One time, in college, we were doing a thing for a class and they specifically told us not to speak in English and just use our mother tongue because we were being recorded and the video was going to be shown to beginners. All of our classes were in English tho, because we were learning the language to become ESL teachers and we were in advanced classes already, so we were used to communicate mostly in English. When it was my turn to speak, I said everything I had to say in English without realizing what I was doing and when I finished, everyone was looking at me like I was from Mars. Interesting - I was wondering since I don't speak Korean at all what actual Koreans thought about it - I've learned Chinese for years and I can tell that a lot of hollywood movies where the actors "speak Chinese" it's really horrible and sometimes (like in the show 'Firefly') you can barely if at all understand a single thing they are trying to say it's that bad - I wonder though, is it the same with Korean where Korean speakers will compliment a foreigner's Korean skills even if you are being totally honest they're not very good compared to a native speaker? Because with Chinese it is like that - take Mark Zuckerberg. There's a video of him "speaking fluent Chinese" on youtube and his Chinese is really, really bad - but native speakers always compliment it just because at least he's trying to learn it and speak it - I feel like Chinese speakers are way too nice about it and need to be more honest with it. My wife is at least more honest (she is Chinese) but even she is nicer about it than I would be if someone were claiming to speak my language (Estonian) "fluently" when it was very poor in reality!

Stuff like this is the real reason to learn other languages. In Hollywood there are dialog coaches that help actors speak foreign lines. Usually it's only 1 or 2 sentences but Carrey speaks a lot of lines here. They're all memorized. I think it's just jarring to hear such advanced syntax in a beginner's accent. Generally, if you get far enough to converse like that, you also learn along the way how to shape your mouth to form the words more naturally. It really doesn't feel like a failure on his part, but on the part of the language coach and the creative team. There didn't have to be a disconnect there, but there was, and that's why we're all here talking about it. I’m a native Korean speaker and from what I saw in interviews, he actually went and got a tutor to learn Korean for these scenes. It wasn’t just him reading phonetic sounds off a script, those few lines in Korean are actually digested by Carrey. You can see that he understands the construct of the language by listening to where he breaks the words and sentences. Instead of saying, “Ia m ad og”, he knows to break it up into, “I am a dog.”

The movie situation is in Korea. Most likely people around him speak Korean. Storyline, plot and setting. I probably will talk excitedly with Koreaboos or whatsoever is their name. The best way to learn a language is by using it. Well at least you will be able to know if someone is swearing at you in different language. Plus, I don't understand why people love to put labels on everything. I don't think I've seen any Hollywood actor speak a longer line in Korean with the camera in their face. Jim did an excellent job with in this scene. Jim is a perfectionist and did the whole scene on one continuous take. He did have the option of cutting in half, but he refused. The dialog was also changed numerous times but he rocked it. Yes, his pronunciation wasn't perfect. Although I can read, write and even speak Greek, Hebrew and German and am fluent in Korean and English, my pronunciation is not perfect when I speak German. I'm so proud of Jim for taking on this challenge.

It was then I mostly bumped in to backpackers through friends and at bars. None of them had any interest speaking German. I once asked an Austrian girl, who a friend was dating at the time (who surprisingly loved speaking German with me), why people seemed to allergic to speaking German. She said backpackers, especially from Europe, are trying to spend a few years escaping their culture before they return to it for good. Hearing their mother tounge spoken to them kills the illusion of escapism and reminds them that their real lives are still waiting for them back in Germany, or wherever they come from. Can't totally agree since I've met many foreigners ( Asians / Central Americans / Europeans ) whose English was poor. But, to your point, when foreigners do speak properly or at least as well as native born Americans / British / Aussies, etc., then THAT can be pretty embarrassing! LoL.
