@NeverMindGaming Nope, that's not how it works. When you buy a movie, you're essentially paying for the right to view it yourself, or with family/friends in a home setting. A public screening is an exception, and generally requires a license or permission from the copyright holder. (With some exceptions on a case-to-case basis... ex. educational screenings and whatnot.) Given they arranged to have a premier for _Spring Breakers_ , it's probably safe to assume they are purchasing licenses for their screenings.

It's possible they did have a public viewing license (not sure what it's called in English). That isn't technically tied to the method you are showing the film but considering the other signs of incompetence by these people I wouldn't be surprised if they were not only pirating a movie, but also showing it in a public space. Rule of thumb: If your event involves playing movies on a computer and your event organizer doesn't have experience playing movies off a computer.... find someone who does. I'm honestly surprised they were able to figure out how to even torrent it.

I don't know much about the statute of limitations for copyright infringement, but I think it's 3 years, so if any studio tries to sue them after their showing of a movie they'll get off scot-free.

The swimclub when i was a kid was a pretty nice one, it had a heated pool and some times at night they would play a movie on a projector for us to watch with our families in the pool, a bunch of teens 12 years ago pulled this one off and i thought nothing of it. Judging by how botched this whole event was by the organizers I have a sinking feeling that the organizers never disclosed to the venue that they were going to setup all those hot tubs in there. Mostly the higher ups are really disconnected from what users actually want, as they just use it occasionally to test the new updates. From a brief glance its $40 for a ticket, $200 for a private hot tub, then I suppose the money from drinks goes to the bartenders that were outsourced (idk how catering works so no clue if the hot tub company would get a cut of the money but it seems highly unlikely), they torrented the movie (even so, at most it probably would cost was $20), nonetheless no matter the experience they earned a decent amount from the event and they're supposedly a fairly big, successful company, I hope the first floor business and the venue get a good chunk of money from them so that they can repair the damage

@@lukaszspychaj9210 well if they drain and clean the hot tubs after every showing, have a decently built larger venue with plenty of drains and water right seals around electrical areas, and actually delivers on promises like poolside ordering then nothing. One of the biggest issues with a venue like this would be 1. Cleanliness and the prevention of spreading STD/STIs via pissing(or potentially more depending on how badly the night goes. Broken glass spilling blood into the pool, 50 shades or Magic Mike playing…)2. Water damage on the venue either directly or through increased humidity and 3. Potential hazards via all the water. Tripping, rashes, any number of issues I’m sure OSHA would want to speak to you about. Though if you can manage to bring those issues down to a manageable degree or even eliminate them, then I think it could work.. but in a realistic scenario no. For your backyard with friends? Yeah! For a public commercial venue…. Eh

I wonder if the studio that made anchorman or who owns the rights could sue the company? I wonder if they’ve been using pirated copies at every one of their events or the “franchise” staging this event were just too incompetent or had zero fucks to give.

@@brantisonfire They definitely can. Selling a single stolen copy is highly illegal let alone having a live fucking event. Someone I know was caught pirating 2 movies and was sent a 2 million dollar bill in the mail.
