The reason yes is so good at transitions is because.,... They know what the hell they're doing. While most other bands are still on page 3 with their understanding of chords and theory, yes was on Page six. Even though Steve Howe was self-taught, the influences he learned from Chet Atkins to early rockabilly, classical, flamingo gave him a knowledge of the fretboard and a sophisticated knowledge of advanced chord movements that most other guitarists didn't have. Then you have wakeman, classically trained, next level sophistication. He was brilliant at knowing where when and how to use the new technologies like the Moog, mellotron, synthesizers. Anderson, though he only strummed a little guitar, was listening to composers like Stravinsky and was talented enough to hear the music in his head. Squire grew up being part of a choir, which gave him a more advanced understanding then the 12 bar blues. Bruford was more interested in jazz then being a rock and roll drummer , so complex time signatures he was familiar with. Finally throw in they all were very creative at their instruments. Nobody else sounded like squire, Steve howes approach was unique, wakeman was being wakeman, Bruford created his own style and nobody else sounded like Anderson. Finally they took the time to craft the music. While the rolling Stones recording an album in 3 days yes worked on some of these compositions for months, bickering and arguing until they got it polished. ..

I was lucky to find this band only three years after they started. The spacey stuff is actyually a second piece called Scheindeleria Praematorus (sorry about the spelling) which really means THE FISH which is really a Chris Squire composition. I have a HUGE collection of the band and related music the various members have produced and over 360 live concerts. They're kind of the soundtrack of my life.

Good to have you back doing it as only you can Chod! By the end of 1971, Yes were firing on all cylinders and they delivered the second half of their one-two punch with Fragile. A superlative sustained musical statement, it saw the band framing Anderson’s fanciful, sci-fi-laced themes with wildly inventive and hyper-aggressive arrangements. Egged on by the turbocharged rhythm section of Bruford and Squire, Howe and the group’s wily new keyboard whiz, Rick Wakeman (who replaced Kaye just prior to the album’s sessions), engaged in electric games of one-upmanship that revealed how they were actually two sides of the same creative mind. It didn’t hurt that Yes were sitting on a sublime collection of melodic gems - most notably “Roundabout” and “Long Distance Runaround” - that hit radio playlists with deadly aim. Within months of its release, Fragile became the breakthrough the band had long sought, going to Number Two in the U.S. - GuitarPlayer, 2021

imo, there is no Counting the beat with Yes. Its all gut feel/instinct. As a bassist, I am always impressed with Squires ability to nail the basslines with the most beautiful melodies.

Every time i hear this, the bass by Chris Squire impresses me. I was introduced in the seventies to Yes with the album Relayer, and after I got used to that, all other music they made seemed more simple.

The second part is all bass guitar and drums , all the guitars are the 'Bass' . I bought the albums 'Fragile and 'Close To The Edge' when they were released in the early seventies and am still ' blown away' by this incredible music. It is a pity Bill Bruford left the band when they finished 'Close To The Edge' . Thanks Chod !

They were masterful live. No, they didn't have to bring charts. They played these songs from memory, though there were always some adjustments in the arrangement and even some improvisation to the songs on stage. But they sounded every bit as good as the studio recordings.

Yes drummer Bill Bruford played on one more Yes album (Close to the Edge) before joining King Crimson. Crimson’s next three albums contain some of the very best of modern rock music. Check out Lark’s Tongue, Starless, and Red.

@@krisdoggett483 yes they are great and know their music, Chod as well . That's why I stick with them and was really mad cause I thought youtube kicked Chod off. The whole copyright thing. The fact is so many people are getting turned onto music they never would have listened to otherwise and it's also expanding rock fans musical taste. Most of this music is no longer on the radio and whatever is , it's the most commercial overplayed rock songs anyway.. here you get the varied menu and the artists get FREE promotion of their songs, new younger fans and older fans who go out and buy some of their old classic CDS on vinyl again.. I know I did! I think it's a bigger benefit than a detriment to the old time artists having guys like Chod praising their works!

I saw the 3 times in the early 70s, once with Tony Kaye (the yes Album tour) the other 2 with Wakeman. Two with Bruford on drums, One with Alan White. They always played these complicated songs without sheet music. And they didnt just 'get through them' they brought them to convincing and inspiring life.

I caught them at Washington stadium. 73, they were touring with Peter Frampton, who was very popular at the time. Truth is I listen more to Yes . Rediscovered , Perpetual Change filmed in concert. blew me away again.

