This is why I don't get why the steven universe fandom hates on Pink Diamond the most out of all of the diamonds lol. And let's be real here for a second, if spinel became an annoyance to the other diamonds they'd shatter or harvest her gem without a second thought. Is pink diamond shitty? I found an interesting explanation for it. Essentially, we were seeing PD's development in reverse. So instead of seeing her do bad things and eventually become a better person, we instead have seen her do good things but later on find out that she did some bad things as well. This doesn't mean everyone actually thinks she is a bad person, but its just that seeing her development in reverse had a massive impact on how we see her.

Problem is that if the diamonds, and the gem empire, were attacked in such a manner it would vindicate there former aggression. Not that “gee wiz I guess preemptively sterilizing planets was the smart way to do things after all” is the correct way of thinking, but it is the likely one. I think forgiving the diamonds is about burying the hatchet so that life can start to get better, because the alternative is never ending wars of annihilation which tend to make nations like the gem empire by there very nature.

The Diamonds should never have been redeemed. It sends a terrible message to children, that there are no limits on forgiveness, when there absolutely should be. I'm okay with terrible characters being redeemed. A good example is Vegeta for DBZ, a character who's murdered hundreds in cold blood. However it was his heritage, and the monster that controlled his race that made him so prideful to begin with. A character like him fits perfectly with the positive change arc. But the diamonds are more like Frieza. They're the cause to all the terrible things that happen in the show, both directly and indirectly. The only reason they do such terrible things is due to their own malicious intentions. The start of the movie is further proof of this. While they may have talked about Steven showing them love and all that jazz, they're doing it in from of an audience. But when the feed is cut they're much more open with Steven and show they're true colors. They're just whiny children who don't care about other life forms. White literally fucking roles her eyes at the idea that other life forms are equal.

The fact that Ozai lost his bending before being thrown to jail was a culminating moment of poetic justice. There is a huge difference between not taking the life of a monster incapable of remorse and giving them the absolution without condition. Plus, the redemption of the diamonds, beyond the controversial ethical implications, was rushed and so out of character. The trope of the pure-hearted hero redeeming the villains just by being themself is quite a lazy one.

Fantastic points here. What REALLY irks me, though, is the way Pink Diamond has been treated in the more recent episodes and by the fans. While she may have made some horrible decisions in her past (harming Volleyball, keeping a human zoo, abandoning Spinel, generally acting like a selfish child), she was the only Diamond to realize on her own that Homeworld's actions were wrong. Even with her lifetime of indoctrination and spoiled treatment, she still grew a semblance of a conscience and tried to make a positive change. She wasn't perfect, but she *tried.* But now that we know "Rose Quartz" was less than an absolute angel, the fandom has done nothing but tear the character to shreds, all while ignoring the other Diamonds' far worse actions. Why? Because her connection to Steven is more personal? Because he he is still grappling with his mother's mixed legacy? Because we've seen him speak to Blue, Yellow, and White, and Pink isn't alive anymore to defend herself? Because we're halfway through his character arc and can only see the pain? Is it truly easier to forgive three ancient, tyrannical mass-murderers than their misguided but well-intentioned little sister?

Yellow Diamond destroyed the Zircons'' physical forms (poofed them) but she left their gems intact. We can see them cameo in the movie during the message to the universe. They are still alive. She also poofed the crystal gems during the Era 3 ball and they reformed after being released from the bubble. Again the Rose Quartzes were poofed not shattered and were able to reform in future. In the Answer when Garnet tells Steven how Ruby and Sapphire met Blue Diamond gives the order for Ruby to be shattered however that was for the crime of fusing with an elite. Cross-gem fusion was unheard of prior to this and was seen as such a deviation from protocol that Garnet was deemed an abomination. Rather how we would view a human-ape hybrid.

If they have been conquering and destroying planets, as well as Holocausting their own people for reasons such as labeled defectives, crystal, or fusions, and they have been doing this for thousands of years (including both before and after Pink's supposed shattering) without showing any signs of rethinking about the well being of their own people, then they are way beyond redemption and changing their ways! Also it just kills off any stakes this story had, what kept me watching the show for a little bit longer despite the disappointing cluster arc, was the hope of getting a major battle between Steven and the gang, against the tyrannical beings that have brought suffering to innocent gems do to their fascist beliefs and grind their face into the dirt! But nope, Rebecca and the crew felt like making a plot twist that Rose was Pink Diamond the whole time, which kills any sort of potential character growth for Steven, and the Diamonds are now looked on as sympathetic and misunderstood woman that let their impulses get the better of them. Bottom line here is that not every single villain needs to be deep or complexed and every single sympathetic antagonist needs to be redeemed!

