Just a fun bit of trivia, the brokenhearted aka "beating heart" bride DOES have a backstory and it's quite long and complicated and ties into an unused concept. I was a cast member for 4 years from 2001-05 and this story was taught to us as part of orientation: Originally, Haunted (Mansion) and Pirates (of the Caribbean) were meant to be linked. The mansion was to have been purchased by a sea captain for his young bride, Priscilla. The couple was very happy together in the beginning. Until one day when the captain was gone and Priscilla was bored and decided to go into the attic and look through it... She discovered a chest there filled with gold, jewels and other plunder. It seems her dear husband was a pirate. And not just ANY pirate...through more rifling through the attic, she came to find out he was the notorious Captain Blood! Upon his return, Priscilla confronted him with what she had found. The captain then siezed his young wife and flung her down a well, drowning her. This well was to be in front of the house when the attraction was still meant to be a walkthrough - and it would not be filled with water, but blood. Upon leaning down over the well, a voice would say, "Ding dong bell, Priscilla's in the well. Who put her in? The evil cap-i-tan!" Then when you entered the mansion as part of a tour, you would enter a room with a picture of a sea captain. As the lights went out in the room, a storm with lightning and rain would lash the deck in the portrait where the sea captain stood. As the portrait filled with water, a projected effect of a bride with a beating heart would come through the wall, screaming. She would lunge at the captain, both would disappear and water would pour out of the painting into the room. This was abandoned because they could not get the water effect to work right, and because eventually the walkthrough was abandoned in favor of a ride. However, this is the reason the bride stands in the attic (where she found the evidence of her husband's crimes) and why her heart is broken (because her love murdered her).

The Blowing Ghost (actual name of the effect) in the Seance room was removed intentionally by an Imagineer in 2003. His reasoning was, Leota had not finished the ritual, so we shouldn't be able to "see" any ghosts at that point. Source: I was a Cast Member at the Haunted Mansion in Florida at the time. I happened to be in the break room while he was explaining this, on a phone call to his team. Edit: If it was moved to the graveyard that was after my time. But that would match the reasoning I heard him give, since once you are in the GY the ghosts are now materialized

Something I noticed a while ago, was that they removed an entire section of dialogue from the ride, specifically the conservatory, and hallway before Madame Leota. “All our ghosts have been DYING to meet you! This one can hardly contain himself! Unfortunately, they all seem to have trouble getting through. Perhaps Madame Leota can establish contact. She has a remarkable head for materializing the disembodied.” Did they ever give an explanation on why these lines were removed?
@FreedomforHaiti

According to this video, the materializing ghosts near Madame Leota are no longer there. Since that dialog refers to them, I guess they decided to take it out.

I was going to comment on the removal of the lines as well. I remember they removed those lines, then put them back for a while, then removed them again. I've heard various reasons, such as that the addition of Spanish safety spiels at the loading dock threw of the timing of those lines, so that it basically went straight from "...shhh listen" to the next line and no longer had the same dramatic effect. I have no idea how true that is, though, but I remember some people saying that over at MiceChat many years ago. That explanation still seems weird to me, though.
@ElFreakinCid

Honestly, from what I can tell, it's likely the thrown-off timing and the fact that the audio can be so easily drowned out by the loud sounds of the hallway.

I wish they would do away with Constance Hatchaway and bring back the Beating Heart Bride. With the BHB, there was an element of mystery to her. You don't know who she is, what her story is, or why she's there. All you know is that she is a mournful-looking bride, looking at you wistfully as her heartbeat reverberates through the room. That allowed people to have fun speculating about her and what her backstory was, allowing people's imaginations to come into play! But now, it's pretty cut and dry-- Constance is a black widow who cuts off her husbands' heads. No mystery or imagination involved. It's just not as fun! And also, I would LOATHE to see the Disneyland Hitchhiking Ghosts replaced with CGI! I'm a strong believer that practical effects are much more immersive and should be used when at all possible!! Removing them would be a tragedy!