3 of the shortest songs ever by YES begin Side Two of this album. These are the 2ND & 3RD songs. The 1ST and their shortest song ever was written by drummer Bill Bruford and unfortunately is overlooked and underappreciated. "5 Percent to Nothing" is their syncopated masterpiece and segues perfectly as a unique percussive intro into "Long Distance Runaround / Fish". They make the perfect Trilogy! IMHO. As a drummer you would have loved it! I hope you take the time to listen to it someday soon.

I'm glad you're getting back into it again, it's too bad you had to go through what a lot of other reactors didn't go through. I've seen them live, in concert quite a few times since the 1970s; they inspired me to get into music with guitar and piano. And yes they'll play 2 to 3 hours of music with very little crowd interaction. Their music is so complicated and sophisticated that there isn't much room to adlib and therefor their concerts sounded just like their album, they were all business on the stage: they created magic, but in concert you can see the effort it takes to pull it off. They had a great sound system, them and Supertramp had great sound systems.

The drummer is Bill Buford who draws from his love of jazz hence the signature. Saw it performed in Columbus , Ohio at Vet's memorial one week after the release of 'Fragile'

In the verse Bill Bruford is counting 5/4 with the beat on 1 The band is in 4/4 so we get a syncopation of the snare hit on 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 back to one again. Try it Count 1,2,3,4,5 then back to 1 the snare hit always resolves to 1. Then when the verse is ending there's an inversion where the snare is on 5 then 4, then 3, then 2 then back to 1 again. The beginning intro is in 5/8. The genius of Bruford's Polyrhythm's It's really hard to feel it if you don't count it out.

I literally have seen Yes play live over 50 times, they never had any charts.And the second half of this, "The Fish" is all Chris Squire on bass, no guitars, all bass. You said it. Genius.

Rick Wakeman and Chris Squire both had professional music theory training but Yes mainly relied on rehearsing and recording their rehearsals to learn their song arrangements. They worked hard on being able to play their intricate songs solidly cause they wrote it all back in the day with the live show in mind.

For the most part Yes played lived exactly like they recorded. As you say their time count is ridiculous, so there was limited opportunity to stray very far from their recordings. They were all business on stage. I got to see them every few years from the 1970s.

I can't wait until you explore the Yes "Drama" album. Although there were major personnel changes, it has that Yes brilliance and it was HEAVY ! With tracks like "Tempus Fugit", "Into The Lens", "Machine Messiah" and "Run Through The Light". These songs shouldn't be overlooked. It was like 1980 and there was a freshness about it.

Fragile is one of the best albums ever made. I would listen to this at my buddy’s house back in the mid 80’s. He and his dad were guitar players and loved Steve. Now……as I have gotten older (55) I understand music a lot better. Especially since music changed in the early 90’s and I thought it sucked! YES is one of if not the most talented bands of all time!

I only know a few from them, thanks for sharing! Some quick recs: The Mars Volta are a more recent prog rock fave of mine, check out Wax Simulacra (best version is performed on Letterman). King Crimson - '21st century schizoid man' and Edgar Winter- Frankenstein are also mind melters. Looking forward to seeing more music reactions!

Snare is on a 4 count. Fist measure he hits on 1, 2nd measure 2, 3rd 3, 4th 4, then back to 1. Just count the 4 count on your four main fingers. That’s the way I learned it on kit.

No, they don't perform reading the music charts to the songs. The only musician I have ever seen reading the music charts in a live performance was Al Dimeola in Carnige Hall on his first performance with Return To Forever.

Snare and gtr is in 5/4 verse riff is 6/8 and vocals and piano 4/4 … big shift in bridge ..not gonna map it here main riff 4/4 with 6/8 lead in to verse.. the fish is all bass tracks no GTR and percussion in 7/8

I know you heard a third of the Zappa "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" suite, but that didn't give you much of a taste. Try His "Inca Roads" from the album One Size Fits All for something more complicated. Frank Zappa also wrote 20th Century orchestral music (eg. "The Perfect Stranger"), played by symphonies, and funded by the sales of his rock music. Then there is the whole genre of jazz fusion, much of which sprang from groups headed by former Miles Davis band members. A good example is the Billy Cobham drum solo on the song "One Word" from the Mahavishnu Orchestra album Birds Of Fire. It's like he combined a Buddy Rich-like touch on the snare with the power of a John Bonham.
