One thing that FrameWhisperer said in a video that really stuck with me was, "If you're working on improving your punishment, and in a match you duck/block and properly punish an attack, as far as you're concerned, you won that match." Really helped improve my patience, not just in Tekken, but in other fighting games, too.

it’s those small goal achievements mid match that really keep me going. setting a goal for yourself each match is too helpful not to be a part of the game itself with like daily challenges in fps games

I heard this alot as a technique to improve, my problem is for whatever reason, when the game gets going, I get caught up more on winning than my personal goals. Idk how to shake that off lol, I maybe need to lower the objectives and write them down, my brain just defaults to "oh nah he did what? youre getting these hands now"

This is sincerely such a fantastic way of putting it, I never really thought of it like that. Hopefully this can improve my own patience too! @@tranceaddict11 I really feel this lol, I find it fairly difficult to avoid just focusing on winning and taking it poorly when I don't. I try to remember that I'm missing several building blocks to reach the point that I reliably win, and that winning itself is more a result and not the goal. Here's hoping we can both keep at it and push through!

Maining Leo, it's my first Tekken game and first fighting game, made it to Combatant rank. It's brutal dealing with mashers, and it's definitely a struggle to learn execution, matchups, throw breaks AND learning to deal with mashers. My loss rate is honestly 70% or higher... but I'm not giving up :) Learning is a mega challenge, but seeing yourself improve over time is an adrenaline rush like nothing else. And when you don't find a masher, matches are incredible XD It's those moments that make T8 unbelievably addictive, it's a rush worth chasing. But yeah, make no mistake - it's damn hard.

Here's a tip from one Leo player to another: You dont necessarily need to learn Korean back dash to move around. I'm a Shiryu that uses the poor man's back dash. Back, back, down, back, back, down etc. Its perfectly fine to move around like this. You can learn kbd anytime and apply it whenever. As for moves to use. Down forward 4 is really good for poking. Dont be afriad to throw out Knk 3,4 for the mix up. Lots of new Leo's like to go low so defy that trend. Down back 4,1is great but don't overuse it. You can be launched punished on block. Try going for a safe mid after a sweep, like down forward 1, and go from there. OR you can use down forward 2 for a combo if you see that they don't punish your df2. Down 2 is also great, even on block, as you have lots of plus frames. Try df2 after d2 and if it hits then that means they were blocking low or they were trying to mash out a move that's not fast enough, which most characters don't have after blocking a d2 from Leo. Forward forward 2 is also a great offensive and whiff punish tool, though higher skilled players will punish it. I got one more. Another great thing about Leo is 2,2. It comes out at 11 frames, which is typically the second fastest move of mostly all characters. This move does great damage for what it is, and it's strength is that you can use it a little mindlessly. Don't know if something is punishable? 2,2 for great damage. It's easy to remember and spamabble if your opponent is just throwing out moves. Forward 2,2 is also a great whiff punisher. Don't let them block it though 👀

Tekken 8 is still a defensive game. If you know how to answer to their offense, thats where the climbing starts. Mashers will plateau easily at a certain point but once you slow it down and block more, duck highs, sidestep, and adapt, thats where Tekken strives. You could literally have a subpar combo but as long as you have a staple combo, a certain wall carry combo, wall combo, and defense, you can easily get to Mighty Ruler. After that is just polishing your skill and more labbing to exceed further beyond. Combos are important too for maximizing damage but poking can mitigate that so easily that you wont have to rely on those big launches that are both unreliable and unsafe in order to win rounds. If you truly want to win more games and climb, play defense. Dont focus too much on offense or else you'll get blown up whenever you are minus frames.

It's pretty evenly distributed from Garyu to Mighty Ruler as I've seen for the time being, which is kinda the middle spot where I'm in right now. One tip: throw more. Not to win specifically, just to frustrate your opponent on opening them a bit. If it so happens that they got a good defence, it wil break them a little and you'll get some relief from their pressure. It just works because no one is perfectly trained to punish everything. Good luck and careful with the ducks 😎
@mdbr2

I felt that. I have been playing the game for more than 25 years (only took it seriously 5 years ago), and reached Mighty Ruler in T8. I just came out of a Zafina match where I was completely destroyed by this guy who only started in T7, mainly because I didn't know what to do against her stances. Even if you are not mashing your way to victory, some people think they are better at the game just because they played it longer. Never fall into the trap of overestimating yourself. There's always something new to learn in Tekken. It is what makes this game both frustrating and rewarding.

as a guy that started playing in Tekken 7 and started his pro journey at the same game the most underrated thing when learning tekken is labbing every single character in this game. During the pandemic all I did was just play every single character and understand their gameplan and best moves it's one of the best feelings when you've reached peak tekken where it's all about mind games and no longer about knowledge check.

