The craziest thing to me was the line after, something like "Aw shucks, too bad the elephants were so bad, otherwise they didn't have to be exterminated." Like... You better do what you're told or your species will literally be genocided! Making this the moral of the story, being said by a character who literally made it his life's mission to make all the animals get along is kinda creeping me out. Sheesh, Kimba. Not to mention that this one part talking about how Africa is awakening and needs to be civilised makes it clear that all this is an allegory for Africa after colonialism, in the process of forming nation states and "civilising themselves". And, in keeping with the allegory, if they don't behave, the stronger animals (humans/former colonisers) will just have to kill everybody. I mean, Adum deliberately chose to focus mostly on some of the craziest and most disturbing aspects of Kimba, and he relied exclusively on the crappy English dub that strays considerably from the original dialogues and adds tons of offensive connotations totally absent from the original dub. He also failed to mention the fact that animator Tom Sito openly admitted in 2015 that at some point, they had a copy of the Kimba manga in the studio and that they read it while they were still working on TLK. And finally, Adum glossed over the fact that in spite of their official statements and stance, Macoto Tezuka, Takayuki Matsutani, and Yoshihiro Shimizu all greenlit the production of a Jungle Emperor movie and short movie that both deliberately copy some elements from TLK, in order to get back at Disney without raising a stink about it (a typically Japanese attitude). I don't blame him, though. He just used exactly the same methods as the ones used by the people who made all those misleading and dishonest comparative videos and articles. In other words, he simply gave them a taste of their own medicine. Which is only fair, I guess...

Whether or not someone else did it first, if he intentionally spread misleading information, it's just as wrong as saying the Lion King plagerized Kimba. Now I'm not saying he did it on purpose. I'm sure he didn't as he only had the American dub to work with, but on the chance he did it's still wrong because it's unprofessional, and hurts his credibility as a creator. Not to mention that would be incredibly petty and unfair to fans of the Kimba series who did nothing to spread the misinformation. (A lot of us hated that rumor too! we said the people who spread it absolutely didn't watch the show but rumor spreaders wouldn't listen.) And let me say Kimba fans are getting an unfair backlash as a result of this video. I'm in a server for the series that shortly after this release, got raided and users attacked on other platforms quite a few times for enjoying the show, calling us racist for the blackface element when that part was only in the 66 sequel series and manga, that we all acknowledge as an unfortunate part that aged terribly and has nothing to do with what we like about the series as a whole. Is that fair? And here's another part he left out, Tezuka didn't know blackface was racist. He watched old cartoons with it and as a Japanese man in the 50s writing Kimba, had no idea the awful context behind it. But when he found out why it was wrong he apologized, never drew it again, even redrew parts to omit it for later editions of some of his manga. But there are people now who don't know that and assume he was racist when he truly cared about equality. If people read his manga they'd discover he wrote plenty about equality and peace messages that was far ahead of their time as works before the 80s and 90s when those themes became common. Its just liked making exaggerated characters (he even exaggerated a caricature of himself) and was ignorant of the context behind this one bad thing. (Is it fair to tarnish the legacy of a dead man who can't defend himself now? I'd call it a LOT worse than people thinking Disney only ripped off his work.) So, on the chance this was intentional I can't call this video fair. I'll say again I like the video and am glad it killed the rumor. But, no I can't call it fair.

For years, they have been insulted and accused of supporting a corrupt company, by people who know zilch about Tezuka and Kimba. Personally, I've been ridiculed and called all the names under the sun by people on both sides, simply because I love both properties equally (as you can tell from my profile picture). Yes, it's unfair, petty, childish, and it accomplishes nothing as it only adds fuel to the fire, but what goes around comes around... It was likely because as Adam said there's over 3000 minutes footage of Kimba materials to cover and unfortunately as the saying goes, it takes 2 minute to tell a lie while it takes an hour or 2 to debunk them. Even more annoying when the comparison videos cherry picked using the Kimba 1997 film, which came out 3 years after the Lion King and people still on board that Disney ripped off Kimba.

It makes perfect sense that this has gone on as long as it has. They're two things with a similar name and that's about as far as the average person will ever look into it. Beyond that, you have to be Really invested in this - to a degree that very few people have ever been - to actually justify watching a 52 episode children's cartoon because of it. Astro Boy is way more palatable as far as Tezuka's works go for me as an adult because I have some nostalgia from watching it as a kid, but I know for a fact I wouldn't be able to get more than twenty minutes into that unless I was showing it to children or someone else in the target audience. It's way worse without the benefit of nostalgia.

It looks like the law professor's images are actually screenshots taken from the "Scar himself looks like foreign, weak, and with very female moves" video, which almost definitely got its images from the website through screenshots. All comparison images from the site's "Disney?" subpage are found in the video. That would explain the low resolution of the Ted Talk images. Just to be sure, I checked the original video and there is no list of sources. It's still possible that the professor's images were taken from the fansite. But if she did she probably would've cited the source and there's no way Adum would have let that slide without a single mention. I'm nitpicking, I know. The conversation is supposed to be about the law professor taking someone else's work while putting in minimal work on her part. I still think it's important that we keep all our facts straight. Leo is known as Leo in a lot of countries around the world, and the controversy happened in those countries, too. And back then, there was no internet or youtube with misleading comparative videos Heck, here in France lots of people started pointing out the similarities as soon as the movie came out in 1994, and it had nothing to do with the character's name. That being said, we just had a complete rerun of the 78 original episodes of "Le roi Leo" on French television between 1989 and 1990, on a very popular kids show. So, it was still fresh in people's minds, not like in the US where people said TLK reminded them of that old cartoon they used to watch in the 60s.

