Hey all, hope you enjoy this exploration of how The Carousel of Progress has evolved over the years. It was fun digging into some of the lesser known aspect of the attraction, and I laugh at myself now for wondering if there'd be enough to fill an entire video at first, as it's officially the first episode to run over 20 minutes! Also, remember that even if you're not having the best time of your life, there's always a great big beautiful tomorrow :)

Bravo my friend, bravo. I have lived in Florida my entire life and I've been to the Magic Kingdom over the last 37 years and I remember most of the changes you have noted. I still make it a point to ride the Carousel of Progress! And I always think to myself I would crap my pants if I were locked in there overnight! Lol

If you're wondering what daughter was doing in act 3; that thing was called what you think it was: either a "vibrating belt" or a "reducing belt". Supposedly, to thin the waist or burn off calories/belly. Didn't work, disappeared from the market in the early 80's.

The only problem with this ride is that they only feel the need to majorly update the final decade. Theres too big of gap between the final decade and the 1940s.

@d.m.collins1501

@@marcoantoniogarcia38 I like that idea--and I definitely would enjoy it! But realistically I think they'd need to appeal to children who won't know much about that decade and might be confused seeing an 100% retro Carousel of Progress. I think it would be more impressive to update the four vignettes so that they are further spaced out--maybe start in 1880, then have a 20's one, a 1960s one, and modern day. This way, they could reuse the original "modern day" animatronics and props and place them in the 1960s vignette as an easter egg for fans of the original attraction while still bringing it up to date.

They need to change the last scene back to the 60s and say something like, “I can only imagine what the future holds, and what dreams and achievements we will accomplish. As Walt Disney said “times and conditions change so rapidly that we must keep our aim constantly focused on the future” We are in control of our future, we must dream and then take action and see to it that those dreams become a reality. Always look to the future”... etc.. that way the show doesn’t age and it stops trying to predict the future and has us, the audience, imagine it for ourselves.

I think what really shows the age of the current (1994-present) version of the Carousel of Progress is that LaserDisc is mentioned in the future act. You might think LaserDisc is BlueRay, DVD, CD, or some generic name for those types of digital discs...nope, this was an analog format the size of a record (12 inches/30 cm), and it was competing with VHS and Betamax. And yet, the format did support some features you'd expect of DVDs and BlueRay, like being able to pause on a frame without flickering, interactivity, and even 5:3 1035i video, making it an early HD video format. It found use in some kiosks around EPCOT early in the park's history.
@smooshiebear80
@smooshiebear80 5 жыл бұрын
Tim Southwick Yup, I remember seeing that and was like, “Woah, that’s going back a few years!” It made me laugh. LaserDiscs were sort of the precursor of the dvd. Now DVDs, and even Blu-ray is being phased out in favor of digital streaming. It seriously needed updating ten years ago!

The daughter was originally with her boyfriend inside the house in the 1920s scene. Mother says, “Jane! It’s after 9:30!” And the boyfriend turns the lamp off. This scene was in both the NY and CA versions. When the show opened in FL in 1975, Jane was alone in her room with flag pendants. This was changed in the 90s to her being dressed as the Statue of Liberty

I just got a shock from seeing Walt with a GE pin... I mean, I already knew about his connections with GE here, but just... that symbol is as ingrained in my childhood memories as are his face and name. Seeing them together in one image just came full force. I remember I had a really weird liking for the GE symbol as a child. We had a GE landline in the 90's at our house and there were a lot of days where if I was bored, I would go play with mom's phone in the bedroom, which was our GE model and every time I played with it, I always wound up examining and admiring the design of the symbol on the phone... Even to this day, I still find it amazing that whoever designed it was able to work company initials into something that looks like an ornate pattern. It also shocks me today that kids aren't familiar with the image because of cellphones...

