Star Wars has a laserdisc release in 1993 that did not change the copyright on the packaging to the correct year of manufacturing, it still say 1992 from the first time it was released, only on the discs did they mark the correct year of manufacturing. So I would say that your hunch of it being a typo especially In the 90’s is very plausible since many typos of that kind occurred during that period in films and tv release. Also the way it fades to an all black screen with different compression on it is a dead give away it was added later, almost like they initially forgot the copyright on it. I’m sure you could find that trailer without that copyright at the end.

Following YMS' Lion King Saga is so fascinating. The finished videos will probably end up being some of my favorite content of all time.
@IW-ow9cp4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's completely illogical that this level of animation would be completed before the film goes on a 10 year hiatus. Unlike Live-action, which can release a trailer then reshoot the whole movie in a fairly short time frame, when the actual animation process starts, it's usually a good sign that the film is nearing completion. If you look at the first trailers for Disney animated films of the 90's, including "The Lion King," they will just be starting or midway through the animation process, so the trailer will show mostly storyboards, behind the scenes footage, and even interviews. The closest an animated film has come to that kind of hell is Richard Williams' "The Thief and the Cobbler," which was in production hell for about thirty years, from 1964 to the 90's. Appearantly at one point in the 70's, he made 3 hours of animation, but no trailer had been made, and then he had a fallout with the producers who kept the footage, so he had to start again from scratch. If the 97 movie had this much completed animation in 87, something must have really thrown off post-production, or the film would have needed to be re-animated. But a lot of the footage shown is clearly final.
@JFTC7092 жыл бұрын
Also the animation is clearly mid/late 90s animation and not mid/late 80s animation. Just based on how it looks I would say it's overwhelmingly unlikely that it was produced in '87.

Another thing about it is if the copyright date on the trailer was right, that would be really inefficient and be really expensive to release a trailer for a film that gets shelved for 10 years. Trailers usually publish to a cut of the film that is months close to release, teasers about a year. To have a trailer hit when the film won't release 10 years later just doesn't functionally and financially make any sense.

