The entire debate about Kimba and the Lion King reminds me of something that, I believe, a comedian once said and which stuck with me: "If you change the story, change the characters, change the setting, change the characters' motivations and maybe add a musical number or two, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is *EXACTLY* the same as Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. Coincidence? "

Hi, welcome to ViewJojo.com, where we’ll be discussing all the reasons Nickelodeon’s Jimmy Neutron ripped off Cartoon Network’s Dexter’s Lab. For starters, both characters are white, which feels like more than a just coincidence. Why would Nickelodeon go out of their way to make Jimmy have the exact same skin color as Dexter? Second, both of Jimmy’s parents are incredibly stupid and unaware of Jimmy’s lab, we haven’t actually watched the show so we’re just assuming this is the case, but still, why would Nickelodeon shamelessly steal ideas like this? Lastly, both of Jimmy’s friends share a very similar role to Deedee from Dexter, with Carl being stupid and Sheen being annoying, and Deedee being both. And once again, both Deedee and Jimmy’s friends are humans, who share very similar roles. Anyways, that’s all for today, thank you for watching today’s video, be sure to like and subscribe for more god awful content we don’t do our research on.

Dude, Spider-man totally ripped off Batman. Both of them being male could be coincidence, both of them having an animal involved in their secret identities is damning, but if you look through the comics there's so many shots where Spider-man is in the city, EXACTLY like how Batman is in the city. HMMM, SUSPICIOUS.
@sonicbelmont3004 жыл бұрын
@@tiablue9106 while I agree that it's a huge leap to call it a rip off, the designs of the sisters are strikingly similar to Dexter. Johnny on his own is hard to draw a comparison to, but next to his sisters the blonde hair and blue eyes are easy enough to draw a very thin line between. And then if I wanted to be obtuse I could say Bling Bling and Mandark are both villains with bowl cuts. But in pretty much every single aspect, the shows couldn't be more different. The main one being that Dexter's Lab is actually, ya know, not a piece of shit.

"there's black trim on his ears" all lions have black trim on their ears that's why both of them put it there!!! oh my god that's the most hilarious reach of this debacle and that's saying a lot. i'm so strongly reminded of people who think that the only way artists can come up with an interesting idea or interpretation is via drugs or theft, like that's the /only way/ creativity could possibly happen
@JenamDrag0n2 жыл бұрын
I think it's probably because those people are not artists themselves. I bring a notebook to write fiction stories during my work breaks, and I ended up having a conversation with a coworker about it, and she was amazed at how I was able to just... create stuff all the time out of nothing. That I could just have an idea and transcribe it into something tangible and hopefully compelling. Completely blew her mind when I tried explaining that the characters often take a life of their own and write the story for me if I'm in the right zone. Non-artist brains can't do that, so maybe drugs or theft really do seem like the most viable ways to create things to some people.

Only a third of the way in, but that absolutist view which Adam is arguing against shows that too many people think there is simply a dichotomy - either Disney stole from Kimba, or they were inspired by it. It leaves no room for the possibility of coincidence, as it laughs at the idea of coincidence being impossible - "the chances that one of the main characters' friends is a bird are so low that it cannot _possibly_ be coincidence!" That kind of statement is ignoring so many factors - Kimba the White Lion had dozens upon dozens of side characters, the character of Kimba was friends with almost every animal at some point, birds are pretty damn common... I'm glad this is the issue Adam tackles head-on.

Watch how Saberspark literally invents the "they wanted to sue but were scared of evil Disney layers" accusation out of thin air btw. Ignoring that this is decades earlier when Disney was quite different from what they are today. You know what annoys me? I get the feeling the Kimba girl who spread a lot of the false information is not a Tezuka fan. She’s a KIMBA fan, but has no interest or feelings towards any of Tezuka’s other work or even him as a person. Which is why the whole “the 1997 film should have come out earlier” thing to her has to be tied to Disney being evil with The Lion King, and not tied to the fact that Tezuka Productions/Mushi films might have had to go through some difficulties after their founder and one of the most important creators in manga and anime DIED. Because it’s not about Tezuka for her. Tezuka is irrelevant. It’s all about Kimba and TLK and that’s it. Maybe I’m reading too deep into it, but I find her way of talking about the 1997 movie as some sort of conspiracy on Disney’s part really insulting in retrospect. Also I get the impression she has little to nothing to say about Tezuka that doesn’t have anything to do with Kimba.

I just want to say thank you for making these. I stuck around for the Lion King promo/director's commentary cringe, but this whole Kimba situation really opened my eyes. I also used to be under the assumption "OF COURSE Lion King ripped off Kimba, everyone can see it". I think even after Adam uploads his 30 minute-ish Kimba video many people will still tell him he's wrong and biased. Whatever he'll say in that video, I feel like it wouldn't be that clear to me if I hadn't watched literally HOURS of him showing clips highlighting how different the characters are and how 3000 minutes of Kimba have exhausted pretty much all options you can do with an animal story set in Africa.

