Of course there are exceptions to this rule (the trend setters, robin williams in Aladdin and later the main cast of Shrek. Jack Black can be a good one too if he has the right direction), but most of the time the performances are either half-assed like Beyonce here, or the people they hired just aren't well versed in voice acting

3:34-3:49 It's worse when, later on in the remake where Mufasa is about to scold Simba for going to the Elephant Graveyard, they borrowed a line from the Broadway musical: "I remember a cub, a certain headstrong cub, who was always getting into scrapes, and he showed he had a lot more prominence. Did he not, sire?" *(One of my favorite added lines from the musical)* And while the musical uses that to further illustrate Mufasa and Zazu's friendship, Mufasa in the remake just ignores that. Has Adam read the production info of Lion King '94 that they released for publicity on the Buena Vista WWW website prior to the film's release? I think he would get a kick out of how they talk about expressions being important to the emotional connection for the characters of the film. Here's an excerpt with the supervising animator of Scar talking about it: *"Working primarily with four-legged animals also proved challenging to the animators in terms of gesturing and attitudes. According to Andreas Deja, Scar's supervising animator, "When I first began to animate this character, I remember thinking, 'How am I going to get all this humanized personality into this character without hands. Hands are so important to expressing a character's emotions. Finally, I learned to concentrate on the overall body attitude -- the angle of the head and the facial expressions. Sometimes, very subtle things like raising an eyebrow let you show what the character is thinking. You have fewer things to work with but I think it can be as powerful in the end if you really understand the scene and get the acting right."* *In the case of Scar, Deja used the character's walk to express personality. "His walk is totally different from the other lions. He's usually lower to the ground because he's sneakier. He has more of a gliding walk, kind of slick and elegant, while the others are much more powerful and heavy."* and: *""People sometimes ask, 'don't you get bored doing all those drawings?' and the thing of it is that we don't think about drawing, we think about acting," continues Deja. "My job is to figure out who this character is and what he's going through emotionally at any given point. **_You have to know what his likes and dislikes are and how he feels about himself and the other characters._** Jeremy does the voice, but the performance and how he would move and act is really up to me. I have to come up with that performance that you see up there on the screen."* LOL. There's other stuff about the production of the original there which could be of interest like Scar's design taking cues from Jeremy Iron's real face and hair which makes the fact that they obviously lifted some of Scar's design for the 2019 remake a bit weird, Zimmer talking about his process of composing the soundtrack, and about the thought on the emotion and character of each actor given to the characters in the planning phase being evident. Not sure how to forward it to him but it's funny that someone working on the original production not only corroborates his criticisms but also serves itself as a criticism for the 2019 remake. For reference, here are the highest grossing animated films of all time since the summer of 1994: "The Lion King" 1994-2003 (750+ mil) "Finding Nemo" 2003-2004 (850+ mil) "Shrek 2" 2004-2010 (900+ mil) "Toy Story 3" 2010-2013 (1.05+ bil) "Frozen" 2013-2019 (1.2+ bil) "The Lion King (2019)" 2019- (1.6+ bil) So, while this horrid film did make an obscene amount of money, at least the original is still the highest grossing 2-D animated film, by a wide margin.

I think the reason why they didn’t bring Jeremy Irons is because they wanted to incorporate as many black celebrities as they can for woke points. This is Disney after all. Yeah, they did hire Seth Rogen and Bill Eichner, but their roles are not as prominent as Scar. Chiwetel Ejiofor is a good actor, but he doesn’t have the presence that Jeremy Irons had in the original. Jeremy Irons could still play him just fine, but Chiwetel Ejifore doesn’t carry that same charisma that Jeremy brought. It might be for political points, it might be because Chiwetel was more popular than Jeremy nowadays. I don’t know really. You were spot on when you said that Scar would be just some lion in your Aladdin 2019 YMS. It boggles my mind that this is the highest grossing ‘animated’ movie of all time.
@QueenAvacado4 жыл бұрын
They literally gave 2019 scar the same lines as the 1994 scar and it just doesn’t work. Because the 1994 scar is much more dramatic and sadistic and all of his lines were literally written for Jeremy irons. So his character in 2019 doesn’t work at all because you’ve got lines that 1994 scar said that were literally written for a completely different actor.
@ivancorredera42414 жыл бұрын
Phineas Facing Forward I just checked. The lion king 2019 has grossed over $1.6 billion, more than Frozen and its sequel, making it the the highest grossing animated movie ever and the 7th highest grossing movie of all time. It’s honestly very baffling and annoying how much money it has grossed over any other animated movie in history; even more than Frozen somehow.
@ivancorredera42414 жыл бұрын
Kelsey Mullett actually, the lines aren’t exactly the same. There were some changes made to the new script that really took away from the uniqueness of the original Scar. His characterization is far more obvious as he’s less jovial and maniacal here, leading to a way less impactful performance.

Disney animated musicals have always had such impeccable vocalists, for everything from flawless pitch to emotional performance. The sloppiness of their modern remakes is a looooot more damning than I think they even realize. Ariel was everything I wanted to be in a singer when I was a kid, I studied her intonation when I listened to the soundtrack, and I can't imagine a music-obsessed kid with perfect ear pitch listening to any song from the new Aladdin or Lion King and thinking the same.

More like Grandpa Mufasa. Cue Christopher Sugi: "Graaaaandpa! Graaaaandpa!" Fun fact: John Favreau scratching his ear at 42:54 was an agreed upon signal for interviewers to abort questions or redirect the conversation. Tugging hard on his ear was a sign that the question was extremely "improper" and the interviewer had to act fast or expect to be removed. I'd say there is a chance the guy won't be invited back. And why would anyone give a fuck about the music? Why would Hans Zimmer have any interest in revisiting something he completed over 20 years ago? He's got so much new stuff lined up, I'm sure. Why would any of the singers and "singers" have any interest in covering songs that had already been performed perfectly and recorded? Clearly this is what you get when the only motiviation is money.