I thought tracing renassiance art to the correct artist. No signatures, and sometimes not even a commission sheet to reference, was next to impossible. But oddly trying to uncover production of an animated movie from the 90s is proving just as difficult.
@TheSLATEcleaner4 жыл бұрын
Disclaimer: years are talking about release, assume involvement is leading up to that year The director of Jungle Emperor Leo, Yoshio Takeuchi, narrows the production schedule considerably. More importantly, he was *also the screenwriter* for Jungle Emperor Leo, meaning he was absolutely critical for all stages of the production process. He directed 2001 Ya Monogatari, an OVA that released in June 1987, with a bunch of other work prior to that that makes it unlikely for him to have been working on JEL during the period prior to it. Then his output slows, with two works under his directing credit coming out between 2001 Ya Monogatari and Jungle King Leo - a short in 1993 and a full movie in 1996. He did the screenplay for works in 1990 and 1988, and was an animation director for Akira (yes, that Akira) in 1988. He would've been super busy in 1987, but using the power of inference we can assume (somewhat safely) his work in Akira (along with his earlier work directing episodes for The Rose of Versailles and Space Cobra) is what got him the job, since otherwise his catalog leading up to that point was mostly less well-received work. Here's my best educated guess. If you combine this information with what we can glean from the release history of Tezuka Productions, you can get a good picture of what was going on in their studio during the development of this film. Tezuka Productions doesn't typically have more than one series per year. Additionally, there's a glaring five year gap between the 1991-92 run of the Dear Brother anime and the 1997 releases of Jungle Emperor Leo and Bible Stories. Yoshio Takeuchi is coming off his first movie in 1987 and [as we can infer from his total disinterest in episode directing between 1986 (Honeybee in Toycomland for TMS) and 2002 (Beyblade)] is looking to direct again. He works in the animation department for Akira while trying to find another production company willing to put him in the director's chair (he notably works for a ton of different companies during this period). Sometime between 1988 and 1991 most likely, this gets the attention of Tezuka Productions, who've been wanting to release a film version of Kimba. They bring him on to start working on the screenplay. It's likely this is why there's a big gap in time for the studio and Takeuchi here. He has to find a way to adapt a 52 episode anime and the older three volume manga series it's based on into an hour-and-a-half. He's got a bigger budget than he's accustomed to and, with the death of Tezuka himself, a ton of pressure to get it right. In parallel, Disney is in production for the Lion King. Development begins in 1988. The Lion King goes into actual production in 1991 alongside Pocahontas. Names start getting attached. Word spreads. The Lion King is looking at a 1993 release date. Tezuka Productions might have been looking at a 1993 release date for Jungle Emperor Leo, but then they panic because they're going to being going head-to-head with The Mouse with lion movies when they're smaller. So they delay. Unfortunately for them, The Lion King gets delayed by rewrites. The Lion King finally releases in mid 1994. It's a massive success. Tezuka Productions is then in the awkward position of having a movie that's going to be completely ignored because "the greatest animated movie of all time also centered around lions" just came out. So they wait it out. Maybe they have some rewrites, but probably they don't since Yoshiro Takeuchi directs a full-length movie that comes out in 1996, meaning he would've been working on it in 1995 if not 1994. The Lion King doesn't just do well in theaters though, it crushes in home video too, becoming the best-selling VHS ever when it's released in March 1995. At this point, Tezuka Productions have been sitting on Jungle Emperor Leo for probably 3 years. They've moved on in production - Bible Stories comes out in '97, so we know it was being worked on in '96 if not also '95. They're just biding their time for Disney to quiet down a little to release JEL, which they get an opportunity to do when Hercules comparatively stumbles in 1997. TL,DR; Using Yoshio Takeuchi and Tezuka Productions' release history, it appears primary production for Jungle Emperor Leo took place between 1991 and 1995, with development beginning in 1989 or 1990 in conjunction with the Tezuka Kimba animated series. Takeuchi's work on the screenplay means it couldn't have started development until after 1988 and the short film he was working on meant he wasn't working on JEL exclusively during 1993. Tezuka Production was busy animating Dear Brother in 1990-91, and were likely planning to focus more on JEL once that run was finished. Then The Lion King goes into production in 1991, throwing a huge wrench into things. They aren't ready or otherwise willing to release in 93/early 94, so they decide to wait out The Lion King to see if they need to do any altering of their own film. The Lion King gets huge and delays them further since they know JEL will do terribly if they release it in the newly-saturated talking lion animated feature market, meanwhile Takeuchi has either moved on or does some work with rewrites then moves on and starts work on his next directorial project through 1995 for an eventual 1996 release. This is all guess work, but it's the best I can figure things with the sources available.

I cannot believe the lengths these people went to justify their hatred for The Lion King. I'm still mad at myself for trusting the word of that one lady, since she was a respected, long-time participant in another fandom. I just took her word for it, and that was foolish of me.

There was a time when I first heard about this controversy and doubted my love for Lion King as it's my all time favorite movie. But eventually, I realized it was all just coincidences rather than ripoff. The further Adam's research for all this goes, the further I begin to see how ignorant these "sources" who claim that Lion King ripped off Kimba are, even to the point of actually not seeing Kimba.

If that copyright date is correct then the movie would have to be completely finished in 1987 but only got distributed a decade later, even though there was a Kimba show that debuted in 1989. Scripts have copyrights, but those are different from movie copyrights which is what production companies are far more concerned with. So unless there is any other reason to believe otherwise, this should be treated as a typo.

25:21 Has this source been shown on stream yet? Because the only time I ever heard that this would be the case was because that's why Disney's execs withheld release for the movie for a while, with lawsuits and stuff, because they thought it was a rip-off of Lion King. I think everyone thought that was just ignorant higher-ups at Disney who didn't know any better. Now that might be true??? I'd love to see the source on this.

Before watching Adam’s streams, I was under the belief that Kimba inspired The Lion King, however, I always assumed that the Jungle Emperor Leo feature film was attempting to piggy back off Disney’s success.
@randomfox122454 жыл бұрын
I mean, if it wasn't for the neurotic conspiracy around Kimba that exists purely because of a bunch of people just straight up lying, I would think the NATURAL ASSUMPTION anyone would come to is that '97 Kimba movie was made in an effort to capitalize on the Lion King. Like, obviously. But instead the conspiracy goes on. I'm really looking forward to when his video is finally done, because literally all you ever see anywhere online where Kimba is even passingly mention, you just see people spouting the same shit and it has always driven me up the wall.