19:58 ahh, yes. Kimba invented the dead parent trope. Its just used in like 90% of all fiction where the main character is a child/teenager. Lets be real here, there are just so many ways to get your underaged main character to get to the point of "call to action". Dead parents/ destroyed village or abduction are just the most logical way to give your young character any agency (or the most obvious one for the fantasy genre would be sudden and rare magical abilities). He/she has to be suddenly on their own, because otherwise there isnt really any justification why a literal child should go on a dangerous journey when there are more capable adult characters around.

Adum: opens mouth* 1997: sighs
@leolebeau72324 жыл бұрын
I was hoping that Adum would go over Saberspark's and Shinobi's videos. Shinobi's videos are greato, and he was (until now) the only commentator who presented the two sides fairly and pointed out the bullshit that a lot of people who cried "rip-off" used as arguments. I can't recommend his videos on this controversy enough. Saberspark, tho, while was one of the few big-name commentators that I saw who watched it and had a more fair presentation of how Kimba is different from TLK and recommended that people watch it, he didn't challenge the "rip-off" crowd, which was a little disappointing to me. "STOP USING CLIPS FROM THE 1997 MOVIE" is my new motto from now on, thanks Adum Edit: 44:06 - Just some fun facts brought to you by a Tezuka nerd: Tezuka liked to draw women transforming into animals and vice versa. The most famous example is in Senya Ichiya Monogatari (known to be one of the first erotic animations) where the main character Aladdin (Yeah, I'd love to see someone try to argue that Disney also ripped this off lmao) is stranded in a island full of beautiful women - but they are actually snakes who eat men after sleeping with them. It isn't a female-characters-only thing and it isn't always in an erotic context (see Princess Knight, Vampires and Ode to Kirihito), but... saying that he liked drawing women transforming into animals is an understatement. And I'm not even gonna mention the interspecies romances (usually involving aliens, mind you) that some of his mangas have. Just make of that you will, but I definitely think he might have been a furry. And I'm totally cool with that.

“Until now”? Did Shinobi do something
@leolebeau72324 жыл бұрын
@@catendway4754 I meant that Shinobi was pretty much the ONLY commentator that I saw who gave further context on the Kimba series and adaptations and called out the misinformation that people spread, UNTIL NOW because Adum is also doing the same - and since Adum has a much bigger audience than Shinobi, now hopefully more people can realize how manipulative the rip-off crowd were when selling their ideas (Hopefully you get the point I'm trying to make here, english isn't my first language e.e'')

I mean, would Tolkiens family take Rowling to court because dementors are copying ringwraiths? The main character having invisibility? Sauron losing his power, and being tied to a magical mcguffin to stay bound to the world, rings or horcrux? They couldn't, and that's 90% more similarity than any example they have haha I mean I have zero attachment to lion king, I couldn't care less But the kimba people seem insanely manipulative, especially always using the 97 clips, and there's been zero viable evidence, totally with Adam on this one, it's like saying Terminator ripped off the brave little toaster These videos are as stupid as flat earthers haha, just retarded things twisted into points that youd only believe if you had complete ignorance of the subject

One part of this that is very rarely brought up is that we're talking about the EARLY 90s where the best you got in terms of access to ANY series was on TV or something like VHS (DVD as a format would be invented 1995). From a briefer search, it looks like any official dub releases happened after the Lion King and what was released before that wasn't near the whole original series which was the only one with an English dub pre-1994 (not to mention it went through three different English dubs before that and story does get altered when localizing to a different audience (See the dub of Ghost Stories for a work of art, it's hilarious)). So I think we lose grasp HARD on how much less accessible literally all information and media was. We can watch literally anything at any time entirely available where websites actually check in on whether you intend to continue watching that it doesn't occur to anyone that even if Kimba was airing, how likely was it that it landed on those individual episodes, that it was watched, and that influence was strong enough to make it? Alternatively, it was the very few episodes that are compared to Kimba were the most aired or even among the few that were in the VHS releases pre-1994. That'd be interesting if the original series clips correlated heavily with the episodes of the show that made it to an English VHS release. Then it's also possible it could be working on a subliminal level (maybe comparable to when you remembered Gooey Gus and had to check if it actually existed, it could've been "oh there was a show where there was a warthog or something that smelled bad? Idk" but also I mean... a warthog = a pig in most minds and pigs are commonly associated with being dirty and smelly so even that is down to a trope.

While I won't post their username, the channel with the "comparison" video with the distinctive Japanese sentence in the name has gone full lock down, and disabled comments on ALL of their videos on their channel; even the ones that aren't Kimba related. Seems like making a safe space to "block out the hate" is more important than owning up to years of lies and exaggerations for kudos and to promote your favorite anime.
