englishfulltime.com/sound-bank
Hey, don't miss our Fluency Breakthrough Challenge! We start VERY SOON in July 2023. Get on the waitlist here: englishfulltime.com/waitlist-...
I'm sure we've all seen those "don't say very" videos, and maybe you've even been avoiding the word so you don't sound "boring" and "basic" in English. Well, it's time for some truth bombs that I wish I didn't even have to say. There is NOTHING wrong with the word "very" and it's actually VERY popular in English. Teachers who tell you not to say very are, at best, trying to help you learn synonyms and, at worst, trying to capitalize on your fear of sounding "unintelligent" in English so they get more views on their videos. Let me say this again, there is NOTHING wrong with the word "very." It's an intensifier that we use all the time in English. So, in this video, I show you how to use it "like a native" PLUS I show you a bunch of other intensifiers and how to use them. And if you are worried about sounding "boring" in English, just stick around till the end of the video because that's where I explain what you need to do to be "interesting" and expressive when you speak.
FUN FACT: This video was originally 30 minutes long and my husband Renzo (aka my video editor and our quality control guy) cut out most of the video because I was ranting about how stupid these "don't say very" videos are, haha. Good job, Ren! Thank you for helping me keep my content professional. 🤣

In my opinion, native speakers seem to be using very every other sentence and honestly I don't know why they should not use it. Stephanie your english channel is the VERY best and I look forward to your next video VERY VERY much! Happy holidays and amazing new year to you and your family!

Hi, Stephanie, how are you? Saudações from brazil. I've been learning English for almost 3 years, and throughout this period I've really stopped translating English words to Portuguese, so i can speak in English spontaneously. For the last days I've been following you on KZbin and i can understand you clearly, you speak VERY well 👍👍

I just found this channel and I need to tell you Stephanie many many thanks for your efforts to do this for us❤🙏 I have already seen plenty of contents about the "don't say that.." and yeah it's true, totally confusing to learn a language if I concentrate on the "don't" things. I completely understand if someone needs an IELTS or any other document about the result but usually most of the people don't talk with complicated expressions and words (except in some specific area, example the science). If someone does he will get in trouble and he needs to explain about his speech a lot. ☺️ I think there is one main goal of the language: transport the information the shortest time what we can. I wish you Stephanie the best, I appreciate again your help and support 🌞👋🙏

Hey Stefanie, I counted you say “very” 35 times, but in your voice it doesn’t sound repetitive at all. Thanks for the explanation about the different intensifiers. I love your facial expressions with the examples you used, this reminds to be more emotional when speaking American English to bring emphasis to my sentences. Happy New Years to you, your Team and your family. Keep up the great work! 🥳
@TheEnglishCoach
@TheEnglishCoach Жыл бұрын
Yes! Just keep in mind that facial expressions as you communicate should be natural and come from who and how you are. Otherwise it might look fake and/or forced. Also, just an extra tip, facial expressions and body language tend to match the rhythm of the speech, meaning we make our biggest movements during the words that are the MOST STRESSED in the phrase or sentence we are saying. I hope that helps :D

I think the main point of using alternative words for ''very'' as a synonym is because in the speaking part of any International exam, epically for IELTS, the examiners use to measure your ability on using vocabulary by check how many you repeat usual words for answering their questions, and the more you use different words the more score that you will get.

Thank you very much for the video. I think the idea behind "not using very" is not to stay silent, but to not get stuck on that word. The videos I've seen about "not using very" are for those who are in their comfort zone saying Very all the time (like me) instead of learning synonyms in order to increasing vocabulary. I'd like to use Very because I choose to, not because it's the only option I ve

This was a very good explanation about this word. Thank you very much. I totally hate those "don't say x if you want to sound native" videos. Every English speakers use basic words. In fact, most advance vocabulary isn't used by natives in daily life. Mainly their regional slang. I think idioms and some sayings can be good to learn but, unless you need that advance vocabulary because of your job or something, you don't need to know them. I like it when they say "don't use this word all the time, learn some alternatives". That sounds so much better because it's never bad to learn synonyms. Actually, when natives use advance vocabulary in my native language I get impressed because I'm not used to saying that word or because I didn't know the word before.
