Emmy award is a crime. But then I think, she was playing the wife of a guy that she has been actually married to for 30 years. So was she really acting or just playing herself. BUT it was a strong enough performance to make me watch out for whatever she is in next. I just pray she pick a good role in a good film. Because there is no amount of acting talent that can overcome: # 1 A bad script. # 2 A bad director. or..... #3 Just a bad project overall.

I loved 1883. Have now watched it three times. It's good to have some questions answered but what about the two boys who survived the freezing weather and being hungry - who raised them? There is at least a few episodes right there. I'm really enjoying all things Yellowstone but feel there isn't always the best of explanations for what is happening. Cheers.

I've only seen the few free episodes of 1923 that were on regular Paramount. But it's explained that the two teen boys left with Margaret when James died were raised by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren in the show 1923. They are John (the little boy from 1883) and Spencer (born after Elsa died and they settle on what becomes Yellowstone Ranch).

I think a second season to 1883 would have been great , given that the first ( and only ) season was their trip into Montana I think a second season would have give a lot more context to the Remaining Duton and the Ranch itself ... The season has it was made 1883 is the best among all They made so far but the Gap between 1883 and 1923 only happens cause they didn't do a second 1883 season to end it well explained ! 1923 is great as well but the Duton adventure into America starts in 1883 and those days were a lot worse and required a lot more personality and perseverance ... I don't agree with 1883 ending cause it only leaves doubts and that empty void of unexplained stuff cause it was ended in a rush !

Ain’t nothin wrong with Elsa’s accent. As a Southerner I cringe every time I hear a bad Southern accent. Hers was pretty accurate. And I loved her character. She was so strong and brave and adventurous

The industry should make a better effort to match an accent to the location of where a character is portraying. I didn't think Elsa sounded like she was from Tennessee though. Maybe a different part of the South. I'm from southern Virginia, raised and lived in only two counties that are about an hour from the third one I was born in. I traveled extensively all my life. (Daddy played minor league baseball, so we spent summers all over the US and in Manitoba Canada) Somehow, when I'm in South Carolina, people think I have an Alabama accent! I've driven through and spent one night in Alabama, lol. I had a friend in Virginia that was raised in Alabama and we sounded nothing alike... Back to Elsa, if she and her family's accents had been more like a Tennessee accent, they all would've been better than perfect. I loved the character, Elsa. I would've been her if it had been my family making that trip! I was a tomboy all my life, deer or fox hunting with Daddy, riding horses all day alone with my best friend without a care (in the 70s, we could do that in our rural county), walking or biking to wherever we wanted to go, I had the best life. I definitely would've been Elsa!

Sam Eliot, Tim McGraw & Faith Hill made 1883 the best one. They deserve Emmys. Wish there had been a continuation of 1883. It’s the series with the best story and what all others are based on. This may be an unpopular opinion but I could have done w/o Elsa’s narration. It was unnecessary and distracting. Also Elsa’s character was well written but poorly executed. Her acting was amateur.

I wished Elsa Didn't die. There was whole story that was left unsaid. The same with all the other cast members. There stories were abruptly ended. I do t think the ending of 1883 was written very well. Just like the last season of Game of Thrones..

Their deaths were cheap, poorly written, easy cost cutting and just lazy. After 1883's fine performance the story is tarnished by not connecting vision with the heart. Elsa's voice should have been added to the next person to take over telling the story of the family.

Or a voice coach that actually knew what a Tennessee accent sounds like. They could've at least trained her to match the area of the state they supposedly came from. I don't remember it being said what part of Tennessee they left other than Elsa on the train saying she'd never seen a sunset. She'd said the pines blocked the view up in the mountains she had lived in. There's a lot of mountains in Tennessee and they don't clarify what part the Duttons were from. I've been in East and West TN and driven all the way across it. I haven't heard anyone sound like her. Voice coaches are paid to help people sound like a certain area's inhabitants, the least they could be is more correct. We hear wrong accents all the time in shows and movies. Unless we've been to those places, we really don't know how wrong they might be. I watched a movie, based on the book Bitter Blood, that took place no more than an hour from me in North Carolina. If Maconaugy in 1944 is Spencer’s son, then Elsa lied in the beginning of the first episode of 1923 when she said only one of James & Margaret’s kids had children of their own. We already knew John had Jack so if Spencer has a kid she’s a liar.

It's Helen Mirren, playing Jacob's wife. James and Jacob were supposedly brothers. After the death of James, Margaret wrote to Jacob in Tennessee, asking him to come take care of the ranch until the boys were older. About a year or so later, with mail being almost non-existent back then, he and the wife (or she comes later, I don't know) arrive to find Margaret frozen to death and the boys starving. They raise the sons of James and Margaret and build Yellowstone to what you see in 1923. I can't tell you anything about 1923 after the few free shows on Paramount. I didn't pay extra for the plus channel. I'm waiting for both seasons to be on DVD. I bought 1883 on DVD and love it. All the special features they add to the DVD show are so worth buying it!

Well, I can only see the delayed showings of the series since I live in Thailand. Elsas' death was a shocker. I read all the rational for it, However, I think she was too powerful a character to die. The other information about James and his wife , i agree that was a weak way two such strong individuals to die. There is a you tube that explains the Family tree. My real burning question was how James was able to stake out control of so much land. From what I have read about obtaining land is you put out some stakes and then one goes to the Land office in the largest city and stake your claim. Where did he get so much money to buy the land ?. How come the Land authorities did not have a say on that much land being claimed ? It seems there must have been some other settlers in the same area? Also, why did he not claim the mineral rights since there were plenty underneath the land.? The only way he did not own that as well is when the railroad companies came through the owners with the help of some shady Senators were able to secure those rights. They were able to claim all the minerals underneath the land for 50 miles on either side of the railroad tracks for the length of the line. Everyone enjoy your viewing...sounds like a good nite of TV.
