ME TOO! THAT'S HOW I FIRST KNEW ABOUT KIMBA. I remember my dad catching me watching that cuz my sister and I watched those VHS all the time and he was all "oh Kimba! Yeah it was like the original Lion King back in the day", which was important to us because we GREW UP on Lion King. Years later he got us a crappy dvd from a bargain bin that had the Canadian dub on it which is just around the same time my sister started actually using the web and that's how we got into Jungle Emperor and knew all abt it's controversy. Ah memories.... 🥲I think I got off topic... Abt that trailer- I think even at 4 I could tell the show was trying to bank off the Lion King but I still wanted to see it cuz I loved animal stuff and I loved Lion King. For anyone curious, the remake series really is the best Kimba property 9/10!

A little off topic, but at 3:05 I read a comment saying "Well Disney is known for its racism." Uhh... Is that your way of defending Kimba? 1. Disney is not the only studio to do racist caricatures. That's a fault of EVERY early 20th-century studio at some point. And Disney's were pretty tame in comparison to Warner and MGM's. 2. Disney's racism does not make Kimba's any better.

When I was a kid, we didn’t have regular TV. We had a service called “Sky Angel” that played almost exclusively Christian programming. Kimba was one of the only shows I ever enjoyed watching. Almost everything else was terrible low-budget random Sunday school bullshit made for toddlers. Kimba and Superbook were the only legitimate cartoons they ever played. It should also be noted that I didn’t understand why blackface was wrong until way too late in my life.

Like it's just a way to signify that a character is sneaky or light on their feet, so the grunts initially think it's a log flying at them and not a person/lion? Or maybe it's a superpower that ninjas are assumed to have. Kind of like how vampires hate garlic. It's just a rule that nobody questions.

The '67 sequel was the only Kimba adaptation I didn't watch as a kid because I didn't understand English very well back then... and boy, once I sat down to watch years later, I couldn't finish because the dub was awful. The manga was better folks, at least the themes and story were consistent there. (And even the '89 had a consistent dark tone tbh, it was my favourite as a kid even though I only found the series in Japanese) Can't wait for when Adum's video comes out and the batshit insane moments of the 60s series are showcased lmao

I was gonna say that maybe it coulda been excusable at some degree, but the racist caricature character (and the woman in the same episode) are the only ones ever drawn to this extreme. Meaning it was an artistic deliberate choice and not a blind depiction of the times.