It’s easier to pick up a shooting game than a fighting game. Because you really WANT to learn and get good at it by going into training. I told my cousins if y’all don’t like training mode then just don’t get the game unless you’re playing playing for story mode💀 it’s not the combos that are hard it’s the mental stack that you must have after you know your combos by muscle memory.
@luminuslux
@luminuslux 8 ай бұрын
@@qxpn9220 in my opinion this depends a lot on the type of person you are. besides learning the basic moveset of characters, i didnt use training mode much when i started out ages ago. literally just learned everything by fighting alot of ppl and getting better this way, without any knowledge of frames etc. Combos in all 3D fighters are by far one of the easiest things to learn compared to diverse 2D fighters and anybody who thinks only combos will make them good, will hit a big roadblock at some point. Becoming a fundamentally strong player usually is way superior to a player that just tries some random launchers with a big combo - its also way more demanding to. I also think becoming fundamentally good is way faster and easier to achieve by playing online, instead of just going to practice mode/watch replays.

Big point of focus i think MANY people should REEEEEAALLY take into account. @3:55 TMM talks about short term glory and the cognative dissonance associated with the realization youre not as good as YOU hyed yourself up to be. It DOESNT have to be that way or at the very least it doesn't have to be that bad. You can be the person that works at your own pace, stays humble and genuinely grinds. You can be happy with the small things, instead of obsessing over the Wins and Losses. You dont HAVE to become that person who searches for the easy outs and never applies themselves only to end up frustrated and miserable when things get rough! Thats a LIFE LESSON btw. You basically defined why I like the game so much. The game with how much content it has, it will always feel fresh. Every person plays the characters differently too. As a new player I’m in love with it. I like hard games too (fell in love with the Souls series as well), and Tekken might be right now my favorite FG. To someone who loves to learn new things, Tekken is amazing.

All of you are talking about how proud you are of your progress and where you've come from to where you are now and I'm trying to figure out where my enthusiasm has gone. I didn't take any shortcuts and now my execution and skill are so much above where I came from but I also feel tired and detached. I thought I wanted great opponents (win or lose, as long as I had a close fight that made me think and nothing felt certain for either side is the greatest feeling I've had playing Tekken) but even that seems to feel fleeting now. I feel like that masher just chasing their next easy target but for me I don't even know what I'm looking for anymore. The height of my investment in the series seems to have been Tekken Tag 2 but my finest hour came in 7 and I feel like the dissonance between when I had fun and when I got good has affected the enjoyment I get.

what he means is if you want to win more than lose, pick Mishima. if you want to get destroyed in later ranks, pick Law, because most of his attacks are mids and highs and have ridiculous punish when blocked frames for characters fighting him. only a couple of good lows but most of the combos are easy to block and at this point, they basically ruined the character. of course there are worse characters than him but I can’t seem to beat someone with him once they figure out how to block lows. his special moves are easily interrupted. but hey that’s just what I see. I still win some but it’s so hard when I keep fighting Jun, Reina, Victor, Bryan, pretty much any character that is really good

Thank you. That was very motivating, actually. This is the exact philosophy I stuck to for the last year since I started playing T7 and, not gonna lie, I was about to give up multiple times. In my mind I understood everything you said in this video, but it's oh SO HARD to stick to it when you continue to lose to laggy Law spammers for months and months on end, not being able to even get into green ranks. It took every bit of resolve I had to go on. But eventually I started having fun, even when I lost. And appreciating the things my opponent did right, and immediately recognizing the things I did wrong. And then I finally started winning. It's an amazing feeling when you finally begin to recognize the situations and react to them accordingly. That moment is exactly when you see the full extent of the road ahead. And it's intimidating. But oh so exciting. And please, don't shut up hella scrupman XD The commentary you've been doing lately during your matches is very informative, sometimes even enlightening. And of course, entertaining. So more of that, please.

I had one of those knowledge check moments the other day. I had been labbing a mixup. Got into a match against a Shinryu, 3 ranks above me. Won the first set, lost the rematch, second rematch was 2-2 and I was feeling the pressure. Then a voice in the back of my head said, "Do the mixup now!" Did the mixup, got the launch and won the match. I rarely pop-off in games but it felt really good to see my labbing pay off.