The only thing that stopped me believing in the lion king being plagiarism discussion was one scene someone showed had humans in it. That by itself made me realise something was wrong. Human existence in a story about animals, however you choose to represent them, will always heavy change and skew what the story is. It's unavoidable. So if Kimba had humans in it, there was no way it could be the same story. Turns out, yeah, that's one of the biggest things, Kimba is a story about a lion wanting to be more like humans (plus a lot of other weird stuff).

The "funny" thing is that it's exclusive to the American dub. In fact, most of Kimba's disturbing and/or offensive aspects shown in this video are only found in the old American dub of Kimba.

Firstly, when it comes to anime, most people will inevitably be only familiar with the English dub, so you can't exactly dismiss English dubs of anime as insignificant little edits of the original XD Like it or not, the English localization will have a massive impact on how people view it. And secondly, America didn't alter 1965's Jungle Emperor Leo to make it about an enlightened white lion raised by humans trying to civilize the savage animals of Africa. A few more blatantly colonialist lines added in the English dub don't add much to the issue. Or all the blackface and child abuse present in the second series, that was Japan's decision XD

Which is hardly surprising, given the poor treatment given to Japanese animation in the US (Sailor Moon, DBZ, Battle of the Planets, Knights of the Zodiac, Princess Mononoke, etc.). The story of Jungle Emperor is about a white lion king naively trying to "civilize" the animals living on his domain... and failing miserably. It also involves humans, mostly white settlers, who foolishly think they can "beat" and "tame" Africa... and fail miserably. That's the message conveyed in the original dub. That you should respect Mother Nature and all creatures. Onward, Leo! is also butchered in the American dub. Raiya, for example, never says in Japanese that Leo hitting his son is no big deal. In the original dub, she's mad at Leo and tears him a new one. In the original dub, the natives speak in normal, unaccented Japanese, whereas they speak in broken English in the US dub (same thing with Killer in DBZ: the Americans apparently found it hilarious and perfectly acceptable in the late 90s to have a black character talk gibberish). Besides, dated and offensive racial stereotypes due to sheer ignorance (the Japanese simply copying what they saw in Western productions because they didn't know any better in those days, having never seen someone from a different ethnicity in real life) doesn't make Kimba a "minstrel show", seeing as there is no malice and no deliberate intention of dehumanizing and mocking the natives... In both cases it's terribly offensive, but for different reasons...

Japanese animation has been popular in lots of countries around the world for a long time now, sometimes since the 70s especially in Europe. Not everybody commenting here is American or familiar with the English dub of Kimba. I personally watched Kimba in French first, then in German, then a bit in Italian and Spanish, then in English, and finally in Japanese. I was floored - and horrified - when I saw how different the US dub was, with tons of offensive stuff, altered dialogues, made up lines and whatnot that are either totally absent from the other foreign dubs (including the original Japanese one), or at least much more nuanced. I understand why Adum found Kimba highly offensive, and I would probably be offended too if my sole exposure to the old TV show from the 60s was the shitty American dub in which they say that white lions are inherently superior and therefore natural born leaders, that the elephants kind of deserved to be exterminated because they were mean, or that it's high time for the dark continent to abandon voodoo mask and silly superstitions and to finally embrace civilisation... But that was not my personal experience with Kimba.

Law Professors aren't really members of academia in the same way that other professors are. Law Schools are professional school, you don't learn how to conduct research outside of issues of law. Additionally, books don't really go through peer review in the same way that an article will. It's the responsibility of the author and their publisher to be responsible, and obviously no one except for a select group of furries know enough about Kimba to refute the part of her book that talks about Kimba and the Lion King. And yeah, don't cite Wikipedia. It's the sources in Wikipedia that you want to draw from. Your teachers weren't stupid for trying to make you do the right thing. I actually did watch a few Kimba episodes a while back because of the controversy. The Lion King is my favorite animated movie of all time (largely due to Scar) and being told that it was a blatant rip-off of an older anime just made me curious about what was apparently The Lion King in anime form. After watching a few episodes, it was clear that they weren’t anything alike. I did still try to watch it for its own merit, but it just wasn’t for me.

For me, I love Lion King and I know Disney is prone to taking influence from others, but I just kind of dismissed it because I’m gonna be honest the anime crowd resorts to plagiarism/ripoff allegations all the time. And they try to be possessive of genres in its entirety, especially sci-fi, or just think anime series/art exist in isolation. For example I’m a huge fan of Gerry Anderson and its a fact that Hideaki Anno took inspiration from him, something that i think a lot of weebs would be unwilling to recognise lest it tarnish their idea of anime as wholly unique.