I do not want to see the CGI hitchhiking ghosts added to the Disneyland mansion. They look flat and unrealistic on the screen, which you can see if you have good eyes. Half of the time I ride the WDW version, the ghosts don't work (they may not appear in a mirror, they may perform the wrong action, they may not be properly aligned with the Doom Buggy, etc.). The original hitchhiking ghosts, while they don't do much, look more realistic because they are REAL figures and the effect is more convincing than the terrible CGI one that WDW currently has.

I really hate that they changed originals. I can understand it, but it hurts- like something beloved had died and you can no longer visit. CGI is cheap. And it shows. Making something more detailed and realistic doesn’t mean it will be better. It, a lot of times- and especially when used for fright themes- makes for less effect. The mind likes mystery and likes to fill in the blanks. CGI is “demanding”, and it’s not fun. The animatronics and projections have so much more character because it allows the audience’s imaginations to have control. There’s no artistry in CGI where as these older effects were hand made with dedication and devotion...that shows. Computer effects are flat even though visually they are very detailed. It just looks more fake and spoils the effects.

You hit the nail on the head mondenkindqueen. The attic scene is the climax of the spooky part of the ride before descending into the more lighthearted graveyard scene. As such Disney really wants the bride to be creepy, but she feels really forced. The psychotic murderous bride angle doesn't work for me because she doesn't appear threatening in any way. She just stands there, looking off in the wrong direction while delivering empty one-liners through a corny voice effect. The projection effect is underwhelming and just pulls me out of the magic of the ride.

Puns are not threatening and her puns weren’t funny. They just don’t fit. She doesn’t really fit. The Haunted Mansion as it stands, does not really have room for an overarching story, and her inclusion just feels disjointed from the rest of the House. It COULD work though, the problem is that she’s NOT focused on anyone. Who is she threatening with her puns? If she MUST be there, she needs to threaten US. Get angry that we are intruding. Threaten us for finding out her secret. With a character like that, you need go big or go home. If you can’t tie her into the rest of story, tie US into her story. I feel they were “frightened” (pun unintentional, I swear) and didn’t want to scare children too much. Unfortunately, it just leaves you with a lukewarm experience.

To be honest a fan and smoke/mist machine could solve about half of those issues. Every 2-5 minutes* a bit of mist is released, and a fan blows from a grate under the reins, or from the hearse itself. The harness stays still but some loose leather reins move in the breeze. Anyone standing near the front feels air, as if a ghost horse is snorting in their direction. The hardest part would be masking the mechanical noises. This could be solved in one of two ways: a sound effect of a horse snorting is played... *or alternatively, and relating to how frequent its triggered: a voice activated system could be introduced. A guest approaches the herse and says something like "giddyup!" Or " whoa!" The guests own command would have to be fairly loud. And the mechanical noises would be less a flaw, and more a sign the guest did something right. There would then be a short cooldown... say 30 seconds to 2 minutes before another input could be registered. For events the mist could be left running, and a projector could create the image of a horse standing in the reigns. Natural wind would make the horse appwar to be a wispy apparition

When I would go to DL as a kid my favorite attraction was (and still is) the Haunted Mansion. It birthed a love of all things horror and scary in me, and I desperately wanted to live in the mansion forever. When I went back at the age of 33 for Leap Day I told my wife that I always wished the buggies would break down so I could get off and hide in there. And then...dum, dum, duuuuum, the ride stopped a moment later. I was a grown man, squealing like an eight year old girl at the sight of Cinderella. I almost diiiied with gleeee. Bwahaha!

