The absolute best part of that "wont go speechless" shit is that right after that song she gets her mouth covered with magic and is complete useless for the finale. A, making her speechless and B, reducing her role in defeating Jafar , unlike in the original where Jasmine was an important part of distracting him. Disney really do not understand strong female characters.

Yeah definitely sounds like the same mentality that thought "Belle should also be an inventor" and have her invent a washing machine. Also in Lion King 2019's case where they straighten and dull down the personalities of the female characters compared to the male characters, despite Jon trying to put cinematic emphasis on them. The hyenas are the most noticeable.

Jasmine is literally the most privileged person in the city. All the luxury, none of the responsibility. But in the original animated film, she was sympathetic -- her desire to get out of the gilded cage and actually see the outside world was understandable and valid. She was trapped and repressed and the film was smart enough to understand that this was still a sympathetic motive regardless of how rich she was. When they try in the remake to do this "empowerment" thing and make her upset that she wont be sultan... it makes her far less sympathetic. Oh no, her life of luxury wont also translate into government power? It just seems to me a misstep that takes away something from the character and makes her seem less heroic. From understandable spiritual needs that a gilded cage cannot satisfy, and ignorance of the world that is not her fault since she had no cause to know, it becomes about desire for power to complement the luxury?

Simba and Nala spent their whole lives bickering, were happy to see each other for a few seconds after being separated for a long time, then went right back to bickering. They slept close to each other for a night, then Nala left only for Simba to catch up to her, making them coming back to pride rock together a complete coincidence. That's the empowering partnership according to Jon.

The second Nala reunited with Simba, she tells him they need to leave, unlike the original where she's gathering all her thoughts which is, funny enough in a film about talking animals, the more realistic reaction to seeing an old friend again after all these years.

He played a clever trick on him by making him demand more and more power from the Genie and not realizing the implications of making himself into a Genie. Not to mention Jasmine was literally not some helpless woman in the original. She constantly talked back to her father and reprimanded him for forcing her to comply with an outdated law. She didn’t want a man who would make her be a servant like Jafar would, and she only warmed up to Aladdin because he promised her more than what she had, and appealed to her dream of seeing the world.

The " Lions! Attack!" line made me cringe so hard, it's similar to something you'd hear in a saturday morning cartoon like "Kids Next Door! Battle Stations!" or "Titan's! Go!" but without the charismatic energy of those examples.

@@michaelstrong5383 I imagine that's because Key and Peele were allowed to riff together for Toy Story 4, meaning their dialogue felt natural. They did the same thing in "Storks" and they're honestly the best part of that movie for similar reasons. I know it can be genuinely difficult to get voice actors to record together due to conflicting schedules or the actors being in different locations when recording, but a solid director will often deliver the other lines in a convincing way so the actors will respond convincingly (especially in a scene with a lot of back and forth), or at least provide solid direction about what the situation is about. I have honestly never seen a movie where it has been SO obvious that the actors were recording separately, because none of the lines flow like a real conversation. EDIT: I have literally just found out that Key and Andre recorded together for some scenes, which makes this somehow even more baffling.

I never understood the claim of racism with the hyenas in the original. No matter how you look at it, that makes no sense. Whoopi Goldberg and Cheech Marin were just doing their voices. Cheech wasn't going, "Yo, wassuh ese!" Also, Ed was voiced by Jim Cummings, the main villain was voiced by Jeremy Irons, and Mufasa, Sarabi, Rafiki, and Young Nala were all voiced by black actors. This specific highlight just shows how much Jon Favreau did not understand the original Lion King whatsoever. He is claiming that this story is not just about Simba but about a partnership and that with Beyonce in the role as Nala, she was able to bring that to the table. That is complete bullsh*t. This story is a coming-of-age story and it's supposed to be Simba's story, hence why it's called THE LION KING. The fight with Scar is Simba's fight. Nala is not meant to be a character who overtakes Simba's role in the film.

I hate how the singers in this movie dance around the notes rather than hitting them. I don't get it, is it to flex how talented they think they are? It sounds disorienting and annoying, and it's everywhere in this movie I hate it.

Basically, yeah. Even back in 2010 with people like Justin Bieber were praised for singing the same way. Ever since then pop singers have been drifting in figure 8's around the notes in a song

The annoying thing is, when used properly, singing a progression or sequence of notes in quick succession can be very impressive, but it only works when that specific part of the song is to show off your skill (think "The Diva Song" from "The Fifth Element" and the covers of that). When you're singing a song which is trying to convey an emotion, however, it's distracting and sucks all of the emotion out of it. The message of the lyrics and the storytelling takes precedent, not the singers vocal ability. I don't care if Beyoncé thinks she can wobble around a note without even trying, I care if the lions are falling in love!

He actually cares about how the songs sounds musically. But it seems like Beyonce and JD McCrary just want to narcissistically show off their vocal range and don't care about the song itself.

