Even his “toned down” approaches/personality closer to Duelist Kingdom and thereafter are still pretty hardcore: zero problem with enabling Kaiba to commit suicide (if not killing him, depending on how you want to look at it), much more black and white in his thinking than Yugi, and so on. I always interpreted the mellowing-down as him both trying to be less unruly for the sake of his host and coming to his senses a little bit after having gone truly crazy from solitary confinement for thousands of years.

The anime has Yami stop inflicting Penalty Games after the Duelist Kingdom arc without any explanation.

@@JThom529 Nah, he had a pretty high body count in the manga as well. He dabbled in psychological torture, and the season 0 anime softened some of his actual kills to 'only' mind rape, but before character development really kicked in, if Yami was out, someone was gonna die. Or at least just get set on fire. There's at least one manga instance where I'm *pretty* certain the victims would've survived (they were near a water source), but it certainly wasn't for lack of trying. It kinda makes me wonder if there isn't like, an arrest warrant out on Yugi. With that hair, he should be pretty easy to pick out of a lineup.

And the manga. Although he was more of the righteous avenging angel in the manga then he was in the show. In the show he was mostly just sadistic. Which is why it was canceled in favor of making Duel Monsters, where they made him a toned down version of his manga self, but with less of the psyche-breaking and more of a straight beat-down.

The Yu-Gi-Oh season 0 Manga is very good, I highly recommend it. I actually wish the whole series would have stuck closer to that storyline instead of just mainly becoming about duel monsters.

DarkGonk00 You're right. It would have just stayed what Season 0 is, which is sort of like a horror cult classic. It has a few very dedicated fans but never would have made it big and I bet it would have ended earlier. Popularity wise, the card game was the best thing for it.

I think I've heard more than one person say that the Season 0 manga felt like something Neil Gaiman would write. It's dark and often gritty, but there's also a surreal... whimsy to it. People get maimed and killed and driven to insanity, and in a lot of cases it's played for laughs or just plain forgotten about. A fine line between horror and comedy.

I mean I've read a few chapters of the manga once in Shonen Jump a few years ago, but I didn't know that Yami/Yugi actually killed people Saw Style... O.o Suddenly the episode where Yami almost kills Kaiba on Duelist Island makes a lot more sense.

Yeah... It was a really neat idea, doing sick and twisted games to punish people, often excessively, and often ironically. In the first chapter of the manga, the shadow game with the bike riding duelist cop was different than the anime, you put a stack of bills on top of your hand, and you stab them with a knife, and you keep what you stab.

The manga is pretty hardcore. I think reading it as a kid is why I'm so used to excessive violence in films. Yami Yugi (or Dark Yugi) is practically a psycho in the original manga. He: renders a director blind, sets the criminal from this episode on fire (in the anime its an illusion but in the manga he does actually kill him), blows up one of his classmates in a game of air hockey, causes a shopkeeper to be stung by a scorpion, traps Kaiba in an illusion where he "experiences death" (which causes Kaiba to become a psycho villain), electrocutes a bunch of gang members, nearly kills Shadi with a bunch of traps in his mind, sets a bunch of gang members on fire (although they seemingly survive as they jump into the ocean), poisons Mokuba, mind crushes Kaiba (which in the manga puts him into a coma), seemingly murders a Monster Fighter player (its a bit unclear as to whether Yami knocked him out or actually killed him), has a classmate have his soul devoured by dragon spirits and puts a group of gang members in the hospital by dropping them from a roof. Yami Yugi was practically a villain in the manga. Kaiba was actually crazy, since he puts Yugi and his friends through a theme park of death "Death-T" where they faced assassins and mercenaries in a shoot-out, rode in an electric chair ride, nearly had their hands cut off by a guillotine, Jonounchi (Joey) had to fight a serial killer and then burned him alive to survive, faced a room with large falling blocks and Kaiba puts Grandpa in the hospital by torturing him with a solid vision experience that can kill a person if they're exposed to it for enough time. The manga was no afraid to be violent at all. If anything, it relished in the violence.