I got some suggestions for the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland: 1. Bringing back the pop-up ghosts (in wedding clothes that shout "I do!" ) and the animatronic bats in the attic, the cold air effect and flowing window curtains (as well as the footsteps sound effects) in the Endless Hallway, the ghost in the Seance Room (either rediscovered by imagineers or a copy of the original depending if the original ghost prop is found or not), and the fog effect for the ghost in the coffin. 2. Maybe adding various wolf, dog, and coyote bowls as ambient noises in the outside entrance and the outside exit of the Haunted Mansion. 3. Adding more animatronic ravens, this time on the real and/or fake trees in the outside parts of the entrance and exit of the Haunted Mansion. I hope these suggestions have been approved and confirmed to be coming to the Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. ^_^

@@andrewchung2940 Of course, due to the overwhelmingly frightening nature of it & audiences/park guests NOT understanding that they were supposed to BE/EMBODY Snow White in the attraction, the Fantasyland dark ride WAS eventually tamed/toned down, with one stateside park actually losing their version of it with the New Fantasyland expansion, in favor of the Seven Dwarves Mine Train, loosely tailored after the recent 7D cartoon series.

I must confess I'm very impressed with how factual this video is! I only caught two mistakes so I just thought I'd mention them, even though they are minor... The Hatbox Ghost seen in the Osmond special is actually the unused Walt Disney World figure. At the point they filmed the footage they knew he was not going to be installed so that's why he's seen in a different pose holding a pain can. The Pop Up Ghosts in the Disneyland Attic never received the "Groomsman" attire. This was only done at Walt Disney World, which is odd since they never got the "I Do" sound effects or the wedding march (until after they removed them entirely for the 2007 refurbishment) Overall though I'm pleased with your video since there's so many Mansion ones that spread false information out there. Great Job on this one!

I wouldn’t mind a little more spook in the ride, I love the haunted mansion and how iconic it is. My ONLY issue with the ride in both parks is the “control” of it. I visited Disneyland a few years ago, of course it had to be a busy day, but we got on the ride and me, my friend, and my sister all wanted to ride together. We didn’t know it was 2 per seat and no one was organizing people into carts. This ended up with my sister being separated, the ride had to be stopped for a second, and we continued. It. Stopped. Six. Times. It got old. My friend who’s a passholder said it’s super disorganized. In magic kingdom, I can’t recall ever stopping like in Disneyland. But towards the end there’s a small bride before you get off saying “hurry baaaaack...remember to bring your death certificate”. And the ride got held up and I can’t count how many times I heard the bride say that. It was a while. Popular rides mean lots of people but YEESH.

I once wrote a story a few years ago. Basically, it comes up with a backstory for the Haunted Mansion. Basically, it reveals the identity of Master Gracey as Harry Gracey a friend of George Hightower the original owner of the Mansion in the current version. The Ghost Host is also revealed to be Hightower’s butler Flynn and Madema Leota is revealed to have cursed the Mansion after Constance killed George and then killed Leota, Flynn and Harry Gracey when they tried to stop her from taking George’s fortune. Ever since then, the Mansion now has the 999 ghosts with them being all spirits who failed to cross over to the afterlife. The Hatbox Ghost makes a cameo appearance (His origins still being unknown) as well as a cameo from Captain Gore who was from one of the original scrapped concepts for the Mansion in which it was planned as a walkthrough with Gore as the main focus. In addition, I also included deceased cowboys in the Mansion as a reference to the scrapped Western theme from the Mansion’s development. There is also a reference to the Museum Of The Weird concept as well. Basically it’s a love letter to the Mansion and ties together the ride’s backstory to all of the scrapped concepts from its planning.

