YFZ450 Cam Mod Part 2 (Requested)

Here is part 2 of 2 showing in more detail the cam mod process the video is about 20mins total for both parts.i tried to cover the complete process if there is anything i missed juts leave a comment or message me.

@crximportrider there are no long term effects that damage the motor from doing this mod.this mod changes the exhaust timing to that of the YZ450F dirtbike giving it more mid to top end power.both the YFZ450 Quad & YZ450F Bike use the same motor pretty much with only minor differances.

this mod is only for the YFZ450 and moving the exhaust 1 tooth back gives the quad more mid to high end performance just like the YZ450F dirt bike.

@mossow71 it moves the power range when you adjust the timing in the case of this you are moving some of the low end power to the mid range and some of the mid range power to the high end.

@slicksavage25 you turn the screaw till the plunger bottems out once it does you snug the bolt but not to tight cuz after you get it back on the quad you need to loosen it so the adjuster springs out and pushes against the cam chain guide.

thanks and glad it helped you out. i myself was happy with the performance increase.i also like the fact that this mod will in no way damage your quad since all you are doing is setting the exhaust timing to the same timing as the yz450f bike and they both are the same exact motors.

@mrcr125er pull the spark plug and try to start it or push it in gear and make sure the motor turns over.if all it is doing is clicking it may only need a new battery.

sounds like you might need to rejet the carb a little do to the mid range bog. i ran a #35 leak jet in mine and did the zip tie mod that helped with the low end bog. the Idle screw is located near the top of the carb usually hidden by the side panel,and the air/fuel screaw is under the carb to the back side of the float bowl. check my other videos for the zip tie mod it make a huge differance on the low end throttle responce.

moving the exhaust cam will give you better top end performance and a slight increase in top speed.

question why would you remove the cam chain tensioner why not just take the tension off the cam chain tensioner by screwing it in and taking the tension off the chain it's a waste of time the way you're doing it

@kotascott the 3rd mark to the right is the top dead center mark and the is mark you want to use when doing the cam mod.you may also wana do the ziptie mod also to help with the bottem end.you will also want to check and make sure your jetting is still good as sometimes you may need to change the main.

Did this Last night. I can tell ya if it is hard to start ot backfires ya went one tooth to Far. I did the same thing but hadd enough buddies there that had done it before to help me out. Went back one tooth and one hit of the button and she fired up no prob. Guess i was to excited to notice i went 2 teeth insted of one. GOOD VIDEO very helpfull.

sounds like it may have jumped a tooth or 2 on the intake cam when you were moving the exhaust cam. pull the 2 plgs on the side and the cover off the cams to double check and make sure the timing is still right. the intake punch mark should line up with the head when the bottom mark is at top dead center,and the exhaust cam should only be 1 tooth up from the head.

i have done that to on other things i have worked on lol it is a pain to get them back out without a small magnet. i use to have a small magnet on a string worked just as good as the tool.

hey. ok i also asked auto tech instructor juss to make sure and he sai di prolly skipped a tooth like u said. so took it apart and went back 1 tooth. tryed starting. took a bit ( hasnt been started since last summer but once) but she started. took it for a spin and man she pulls on top where i could get traction ( all wet and sloppy and tires are shit ). but still needs some work. mid and lower it bogs and juss doesnt seem right. my plan is to put thicker o ring on ap mod,

So couldnt you just let the cam chain tensioner on the motor, and just take the bolt out of it, and use the small screwdriver? Instead of taking it off just to do the same thing with it on.

i didn't really notice the low end loss because the YFZ as too much low end to start with,but i did notice the differance in the mid to top end.

@YFZ450Raptor350Rock torq is important on all nuts and bolts on your bike or quad cuz they can viberate loose if not torqed right.if you over torq the nuts or bolts can snap off and cauz major problems.

great videos man! Ive been watching a bunch of your vids on the yfz450. I just bought an 04 yfz450 after my 06 raptor got stolen and i plan to start digging into it and doing the mods youve been discussing in your videos. about the cam mod, im a little worried about trying it. Ive heard that it frees up an amazing amount of horsepower, however what are the long term effects. I plan on riding for a long time, and id like the yfz to run just as long. does this effect the life of the engine?

@bluesvt sometimes after this mod has been done to your quad some bikes may need a change in mainjet size. another tip after this mod is done when you go to start your quad when is has not been run at all for a day or 2 i found that befor i hit the started button it helps to give it 2 pumps of the throttle this basically primes the engine for starting.

@CGyfz450r from what i know they havent changed the stock cam timming on the YFZ's so you should be able to do this mod on any year or model YFZ.

FYI, doing this "mod" sets the cam timing to YZF450 specs. Yamaha advanced it one tooth for the YFZ450.

@Tooextrememx i remember everything was at top dead center on intake cam and exhaust cam was only one tooth up and and the top was at top dead center.i started it today and it was making that noise.mine needs a jettings i put a curtis sparks full system,dynatek cdi,and the cam mod but i went to change my spark plug its black with some carbon build up on it which makes no sence becuase it should be running lean right now not unless my fuel mixture screw needs to be turned to give it less gas

He showed you how to set the timing in the video you have to make sure its at tdc top dead center look at the markings I n the cams and the vrank spin it with the socket until its lined up and adjust otherwise

@slicksavage25 in the video i show how to reset the adjuster befor you put it back in.the screaw at the end of the adjuster is just a cover bolt the actual bolt to turn the plunger in is under that bolt.

No.if you have HotCams in your quad this mod is in the design of the hotcams so there is no need to do this.if you have tried to do this with hotcams it can cause poor performance and posably burn your valves.

i should have added to the video a suggestion to mark the cam chain where the dots on the cams line up before moving the cams that way you can tell better if you went too far or the intake cam jumped a tooth when doing this. i will add a annotation to the video with this suggestion.

Is running a higher octane fuel a major factor in timeing? Yamaha may have set it that way because yfz's require a 93 octane or something like that. i dont know for sure or anything but its just a guess.

i did the cam mod tonight and im pretty damn sure i did it right. put everything back together and tried starting it. all it does is crank n crank n crank..... and in between everyonce and a while it will backfire loud and scare shit outa me but never start. whatd i do???

Well I did the mod and had a little trouble starting but probably just BC of the fuel tank being off br now it will only idle about thirty seconds and die did I do something wrong or do you need to renegade it after then mod?

i did it with my yfz459 2009 fuel injection and it work but why then i read some where that it can do damage to my engine.. so its not good for all yfz?

Doesn't hurt anything. Only down side is hard starting. That can be corrected with jetting.

We got a new battery because that was my first concern when it started to turn but wouldnt start.It wont hold a charge.We can tell that the starter is week. I found a good used one on ebay for 35$ so im probably gonna jump on that one. I traded a 2000ktm 250exc for the yfz and it looks great(its the one on my profile picture) there was no way i wasnt gonna trade for it. haha

personally i would NEVER EVER do this. this is what is know as advanceing or retarding the timeing. which means the timeing of the valves opening and closeing are off. every easy to burn valves and mess things up. when the piston fires its letting the exause valve open sooner than it should. id never do this. and dont know y people are.

if you don't have the Oil Upgrade done i would definatly look into getting it done check out my other vids for the Important info video for 04-06 YFZ's. sitting on the quad the oil filter is on the right side next to the water pump if you look at my other vids you will see a black cover next to my water pump and that is where the oil filter is.also make sure after filling your oil to let the quad idle for a few mins without reving it up and then check the resiviour bottle to see if still full.
