If everyone just stopped paying and cancelled their licence that they already have, the BBC will have no other choice than to listen to either considerably reduce the licence fee or if they chose to go down the road of making the entire BBC a subscription based service. They can't take the whole of the UK up in court to prosecute for non paying of the licence!

If the BBC lost the license funding they would have to be more sensible about paying outrageous fee's to the likes of Linekar and other presenters, Advertising is the way forwards to free up people who are not able to afford their license from the stress of being harrased by the BBC Goons at their doors.

With the fee going up to £169.50 I can see some cancelling their licence's whether it's a weekly payment, which they might have overpaid if they've being paying £6 per week for years, or the monthly DD. They might cancel in Feb. and take out a new licence in March for £159 then not pay at all in 2025 no matter how much the fee increases by. Some will cancel but keep watching live as shown TV in the knowledge that all they have to do if a goon knocks on their door is ask who they are then say not interested if they say TV Licensing ar just shut the door if they don't or won't say who they are!

I don't buy a TVL through choice but other family members do because they with other channels snd Sky. As they are watching its a requirement to have or risk prosecution Now I agree TVL should be scrapped as its out dated. Now I remember when it was equipment capable of receiving so if you owned a TV or computer with tuner at the time you had to have a TVL, but commonsense prevailed and it was changed to the current legislation. We can only hope commonsense will prevail once more

After seeing your videos, I cancelled my tv licence over 2 years ago and got a 5 month rebate on the remaining time. It was the best thing I ever did. I have 2 homes, so that would have ment over 300 quid to endure the rubbish. I only ever watched it for news anyway. This summer I removed all the aerials and dishes from my property as by then I had discovered the wonders of streaming. If it all became free tomorrow I would still never watch the stuff, as I realised 20 years ago that I hardly watched bbc. When I see it when I visit friends it only makes me feel more smug that I don't have it. Cancel it people, and never look back...

No surprises with the poll results, thanks to you I am no longer paying or watching any live TV, I actually disagree with the header on your site saying you can watch 90% of what you want without a license I think you need to move that up to 99% in my opinion. Surely in this day and age people are watching more on-demand as it is far better you can stop / pause it and return whenever for what ever the reason may be knock at the door - mobile ringing etc etc Why anybody wants any live TV is beyond me it is the 21st century after all is said and done. And yep I can watch 100% of what i want without the license :) - maybe you should do a poll on how much the percentage of what people want to watch is not actually live :) The result might be surprising.

The TV license fee is a charge for the right to operate television receivers at that address. Note the plural. One license = unlimited TVs. The fees are collected by the GOVERNMENT and then parceled out among the companies who maintain the infrastructure and the BBC to make content. At the very beginning of broadcast TV ( 2nd Nov 1936), there was only the BBC broadcasting. This was live content for only a few hours per day and only in the London area. In today's world, we have multiple broadcasters yet the BBC still is funded in the same way it was back in the 1930's. That needs to change.

If the BBC went subscription based the cost would probably be reduced from the current £13.25 (£14.08 at the increase) then those who want the BBC content would subscribe. The current BBC could be taken into the commercial arm and sold off to the British Public (by putting a ban on European and Foreign share ownership) I am sure it would be profitable venture. Then no TVL and open to watch any channel. It's only the Western world who seem to have TVL's. The Middle east and eastern Asia don't have TVL's but have access to reasonable free tv through advertisements or subscription base satellite or cable services. It's just a another government tax

Hi what I don't understand is why all the other channels are allowing them to not allow people to watch their channels without a licence. Surely it's in the best interests to change this decision. I can sort of understand ITV as they share some studios and stuff but the likes of sky and virgin and some others these are big companies with the money and power to change them . This may mean people are more likely to spend their money on their channels and not the BBC tax. You thoughts?

I live in the states and the problem is these networks stuff between 5to 10 ads in the breaks so you lose track of the plot and the show are supposed to run for a hour but actually they run less than 50 minutes the rest is trying to sell you crap you don't really need

30 years I've been saying they DO advertise their own stuff between shows so they might as well eff off the license fee and advertise normally. I used to either get ignored on the subject or given looks like I was crazy. Hello there how do the tv license people think that vulnerable people like us are going to afford the tv license when it goes up to £169.50 when we could be using all that money that we will have to pay for a tv license when we could spend it on some that we really want to spend it one like a vehicle could drive myself to places that are too far to walk because I have a leaning disability I can't drive a normal car so why do you tv license people think that you can take all that money for a piece of paper when I could use it to get a vehicle that I could drive myself anywhere I want to go .&I hate having to pay for a tv license from Rachel

I don't want to be watching a film and have it interrupted by ads, however there is a solution They could run say 5 minutes of ads before the film, allowing time to prepare refreshments etc, then have a sponsor for the film, they could leave a small clickable logo in a top corner for those that are interested.

Hey Jon, could you give us your thoughts on how and why we never seem to hear anything from the bosses or boards of the other big channels about this situation. The way I see it they are adversely affected by the BBC’s greed as the more people that stop watching the BBC legally are also not watching the other channels either. As they exist on the strength of advertising, should the effectiveness of that advertising drop then ultimately they will lose revenue. I’m suprised they haven’t added their two penneth to the arguement !!

I don't know how many readers the "Daily Mirror" has. Most, though, will only look at the pictures. That may explain the low numbers responding to the poll. The difference between showing "idents" and showing adverts placed, and paid for, by other companies should be quite obvious. Anyway, the BBC will never show adverts.