I understand why so many people have come to hate Pink Diamond for her actions towards other characters-she’s a very morally controversial character who’s done terrible things-but the fact there are people who, by the end of the show, hate Pink while coming to praise or love the other Diamonds baffles me. In the bigger picture of things, Pink is the lesser evil of the Diamond Authority. She had some well-intentioned or more moral aspects to her character in addition to the immoral facets-she tried to save the organic life on Earth, free Gems from the conformist tyranny of-and possible execution at the hands of-the Diamonds. The other Diamonds killed far more Gems and organic life over a far longer period of time (considering how many planets they’d colonised), created fusion experiments and the Cluster (which they intended to use to wipe out the entire planet earth and all life on its surface), intended to obliterate very Gem on Earth’s surface who (couldn’t evacuate at the end of the Gem War) with the corruption attack, and ran a dictatorial governmental system on Homeworld that destroyed any Gems who didn’t fit into the system or weren’t socially desired-and the Diamonds never saw fit to change their death-ridden system for thousands of years, because they benefitted from it; they only changed because Steven came along. All of the Diamonds did horrible things, but Pink was, very obviously, the one with the least crimes to her name.

@Melody Ackerman My main theory, (which I remember getting inspiration for from a video on how ATLA wrote the impacts of war...I think it might’ve been by Hello Future Me), is that people have a bigger problem with Pink not just because we got to see her good qualities (even if exaggerated/glorified) first and then gradually her dirty laundry was revealed, but because Pink’s actions showed more visible personal impacts on specific characters we had personal investment in. It’s easier to feel empathy for the pain of individuals than for large collectives-we can feel the impact of an atrocity or problem more when we see how it personally hurts individual characters, rather than seeing the large-scale casualties as statistics. Outside of Pink Diamond, Garnet, the Off-Colours and a few others, we don’t see many people bearing the full emotional brunt of the other Diamonds’ abuse or cruelty of their policies-things like colonising, the Cluster, and the systemic oppression of Gems who didn’t fit into roles was mostly seen on a larger scale of planets and unseen populations of organics or Gems. Pink, on the other hand, had her problems deeply personally affect Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl, Bismuth, Spinel, Steven, Greg, Pink Pearl/Volleyball (and, because it still had to be said, the other Diamonds as well). We spend more of the series empathising with the characters Pink personally hurt, and we see the impact she left with her issues more closely than the other Diamonds’ crimes, even though the latter are larger and more severe (and they were less willing to give up those ways than Pink) in the bigger picture of things.

Steven treats the Diamonds like a racist grandma you visit once a year out of familial obligation, and yet people are still mad, using the circular logic that they appreciate that Steven is a pacifist and all-loving hero, but they still want to see him physically hurt the Diamonds, shatter them even. I agree that the diamonds are obviously genocidal murderers and shouldn’t be forgiven, but I just don’t agree that the text of the story tells us to do so. The diamonds must have been stopped somehow, so what options are there? Option A: Shatter the diamonds. This seems to be what everyone expected but I’m honestly surprised anyone thinks this is a good idea. The show clearly outlined what happens when diamonds are shattered with Pink’s story, the remaining diamonds seek revenge, war starts, many many deaths occur and the strict regime ultimately remains unchanged. I doubt they would be able to take down one diamond, let alone all 3 in order to ensure none remain in power, and even if by some miracle they did it would likely end up in gem kind falling into chaos as there’s no way the people who murdered their leaders could hold power. This is just a bad idea, there are no good outcomes in seeking justice against the diamonds. Option B: Keep the diamonds in power and change the way they govern - the path the show took. They obviously have a weak spot for pink, and for Steven to use that to manipulate them into better leadership is the best outcome. There’s less risk of loyal gems revolting as their leaders are still keeping order, no major conflicts outside perhaps small gem uprisings, and Steven has huge influence over how homeworld is governed instead of being seen as a murderer. I honestly think it would be extremely illogical for the show to take any route other than this given the circumstances. Now I understand that kids might be confused by this message, and it is a grey one to be sure, but to say the show is telling kids to forgive everyone no matter how bad is just a huge misread to me. It’s saying to put aside pride and justice when lives are on the line, to compromise and choose the option with the least likely harm, to play your cards carefully. There is no way they could’ve enacted rightful justice on the diamonds without causing more harm. If I was hitlers long lost kid or something and I had the power to convince him to end the war, I’d fuckin do it. I don’t care how sick it makes me feel, reforming nazi Germany takes priority over my personal sense of justice. I get that people may disagree with me on this but at least I feel like we can see this as a valid position to take. I’d like to see Steven try to slowly and carefully push the diamonds out of power, but this is a very long long game. Gems have lived their whole life with this strict hierarchy and any rash sudden actions will cause more war and conflict. One of the things I love about SU is how it teaches how grey and subjective morality is to kids. Other kids shows say “never lie”, SU says in episodes like the Test that there are situations where this might not apply. Other kids shows say “bad guys should always get what’s coming to them”, but SU says geopolitics is way more complicated than that.