​@@syphonfilter9897 Freddie is another great example, great pick! That man loved to get experimental and flashy, but he did so as an artist and still cared about structure and meaning. Even if you want to focus on musicals specifically, most musicals know to keep it for specific moments. E.g. "Defying Gravity" and "Let it Go" both feature Idina Menzel doing this, but they deliberately only do it once near the climax of the song when she's at her most excited and empowered. They even make a point to be sure that all of the lyrics have been sung and understood first. It's thematically appropriate and sparing enough to make you go "wow" instead of "calm down, woman!" It really does rub me the wrong way when you have a song that is so powerful emotionally and a singer takes that as an opportunity to show off. You're right that it comes off as narcissistic, but especially so when the song depends on you being able to listen and engage with what is being said (so literally every song in a musical). It's like the singer is saying "fuck your story, this is MY TIME." As much as I think the Beauty and the Beast remake was screwed out of decent covers (mostly due to poor audio work and bizarre editing choices, but I digress), at least Dan Stevens wasn't warbling all over the damn place while singing about the love of his life and how she'd changed him forever.

I feel like in the lion king 2019 the singers do not let a note sink in long enough to have an emotional impact before moving on to the next 20 notes they want to dish out to you within the scale, and it sounds like they never even want to land back on the root note of the scale which makes it sound off. Not necessarily a bad thing in music, but unexpected and unsatisfying when trying to convey deep emotions in a scene. And this just leads to an emotionless, disorienting, and detached feeling when listening to it.

In the animated film, the original concept was Simba tells her goodbye and wants her to wait in the jungle because he loves her and doesn't want to have her get hurt and she goes after him anyway because she cares for him. Only to be changed in the final draft to Rafiki telling Nala, TImon and Pumbaa that 'De King has returned!' In this film, when they had those concepts to work off of AND her telling Simba she's leaving by morning and waiting for him.(which was in the novel that came out weeks before the film did), They instead they decided to make Nala go from: " I need to find help, Scar is too strong. ' To "DID YOU FORGET I AM BEYONCE BITCH? I'LL GO AND FIGHT SCAR BY MYSELF EVEN THOUGH I LEFT TO FIND HELP IN THE FIRST PLACE."

The thing you said about if Sarabi still being the queen I can answer that for you. In the original movie even after Mufasa died the Lionesses still treats Sarabi with respect and in the deleted scenes the lionesses and Zazu still call her “queen Sarabi” and respect her like a ruler. Since Sarabi is the queen of the pride lands share not only the wife of the king , she’s also the leader of the lioness hunting party. Since Sarabi is in charge of the Lioness hunting party she gets to tell them where to hunt and leads them to new hunting grounds. It makes absolutely no sense for Nala saying “lions attack” because she is not the queen and only Sarabi would be giving orders to the other lions. Nala wouldn’t become queen until the end of the movie when she marries Simba.

Jasmine's power ballad feels even more out of place because it's this weird Western pop song about girlboss feminism when every other song is a broadway show tune with Arabic influence. It just rubs me the wrong way because like, Jasmine has all this privilege being fuckin royalty and all, and she's like "I won't be speechless!" but she has a hell of a lot more room to say things than women of lower classes in her society, and is still really outspoken as a character. Live action remakes Disney is kinda regressive when it comes to feminism actually, because they think that feminism is about girls being strong in a traditionally masculine way (female CEOs and female characters whose strength lies in kicking as much ass as the boys). Nala already had a song in a TLK thing. It's "Shadowlands" and it's so beautiful and majestic and you really get the feeling of the exact headspace Nala was in. Upon his death (and the rise of his succesor, in this case Scar), she would become a dowager Queen until a new Queen is announced. Nala would have no power, as she would have been too young to have been in Mufasa's harem at the time of his death, and would thus rank even below the other, more senior lioness's. I remember watching a bootleg of the original Broadway cast of Lion King from 1997 and Heather Headley was Nala. My goodness, she was so good. Just her deep, powerful voice brought such a presence to Nala. She sounded like a real lioness, almost like how JEJ and Jeremy Irons sounded like real lions when they played Mufasa and Scar. Nala also has a big solo number in the show called “Shadowland”, where she basically tells the pride that she is leaving to find help and the other lionesses and Rafiki bless her and send her on her way (this is the basis for the scene where Nala escapes Pride Rock in the movie). Everyone in the original Broadway production was great in their roles, my personal favourite being Jason Raize as Simba. He was better than Broderick in my opinion. Jason was really able to make you feel like this was Simba’s story through and through. Sadly he took his own life in 2004. He was only 28 years old. I feel so sad for his family, friends and colleagues.

I think I see adam's point on the hyenas. The original is "problematic" let's say, but because it doesn't pretend to be deep and keeps it simplistic and one-dimensional you don't tend to linger on it. The remake trying to be more "nuanced" and "sophisticated" but still keeping the hyenas as the baddies makes you ponder on the implications of its messaging. It's like, why are we rooting for the monarchy again? These hyenas make some pretty valid points. Especially since they're basically a subjugated class and coded as black.

In the orginal, when Scar is questioning why the lionesses aren't brining in any food, he calls Sarabi specificity and implies that she's the one leading the hunting parties. So yes, Sarabi still had authority over the lionesses, but it really doesn't even matter because when Scar confesses, they all attack basically without prompt because the king just admitted to regicide. They don't need a leader to prompt them to action.