No one's talking to us or each other, they're just staring at their phones and they're 75 lbs. heavier. A housekeeper robot on tank treads roams the stage dusting and cleaning. The telescreen is a KZbin broadcast of World President Thunberg announcing the melting of Antartica and yelling at everyone for not eating their quota of insects. The childrens' genders are reversed. President Thunberg ends her speech regretting her necessary final decision as laser lights from every handheld device contact the figures' eyes and the figures momentarily jerk before each's head lets off a plume of smoke and they slump. The robot goes to a console and announces the property is secured. Lights down

I would say that the current Act 4 is pretty accurate for "modern day", maybe change the reference of Laser Disks to something to do with streaming service (of course it could stay as is, considering it is the context of Grandpa), I think most accurate is the oven (although not mentioned for obvious reasons) is essentially Alexa, and even includes the drawbacks of voice activated technology.

I got it all solved! Ok so here's how it goes: -The narrator, we can gather was born in the late 1800s which is why he's able to tell us so much about the turn of the century. -When we see the narrator again, in the 1920s he is now the father of his first born son (who is the grandfather in the final scene) -In the Final scene (supposedly taken place in the 1980s) we see the narrators son (who is the grandfather), and his wife (the grandmother playing the video games) the grandfathers own kids, (which are the man in the green apron and the woman at the desk) And their children. -We notice the original narrator (the grandkids great great grandfather) is no longer seen in the final decade (presumed to have since passed away) and has now most likely taken up residence inside the Haunted Mansion! Which is why his grandson is the one left to tell us about the newest decade! It all makes sense!

They did do some very minor changes on the set over the years to the final act that I noticed. They updated the TV in my mom noticed that they put a phone in everyone's hand. She also thinks that they switched everyone's shoes

Okay now I'm getting my own version of the Mandela Effect. I could have sworn the early 80's version of the Carousel of Progress had a final scene: THE FUTURE. Where the family actually had it's own home robot that looked kind of similar to Paulie's in Rocky IV.

The Laserdisc comment is quite dated now, those wound up being s flash in the pan. The Carousel of Progress highlighted roughly the past hundred years of progress. IMO, it's due a major overhaul maybe with 30 year gaps now starting from the 1920s. That would make the acts 1920s, 1950s, 1980's then current time, which would be a good flow from the early days of electricity to todays tech-driven world. (This is the opinion of an 80s kid)

I remember when the Carousel of Progress had a nuclear power plant out the back window of one scene. The narration included something about some people say go back but we have to go forward, making progress. I have never seen this mentioned in these Disney World summaries. Does anyone else remember this? I think the reactor disappeared after the Three Mile Island problem.

I just went on CoP yesterday, so here’s the changes I noticed for 2022. No real big modifications to voices, lines, or scenes. However in the final scene, they’ve given all of them a bit more “modern” look. Daughter now has bangs and a ponytail, and is opening a present that is (I believe) a pair of Ugg boots. Grandmother got a haircut, Father was given a younger more “modern dad” look. In past versions, the final scene showed an older version of the dad to match the older versions of the kids. However here he looks the same age as ever, and is now clean shaven. He also got a new outfit, as did Mother and Son. No technology has changed, but this is just something fun me and my family noticed as often goers of the ride.

I absolutely love your videos. Many of these rides, minus a few, I remember and connect with you as some of the timeless rides that sadly had to be shut down. Many I never got to experience and wish I had. Sadly some, like The Great Movie Ride, my boyfriend will never experience as I know he would have loved. Thank you so much for your time and superior dedication to make these videos for Disney fans like myself.

To me, the theme of the carousel of progress is not the progression over the last century and decades, but it comes down to the lyrics of the main song itself. For a great big beautiful tomorrow. It's just TOMORROW. nothing grandiose, nothing overly ambitious. Just... Having a better tomorrow. However that manifests for the self.

I absolutely ADORE Carousel of Progress, I've watched all of the videos of its 'progress' that I can find, and I love the feeling of time travel it has:) I love how the futures are right out of Back to the Future Part II and then think about how they're the past now.

It’s pretty evident that while in the early 60’s women being homemakers wasn’t considered a bad thing by 1975 Second Feminism Movement was sweeping America and presumably GE was worried that historical accuracy aside that it would be perceived by the new audience as a tad sexist since those changes. It is called Carasoul of PROGRESS after all. Although I guess eventually they went for the more “was it a good thing? No, But that was just how women lived back then.” And dear god please nobody leave any “Feminism is Satan incarnate” comments!