@Diregentleman My understanding and thoughts were the diamonds were only pretending to be nice and kind so Steven would stay. They weren’t actually remorseful. The argument “the diamonds aren’t redeemed,” is one I took literally. Their views weren’t changed. However, they were so desperate to have Pink back, they would do anything to get her to stay, hence the neediness of the opening song. I assumed they would become villains again after being rejected enough times because rather than changing their views and perceptions, they changed their actions to convince Steven to stay. Like how adults play along to a child’s imagination, thinking the child will eventually realize they are wrong but still wanna stay on their good side, so the parents pretend to support the child. But once realizing Steven would still reject them and refused to stay on Homeworld, they would become worse and more heartless than before. That was my hope for the direction of the series, and was disappointed when that wasn’t the case. I dropped the show after the movie, the “Rose is Pink Diamond” reveal was poorly written, but I hoped that would be able to take it in an interesting direction, but the diamond’s redemption was the last straw for me, and I couldn’t continue it

God, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's gotten sick of AwestruckVox. This is a show that has forced Garnet to fuse to escape death after Pearl coerced her into fusion and then acted like it was a good thing. This is a show that defended Lapis, an abuser; against Jasper, the person she abused. This is a show that is faster to redeem the Diamonds, the genocidal tyrants, than it is to redeem Rose Quartz, a revolutionary class traitor, because she was childish and hurt some people. This is a show that sent Spinel, a literal sentient toy, back to be played with by the Diamonds, and treated it as a good thing. And yet, despite all this, this is a show that AwestruckVox has defended to the ends of the earth as being flawless as a diamond. Truthfully, this show is special to me, but to claim it is perfect is to be racist, transphobic, and all sorts of other nasty things to an absurd degree. I think Bismuth was right. The Diamonds need to be shattered.

Yellow Diamond in the opening of the Steven Universe movie clearly states, "I've disbanded my armies." Last time I checked, one does not go to war with nature. Humans have f---ed over nature countless times, yet we never call those plowing times "war". We *hunt* creatures to extinction, we destroy the environment, we raze forests to make room for crops. That is not what any army is designed to do. Armies are designed to kill enemy nations, which means that, if the Diamonds have standing armies, then there has to be another nation out there. 2. Also in the movie's intro (Seriously, the amount of details the intro gives is really d----ing.) Steven is praised for bringing about an era of peace. As I stated before, this doesn't work well with the idea the Gems are simply killing animals. True, there could have been rebel gems, but the only ones we see were with Lars. I would hardly call that a war. It was more of a gang than an army. Therefore, since animals can't really put up a fight, nor are we shown further rebellion within the Gems themselves, we must consider the war being associated with forces outside the Empire and Earth. Additionally, this "era of peace" had to be achieved over a time period of *two years.* Gem communication is not that primitive, so why did it take so long to achieve an era of non-expansion if there wasn't a third party involved? 3. White Diamond also mentions "Lesser Lifeforms". Now true this may just apply to the other gems, it seems odd that, in context, the full line is: "I've been saying please and thank you even to lower lifeforms!" The wording makes it seem like this group of lesser lifeforms are what WD considers to be less then dirt, and, while the other gem types could fit the category, it seems more likely that the Diamonds would see organic life in such a manner, as none them really cared for the humans' destruction during the colonization process of Earth or the events of the Cluster. Therefore, evidence points that, within the media itself, that there *are* other intelligent races out there, which means that there would probably still be a faction pissed off about not having the Diamonds destroyed completely.

You have this same problem in Naruto. The amount of people who will stand up to defend Itachi Uchiha's actions, and the arguments they use, is not just disturbing, it's frightening and shameful. There was also the Rose Quartzes who ALL had their gems collectively bubbled (And the subsequent production of their gem type halted) and just left to float inside the Zoo space station, all for the crimes of one individual. And judging by the show's dialogue, if it had not been for Blue's overwhelming sentimentality, they would have been shattered. Also, something else odd about what Awestruck Vox said that you didn't cover was... if the Diamonds were just jumping from one "unintelligent animals and plants ONLY" having planet to the next, that would still be extremely horrific. That would still be, if not directly genocide, comparable to it. I know the argument that genocide only applies to "people" can be raised, but it's certainly in the same ballpark of cruelty. Eradicating entire species of animals and plants is still a heinous crime that makes them tyrants that need to be stopped.

Tbh I don’t think anyone can argue the diamonds aren’t genocidal. However I actually believe the diamonds weren’t really redeemed per se. Nobody really likes the diamonds but they did what they had to to stop anyone further from getting hurt. The difference is it’s not forgiveness, it’s tolerance to beings way more powerful than anyone else that could still snap at any time, just to ensure it keeps peace. It’s very similar to Aang taking the firelords bending and not killing him, except SU isn’t as graceful since the writing fails to give the diamonds any consequences for their actions. In my opinion anyway, I don’t believe it was meant as a redemption arc but idk. That’s just how I interpreted it.

Problem is, she labels the Diamonds as Fascist when it is naïve and childish to do so. That makes her lose quite a bit of credibility in my eyes.

Justme their style of leadership is more akin to absolute monarchism. The thing is, being authoritarian does not make you fascist. In order to be Fascist you have to be authoritarian (unless you’re a National Anarchist) and culturally right winged. Being culturally right winged can be broken into three categories: 1. Cultural axis: cultural right want to preserve their culture over all and other such stuff 2. Social Axis: Social issues are stuff like the LGBTQ+ community, abortion etc... 3. Ethnic Axis: Ethnic right wants racial purity for example. The gems have no concept of culture or ethnicity. And so cannot be ethnically right winged or culturally right winged. Thus, it is impossible for them to be Fascist
