We went through the same thing , what we all know is they are part of the family and as far as traveling they travel just fine . Sure it takes more planning , but when you see them having fun in a new environment it’s worth all the effort . Unless you are traveling internationally it’s really no big deal . Hotels , lodges , B & Bs are much more accepting to have you bring your pets along. We travel with both our cat and dog and they love it . They are social animals just like us :-)

Steve Koehly was my first roommate in college and I haven't laid eyes on him since we left the University of Missouri. I can tell all of you watching this that he's as genuine a human being as anyone on this planet, and it was great to "see him" again after all these years. Steve, that's a beautiful film about your love of Labs (particularly Sammie) and I sure enjoyed watching it and hearing from you and your son. I wish you the best. Jim Reed

Our old lab wouldn't let us retire her. She would block the door out of the house and bark until she got to go along. We tried to out smart her and just keep her in the vehicle but she would break out of the custom kennel in the back then out the window. I remember shooting a few birds and magically having a her show up at my side with a bird in her mouth. So we said screw it and let her hunt till her last days. We went with the theory let her do what she loves.

What an amazing story. Sure, I’m a YETI fan but I would love to shake the hands of this film crew and the art director. 1. Opening shot of the steam on the dog. 2. The collar being held after the loss 3. The head in the blind and 4. That slow motion track right following young Sam’s leap into the water with the leaf flying at the end. Such a beautiful film

5 years ago I lost my best friend in a tragic accident. He died in my arms on the way to the vet. I miss him every single day. There is not a single day, honestly, where I dont think about him, or talk about him. My wife left a beautiful message on our memory about him this year, where she said : she hopes him and I meet again in life, so I can finally heal this pain. There's no greater bond, between a man, and his dog.

I'm going through this transition right now myself. My old fella made his final retrieve at 13 years old last fall. He's 14 now, this year as the leaves changed and the geese were flying, his eyes were bright and looking for birds, but the old body just can't handle it... It sucks each time I leave him standing at the back door as I try to sneak out for a hunt with the new pup. On the fresh side, knowing this was coming I looked hard for the right pup and brought him home summer of 2016. By the time he was a year old he had his WC, we finished Jr hunt a few weeks later and he is such a remarkable dog in the blind and in his personality, we've had out first real retrieves on opening day, he tracked a wounded bird through 100yrds of the thickest brush I've seen, and he has master hunt status in his blood as long as I can get him there... But I still miss the hunts with my old guy, even though he wasn't nearly as polished. I did manage to film his last retrieve, in our typically unconventional style. It's not easy saying good bye, but it makes me happy to know he is at home warm and dry and still enjoying his life... And it makes me cherish the new memories being made with the new fella.

The first time I saw this video, I was on a United flight from Washington to Austin, my headphones were packed, and I missed the first couple of minutes. But there was closed captioning, and the stunning visuals drew me in, then so did the story. I've always loved retrievers, and I've always loved to see them work, so I guess I was a natural audience. At some point the woman seated next to me noticed the tears that were running on to my shirt, noticed that it was a film about dogs. She moved to another seat. The video was there again on the return flight, but this time my seatmate was a German guy who understood little English. But I explained what the video was about, and so he watched. Then there were tears from both of us. Thank you Yeti. You make me remember Holly and Summer and Alex (who died far too soon) and now Monty, who is trying to learn. And yes, it brings tears every time I see it. Thanks.

Thank you for this film. Thank you most of all to Steve Koehly and family for sticking by Sam. It takes strength, love, patience, dedication, and empathy and all were shown by Steve. A lot of people, as was said, would rid themselves of an "inconvenient" dog. I just laid my 11 year old "inconvenient" dog to rest a month ago. When you bring a dog into a family, it's a life you must raise and honor regardless of complexity or individuality. If you want a robot, you're better off with wires and steel instead of flesh and blood. Rest well Sam.

Was out pheasant hunting with my buddies dogs yesterday. Such a great experience for us all, they are so happy flushing out the birds and bringing them back. Got home and took my dog out the beach to let her live her passion of chasing the frisbee. Never a more peaceful day and never a better day to be without my phone walking the fields. This story is such an inspiration to be doing things better in the future.

Beautiful story, Sammie lives on in you guys and little Sam. So do the rest of your pack. It is the harshest cruelty on earth that we outlive our pets. My cat has liver disease (a genetic thing) she's been fighting strong for a year now, vets said if it wasn't for how much I love her and care for her she'd be gone now. Put my life on hold for a whole year, hand fed her many times but she bounces back. Wish me luck. It's gonna be a hard one when she finally gives up the fight.

Sweet video but a tear jerker. I have a 11 y/o black lab I got from a rescue shelter. I'm not a hunter so never trained him to be a hunting dog. But he is smart and wants to please me. We've gone on a lot of hikes together and he loves to ride with me on the golf course. Goes everywhere with me even to my vacation condo on the gulf coast. I can see him slowing and dread the day I have to put him down. Will be tough to replace as he fits my personality perfectly. Still enjoying our time together........

Me and my dad raised birdogs in Lynchburg TN when there was still lots of quail. I don't know but I would say a bond grows deeper if the dog is like their master. The challenge is one of the reasons, but the understanding of that dogs personality resonates with its master and the bond grows stronger as they both search for that happy medium to which they can both move forward without conflict. Great story and one that touches an old dog guys heart.