"Do you think the mashers are having fun?"- short answer, yes. Mashers, and frame trappers don't play to get good. They come home from work, pick the game up, and go online for a quick fix of dopamine. They're not going to bother rematching anyone who knows the match up. They know they bought a game and a game's fundamental purpose is provide entertainment. What you're saying is obvious. If you spend time learning something then you will inevitably become better at it. But not everyone picked this game up to become the next Knee, or the next Arslan. Some just wanted to dress up as Big Boss on Victor and do easy to perform flashy moves. If that's what's fun for them who are we to tell them that they're wrong? As diaphone said, this game is easy if you just want to have fun, and hard if you actually want to get good.

I actually feel like a lot of bnb combos and mixups aren’t too hard to execute either as I’ve been practicing. I think it is really the 3D aspect, movement, and matchups that will make playing this game difficult for me. Also I’m usually a player that likes to space people out and punish, but I feel like the punish windows in this game are so much shorter than the others I’ve played.

If you trained in real life at fighting there are risks and you could hurt each other idk I like when is civilized competition.

The problem with Tekken is that it is complex and requires thinking to some extend, muscle memory and good reflexem. Other games can be hard and rely more on IQ/smartness but nothing on execution. Here we got execution, reflex and some smartness. BTW I play Tekken since T3 and still know some moves from Tekken 3 or 5 and sometimes I think that knowledge is making me problem with learning new combos for which I just don't have enough time. Challenging part about playing reactive in T8 is that the game mechanics actively work against you. Chip damage and heat smash/heat engagers etc. punish you for playing reactive Then there are people who have refined flowcharts where they intentionally leave gaps in their offense to land counterhits/launchers. This seems especially common with evasive characters like Yoshi/Xiaoyu/etc. Nonsense strings -> duck launcher or nonsense strings -> counterhit launcher or bizarre setups/frame traps that look like you should be able to do something but you really cant

Great advice. I decided to play yoshimitsu along with dragunov and he’s so fun, I was warrior in T7 a couple years ago and quit after only playing for 200 hours I think, my general fighting game fundamentals and understanding has risen since then as I decided to actually get decent with sf6(I’m high diamond beating masters etc) in 8 I’ve gotten to vanquisher super quick which felt amazing and have beaten a bunch of red ranks so almost fell into the trap of going for ranks and wins but decided to pick up yoshimitsu (always wanted to play him but was intimidated and lazy)take it easy and just try stuff in every match and play more casuals. Diving deeper into technical characters like yoshi has made me go straight to practice every time i turn on the game to just see what works, I could probably be red rank with dragunov now I think but its genuinely more fun to just lab and play casuals atm, practice is like a mini game in itself 😂

It’s easy to mash in this game not because of the number of characters but because it became imperative to design characters to have exclusively 1 button strings since Tekken 7, then with the addition of input reading stylish mode and always being directly in front of someone, it just works. What’s also annoying is that I’m pretty sure that Victor 2 string is a natural combo

This is my first Tekken game, I'm 60 hours in and I probably have 120 hours across all fighting games ever at this point. I decided I was playing Jun since they announced her because I liked the character archetype, and it happens she's really good in the game so that's nice. Though what makes her truly strong I highly doubt I'm utilising at my level so I honestly do not think it matters much yet, I have confidence I'd be at the same point with the majority of the roster. I made Garyu yesterday, I haven't learnt optimal combos yet I just have a couple that I can confidently pull off from a few different launchers that I practiced day one and other than that I've tried to play mostly defensively and try to learn my punishers since I've consumed far more guides and high level streams of them talking about how to approach fighting games than I have ever actually played myself. It's put me in this strange spot where I feel like my knowledge exceeds my ability at the moment. My biggest weakness is stopping the mash characters that always seem plus and getting used to when to crouch and how to use my ws moves properly in that situation. I'm still slow on the draw so even if I do crouch appropriately the opponent throws out a mid before I capitalise quite often. It's probably going to take a little while now to move out of red ranks I assume but I'm trying to stay goal oriented. I've also found it very useful for me personally to learn to take a break when I'm really frustrated to the point I'm not having fun. I then return to the game later or the next day and watch my replays and try to learn something before playing again. Last session before reaching red rank I lost to a Reina spamming fast jabs into me for most of the match. I then made a conscious effort to start using Juns parry way more in those situations and the next Reinas I fought on the way to red I parried multiple times and conditioned them to stop jab spamming me. That felt really good.
