It sounds like he was doing a visa run. He was close to his Indonesian visa expiring, so had to leave the country in order to renew it (tourist and other short stay visas generally can't be renewed within that country, unlike most types of work or resident visas). Visa runs are why a number of places (such as the UK and EU Schengen Area) require a long period between visits. eg, someone going to the Schengen Area with "visa on arrival/visa free" can only spend 90 days in the Schengen Area within a 180 day period. He wasn't doing a day trip, it was an overnight - with no hotel booked. He didn't have valid travel documents for his next onward destination. Combined, that is enough reason for SG ICA to get suspicious and give a more detailed inspection. He didn't pass that inspection and was thus deported with the accompanying ban that is standard for a deportation. I have had a number of day trips in Singapore with long connections between flights. No issues from ICA. I've also had an unplanned overnight stay (so hadn't booked a hotel). The travel agent had mistakenly booked an overnight connection instead of the 4 hour connection I had planned. No one noticed until I checked in at Taipei. No issues from ICA. (Though I sat in the arrivals area of T1 once I had cleared immigration and collected my bags on my laptop booking somewhere to stay) One trip I had an 11pm arrival into Singapore and a 5am departure. Didn't attempt to leave the airport, slept in an airport lounge that I had access to that was open 24 hours. No one had any issues. One of my first trips, I had a few days for a stop over in Singapore. I cleared immigration and collected my bags, then was heading over to convert cash before leaving the baggage claim area when I noticed that my wallet was missing and assumed it had fallen out of my pocket on the plane. I went back to the ICA checkpoint and told them that I think I'd forgotten something on the plane, which was still there getting ready for the next flight. They let me back into the transit area (not having been through departure control) to go back to the gate and talk to the gate agents. They held onto my passport until I got back to the checkpoint (I found my wallet). This issue only happened because the idiot didn't think about his travel plans, had no reasonable explanation for any concerns that ICA may have raised and made an ass of himself.

He's doing a "visa run". A method used by people that wanna stay in a foreign country for long term, longer than what their visa allow them. By going out of the country for a short period and then returning, he had "renew" short term visa allowing him to stay there for another period.

@@kirie-8524 it literally not. Long time travelers know what it is and how to do “visa run”. It’s legal generally as long as you have an exiting flight when immigration ask. Even if it is less then 24 hrs. Generally tho people would visit the new country for 1-3 days just for experience. I have done things such as flying to a different country to come back home as it was a 1/4 or 1/3 of the cost of flights in the country I was visiting. Just make sure to communicate it to immigration if they ask.

For those wondering why gum is prohibited in Singapore is because in the past, people would just chew on gum and spit it everything or just like paste on chairs and such causing a lot of litter. It is also very hard to clean off for most cleaners hence usually there was some leftover residue of it, so to make Singapore a cleaner country, it was decided to be banned in Singapore. I was stopped by police before for it but I said I will dispose of it properly and he was cool with it and of course I did so

It was later cleared up because there was no way a small piece of gum could cause a jam of strong subway doors so

Afterthought: that also shows how thorough the cleaning has to be, that cleaners are expected to remove gobs of stuck-on gum from UNDER the train seats. Wonder how many countries expect the subway cleaners to do this?

There’s this mistaken concept that chewing gum is banned in Singapore. Gums are not sold in Singapore but that doesn’t mean it’s an offence to chew gum. Travellers can bring their gums into Singapore for their own consumption but they should know they need to wrap up their gums in their wrapper before they threw them down the dustbin. We don’t want dirty gums sticking everywhere, it’s unhygienic and unsightly. Just remember littering is an offence in Singapore. Nobody has ever got hanged for chewing gums.

During my internship, I escorted someone to ICA after he refused to board the flight. Tourists would sometimes lie to cross immigration for the jewel waterfall, but it is freaky to see someone lying in real life. As I was walking the pax to ICA, he claimed his SG girlfriend was in the hospital. I was really concerned and he seems to be freaking out. But when we got to ICA. His story switched and crumbled under simple questioning. I was shocked. There was no gf, no plans given after crossing immigration, and even the local phone number he gave was fake (WhatsApp and WeChat wasn't even installed in his phone). The ICA uncle took zero bs after the lie was exposed, and scolded the guy for lying when he changed his reasoning to being desperate as his gf is breaking up with him. He kept trying to get me to communicate his point even though the ICA officer is Chinese and understands him perfectly. Also, it makes me really uncomfortable as he spoke to me in fluent English before. Needless to say, he got detained and I got sent back to work.

What I know , ICA would not allow you to use your phone the moment they detain you. Lol . I have a friend who was detained and they immediately took everything from him, literally stripped him from every personal belongings, kept his passport . Last for at least 12 hours before release.

I had only been to Singapore for stop overs and really wanted to return for many years. I was finally able to return with my son around 5 years ago. I loved it, especially the safety, cleanliness and order. For sure the laws are strict and punishments severe compared to Western nations but the consequence of those laws means a safer nation. There is also less poverty within Singaporeans. The government (or no longer Government, but the Grandfather's economic development plans) enabled Singapore grow from undeveloped into highly developed in short time, combining civil engineering, strong understanding of protecting national economic interests whilst still allowing for some free market development and open investment opportunities from outsiders. It's ability to be a central port location also has economic benefits for Singapore. I would like to study more about it's development and really enjoyed spending time there. My son, who is mixed race, felt very comfortable there and especially enjoyed the multicultural aspect of the population. I also loved the way spirituality is so openly expressed, everywhere we turned there was either a street alter, a temple, a church or the big mosque. We are Australian and so live in a multicultural society but it was on a different level in Singapore.

