I'm here in 2024 researching the song to give to a student and we both were amazed to find this gem coming from a younger Anne Hathaway who has graced our screens nonstop for the past 16 years and we never heard this until now! She's certainly the whole package.

She looks so delicious here and sounds so divine! This is one of my favorite Broadway musical songs EVER. Anna Maria Alberghetti set the high water mark for the role but I'd say Anne Hathaway matches her. Which is high praise indeed. After seeing and hearing so many Lilis who don't understand the role at all, much less the song, is thrilling to see a great actress and artist who illuminates her portrayal from the inside. Bless you, Anne Hathaway, future Oscar recipient for sure.

Tipsy I agree. I very much enjoy Anna Maria Alberghetti but there is a lovely warmth in Anne’s voice that I feel informs that character better than a purer operatic sound.

I like Anne Hathaway in this video and sings the song well, but Anna Martia Alberghetti hit all those high notes with absolute precision and her support was impeccable. Hathaway has to fudge some of those notes.

Apparently she was classically trained by Linda Benanti (mother of Broadway actress Laura Benanti). And Anne was the first choice to play Christine Daaé in Phantom of the Opera movie but had scheduling conflicts due to Princess Diaries 2.

When I read different entertainment message boards , I find it funny that many people are always trashing on Anne Hathaway ( " she can't act or she is not a good singer " ) or other young talented women- like Beyonce or Gwyneth Paltrow . But , this proves they are all blinded by hate and jealously . Hathaway is absolutely brilliant here- incredible acting , singing, and she is performing live ( not easy to do ) . Trust me, Meryl Streep nor Amy Adams can sing and perform like this.

Ann Hathaway is a treinar soprano not a belter as she also showed in Les Miserables .Meryl Streep is also a trained singer. Both wanted to sing opera but they saw that they would be better as actresses and musical singers.Ann should have made The Phantom of the opera and the Princess in Into the Wood .She is a talented soprano .They wanted to make a Carousel new movie after Les Miserables with Hugh ad Billy and Ann as Julie but it was cancelled. Now they are a bit old for rhe roles

@witherwings14 Ok that's reasonable. I just believed that they should have picked someone who DID have much vocal training and was ready for such a big role. There are plenty out there. Like my friend, who just happens to be preparing to audition for Christine in our high school's upcoming production. (The rights were licensed this year for schools). And yes, our school can put on a show like this, we stage a full opera every year, this won't be too hard with out experience

well she tried but the voice is shrill on the high notes mostly because she can't control her vibrato amd she has no support so no power BUT its a different take on it with a more natural voice, but was written for Anna Marie, alway a problem when a score is writtenfor a specific voice in mind

@witherwings14 Really? You obviously aren't a trained singer because anyone who sings at all would realize how bad Emmy was for the part. She couldn't sing the high note at the end of POTO, she did D# not E, her voice is thin, badly supported, and not pleasant. Don't give me crap about her being 16, I know a 15 year old that's 1000 times better and can easily do an F above that E. I've had a few conversations about how bad Emmy is actually, with singers.

She does a nice job as a non-trained singer, but she lacks proper support ("...see that cloud, I just might...", etc. as well as the last sustained note). She has trouble hitting the high notes ("Yes, my heart") and scoops on others in a pop style ("this is our chance". Again, maybe that's what people like these days. I wonder how she sings the other song in the show "I Hate Him" which requires even more sustained singing. MY opinion. You don't have to agree.