Then a single light from above illuminated a *corpse being lowered to the crowd from a chain????* My dad went "oh man should we walk closer??" and I started slapping his head in protest and was scream-crying. Connie is only the Black Widow Bride from '06-present. The previous Beating Heart Bride, though officially unnamed in the end, went by many other names regardless. Starting with Priscilla Gore during Ken Anderson's Captain Gore/Captain Blood narrative featuring the Sea Captain/Mariner as the woeful bride's questionable fiancee in a manner akin to infamous pirate Blackbeard to possibly bridge a link between Pirates of the Caribbean & Haunted Mansion as they were the last park projects conceived with Uncle Walt's initial input - not counting the purported plans for the future E.P.C.O.T that never materialized - before his own untimely passing put the divergent styles of the Mansion into limbo until X. Atencio's catchy theme lyrics coupled with Buddy Baker's ominous score that repeats the same overarching track in different keys was used to somewhat haphazardly merge the directly frightening background atmosphere of Claude Coats with the overtly comedic puns & sight gags of Marc Davis to create the disjointed nature of the ride in its fully realized form, Emily Cavanaugh Gracey nee De Claire of Gracey Manor for the 999 grim, grinning Ghost Gallery of obituaries (character bios) once occupying doombuggies.com as created by both ex-Cast Members & super fans of the ride lore alike on top of the unfortunate bride being named thus for the corresponding Haunted Mansion Comic Book from SLG Comics, renamed in 2003 yet again but this time to Elizabeth Henshaw per that year's comedic farce film wherein stale comedian Eddie Murphy's realtor character of Jim Evers stole the rightful spotlight away from the clearly cursed & not-so Happy Haunts the movie was supposed to be about so that the film's solid score & foreboding atmosphere before all of the campy cheesiness ruined it served as the movie's only redeeming qualities to the point that horror buff Guillermo Del Toro had been tossing around ideas for a proper scary but funny tribute to the beloved attraction just to have his plans seemingly put on indefinite hold until Disney ultimately put the kibosh on the purported film Del Toro claimed would shine a light on the resurrected Hatbox Ghost in spite of a teaser for the scrapped feature at D23 a few years back featuring Corey Burton doing his near dead-on Paul Frees impression as The Ghost Host by reciting the Stretching Room's iconic opening dialog for the teaser's chilling voice-over against a backtrack throughout the rest of the famous instrumental used & lastly, Beating-Heart was simply called Bernadette for alliterative purposes within the Lonesome Manor level located in Bog Easy from the Epic Mickey video games. However, despite being a long-term doombug (a dedicated fan of The Haunted Mansion & its counterparts), I have never heard of Beating-Heart (also called Bleeding Heart by some) ever being referred to as Kate Candle Wick before. Are you sure you didn't just invent that name for the previous melancholy bride yourself?

As a magician’s assistant, my magician boss/mentor and I performed for a big wig at Disney, for a family event (birthday party and family reunion). We were paid well, and as a bonus we got a Signature Passport which allowed us to park for free at Disneyland. I enjoyed going there when I could.

0:40 LOL XD, you forgot to add the "But fair warning, Yesterworld will not be responsible for any of the nightmares you may have." part before the Yesterworld intro, since some (possibly many) toddlers and babies were and are scared of and had nightmares about the ghosts of Haunted Mansion.

I remember the popup ghosts and the BHB back in the 90's the ride use to scare me when I was a little kid, one time we were parking my stroller over by the Haunted Mansion but we were going to ride splash mountain but I started to freak out thinking we were going on the Haunted Mansion

I REALLY wish Disneyland would get rid of Chatty Cathy (...I mean [ugh] "Constance") and bring back one of the scary ghost brides (perhaps one based on that corpse-y original). The projection looks terrible and her voice is hokey at best. The bride used to be my favorite ghost in the ride and they RUINED her! All these year later I'm actually more bitter about it than I was when the change first happened.

Another tiny thing: when they’re we’re in the process of adding the Hatbox Ghost they added a wall in the attic with a window frame. This window showed a image of a bat (same ones on the railings I believe) that would fly off of its perch before returning. It wasn’t there for long of course.

Hattie's hat trick with his decapitated head was supposed to synch up with the original bride's glowing heart & thudding heartbeat & since a scheming, conniving, treacherous, selfish, patronizing, bad pun-spewing Black Widow bitch like Constance is incapable of any positive feeling except murderous glee, she cannot have a heart worth beating, even though the previous bride's effect is still played, albeit drowned out by the Bridal Chrous dialed up louder & Connie's cringy, cheesy lines mocking traditional wedding vows overtaking it so it takes a trained ear to catch it. So, unless they redo the Mansion Attic back to any of its 1969-2006 variations & axe - pardon my own bad pun - the Black Widow for an update to her Beating Heart predecessor, ol' Hatbox stays on the veranda where he currently is located.