The reason that spitting and chewing gum have penalties is to reduce the spread of pathogens. People outside Singapore, including me in the past, bring up those penalties as if the punishment is crazy. Now that I understand, it makes sense.I just want to spread the logic. Also, I saw a documentary on a prison in Singapore and it was fascinating. One detail is that there’s no furniture in the prisoner cells. So, if the tik tok guy had the use of a bed, he was more comfortable than the guys in the prison unit I saw. Peace

We were going to walk pass it and straight to immigration but a worker stopped us & directed us to the visa line. Nearly everyone (95% of the people) had to go to the visa line. Locals with an Indonesian passport went straight. The visa stamp on my passport is only valid for 30 days & my family we each had to pay.

as a Singaporean, I don't really care what foreigners have to say about Singapore lol. Things like Singapore being totalitarian, imposing death penalty on drugs, slapping heavy fines on petty crimes like smoking or chewing gum. I mean, those "negative impressions" have nothing to do with the citizens, it's not personal attacks nor prejudice, it's just some generic ignorance, and could be correctly easily by paying a visit here. I'm however more concerned, with how some foreigners come here thinking they're superior compared to us and how some of us kowtow to them. Eg. the British dude who punched a security guard, angmoh expats who get away with sexual harassment in the workplace, Australian schoolgirls who just get sent home after shoplifting without any punishment. This is why the law should enforce harsher punishments to deter such behaviour.

What's funny is almost any foreigner (well at least American) that talks about Singapore's laws, fines, punishments isn't doing so in a negative way. People like the tik toker that are deported and whatnot are exceptions to the rule. Most Americans talking about the laws/punishments are probably ignorant on the laws, but really when they are talking about it in the way Matt Walsh was at 00:49 they are doing so because they want their country (the US) to adopt the laws of Singapore (or whatever they imagine the laws of Singapore to be). Granted most of the time this is one half of the political spectrum in the US, but even then the other half doesn't usually bash Singapore. I think Singaporeans are really proud of their country and so it's easy for them to feel insulted even if their was no insult meant. Singapore is almost always referred to in a positive manner (at least in the US).

Just a guess: he overstayed his Bali Tourist Visa (usually you get 1 to 3 months on entry) and he made the trip to SG to get a new visa on re-entry to Bali - did that myself in different regions of the world myself, quite common. Is also quite common that the country you go to might have no like in ppl who come with a visa from country A that is already overstayed and then claim they only be here for 10 hours ... haha! If they let him in he gets a 3 months visa for SG and he has proof in his passport that he does not care. So they just keep him until his flight goes back and make sure he is on it. Actually no harm to anybody, leh! :)

Different cultures and countries have different ideas about good and evil. What is considered good for one culture, for another it can be considered pure evil, so I find all these disputes of people about the minuses and pluses of other countries to be meaningless. For me, the most important criteria for a successful state are a good economy and open borders, because if you don’t like something in your country or you think that the government is infringing on you, nothing prevents you from picking up and leaving. Believe me, I was born in Russia and I know that there is nothing worse than closed borders.

However, I do not chew gum, do not swear, and have an extremely negative attitude towards drugs, so such laws suit me quite well, but many people do not. People love to criticize, but only a few can really take responsibility and take risks, so in most cases criticism is absolutely meaningless.

Secondly, by your logic most things would be meaningless in a big enough society, people also shouldn't do scientific research unless they're going to be the next Einstein. The point is that most things that you enjoy now have been fought for by people who criticize and strive to improve their own community, no matter how little their individual efforts are. Thirdly, just because moving away from your country worked out for you doesn't mean that you can impose that logic onto everyone. Some people have emotional attachments to their land, or most people, especially in poorer countries simply cannot afford to move. Telling them to "just move" trivializes their suffering and pretends that it's their own fault rather than the failure of their government and more often than not the downstream effects of irresponsible actions from powerful countries.

I’ve been to Singapore 100 times as an American. Sometimes to stay a week, sometimes a few hours. I’ve done visa runs to Singapore and back in the past and I have gone there to do business. You misunderstood the Matt Walsh comment. He wasn't criticizing Singapore at all. He was saying that the US should adopt Singapore's laws. Either Singapore is magically is safe, something naturally occuring in the land or the people makes them safe, or they do certain things that make their country safe. Many right wing people in the US view Singapore as a good example of what happens when you prioritize "law and order" and think the US should emulate that.

Hahaha .. he must have been detained by ICA due to some immigration reasons. FYI those travellers who are not allowed to enter Singapore is being sent to the inadmissible passengers room and not airport jail to rest while waiting for the first available flight back to where they come from. The room will be guarded by auxiliary police and security cameras. They are allowed to use their phone upon request but will be monitored by an officer cause we don't want them to do any recording of any sorts. Their belongings will also be kept as we don't want them to use anything as a weapon that will danger themselves or the officers on duty. And for your info too the room is well kept with beds, tv, sofa ,dining area and food provided during their stay there. If passengers do comply with the regulations I don't think the officers will be hard on them.

Singapore immigration check and they found one roaster in my phone where I working as parttime and then they take my fingerprints and photos. So can I apply and can get entry in Singapore. My only complaint about Singapore is how expensive hotels are, other than that, it is one of the world's great cities with pretty much everything you could ask for. What this guy did was for sure illegal. Singaporean immigration is no joke and you should not be assuming you can pull some sort of visa extension stunt by loitering around the airport like that, really stupid, he is lucky he only got sent back to Bali.

Apparently, this American was here in Singapore for "visa run", i.e. just leave Indonesia so that he could return to get another longer visa. This means that he was denied entry as he was not a genuine travellers. This American is here for an ill intention. Good that he was deported back to where he boarded the plane. Deserve it.
