It should be noted that with floating mines, if a ship passes by closely, it creates suction along the side of the vessel which could pull the mine in and hit the side of the ship. Also, if 2 mines are tethered together, the bow only has to catch the tether and it will drag the mine in to hit the side of the ship. That also increases the effective space covered by the mines as well. That is to say, any mines, even floating ones, are not to be taken lightly, just because the bow is more resilient, they could still easily sink a merchant vessel.

Thank you for sharing this summary of the evolving threat for global shipping. The relevant shipping lanes for commercial vessels are actually much narrower than what appears on the map, so the combination of frequent passages through pre-determined lanes means a target-rich environment for the Houthi. It remains to be seen what any coalition can do to frustrate Iran's continued materiel support of this terrorist group with advanced weaponry, other than expanding the scope of direct action against Houthi logistical points and launchers. There are already some sobering results from the current threat environment, as the RAN has all but admitted to its appalling lack of readiness since they cannot send a single vessel to assist with a multinational security force. This response is likely to result in a re-examination of the AUKUS arrangement and Australia's plan moving forward to adequately address current naval ops deficiencies.

It may be of interest how to most reliably sink ships. Consider the hull and desk of a ship to be a large box girder. If this girder is bent strongly enough it will buckle or fracture. A large explosive placed amidships directly under the keel will produce a big gas bubble that will tend to bodily lift the ship out of the water. Immediately after the gas bubble collapses it leaves a "hole" in the water that the ship fall into. This load reversal breaks the back of the ship often leading to sinking. Heavy weight torpedoes designed to create this effect are nominally 1000 Kg warheads. It is a valid question whether this effect would work on Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) but for ships up to at least 20k tons it is lethal.

Primarily we have got to this point because the USA believes (but this is by no means certain and it's an enormous gamble) that it is almost completely energy independent now and is actually a significant energy exporter. Since the end of WW2 the US has been the provider of maritime security to the world and until now everyone have been a beneficiary of globalisation (and also didn't want anyone else to be encouraged to build a big navy). Since the end of the Cold War it has benefitted American rivals such as the Chinese, Russians and Iranians more than the US. But the US needed oil, which has now changed. So the security of the US Navy is likely going to stop, or at least be much more targeted. Europe may step in to provide security in the Middle East, but I doubt it and I personally think that it is not in Europe's interest to do so (the exact reasons for this are complex). There is no one left in the world who could provide security there, so things are probably going to get a lot more interesting and chaotic in the Middle East to say the least. Interesting times I'm afraid. All the best.
