@TheHuntsman63 жыл бұрын
maybe it’s me misremembering the film but I thought he only planned to kill mufasa. The blame for his death seemed like a little thing that came with the plan instead of what the plan was supposed to be. Like he didn’t know what to do with simba after. Scar sent simba away ‘cause he thought he would just die of starvation rather than directly killing.
@Moony15683 жыл бұрын
@@TheHuntsman6 Scar sent the hyenas after him after telling him to go away. They gave up after being blocked by thorns and decided that Simba would die from starvation. Scar planned on killing both Simba and Mufasa at once. When he addresses the lionesses, he says something like “The loss of Mufasa and Simba is a terrible tragedy.”
@SylentVoidkeeper3 жыл бұрын
The idea of Scar blaming Simba was likely just something that came to him after Mufasa had died as a sort of emergency backup plan, and since Simba was too young to realize his uncle was evil, he believed him because of how manipulative Scar was. From adult rationality you could see a number of issues with Scar’s logic in how it’s Simba’s fault, but to a child who’s incredibly traumatized you could believe it.
@menzoznem3 жыл бұрын
I think he doesn't kill Simba for several reasons. Maybe he prefers to have his minions do the work for him as he doesn't like to get his hands dirty and risk getting caught with killing simba. Lastly, perhaps he can't mentally do it as Simba is a little kid of the same species. Perhaps that is just too cruel even for scar. Additionally, it makes sense in terms of the story that he sends the hyenas to kill simba now as that was the way he tried to kill simba before. Now Mufasa isn't there to save him anymore, the plan should work.

Things like Simba’s eyes getting huge is something you’d notice if you took it out. Animation tends to look stiff without the slight exaggeration. It helps add to the effect of him being startled by Scar’s sudden “No!” and turning back to him. The emotion and reaction would seem more underwhelming and it’s honestly kind of amazing what a difference one panel adding that “snap” in an action makes.

@comixproviderftw_023 жыл бұрын
But does it have the exaggerated swagger of a black girl meme?
@mr.guydude3 жыл бұрын
Part of the reason why some things in animation like the original Lion King are drawn so exaggeratedly is because the animators must account for motion blur. So they often stretch the characters or make certain aspects of the animation pop to convey movement more fluidly.

When Mufasa died in the remake, which the original made into one of the most powerfully sad moments in any family film, I can’t remember if I was laughing in the theater or simply had my jaw on the floor with my face shriveling back in revulsion at what I was witnessing.

12:45 We don’t get the hyenas talking because there is no hyena trio in the 2019 movie akin to Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed did in the original. We have Shenzi as the leader, and we have Calamari and Azari as two insignificant “comic relief” hyenas that have no meaningful connection to the former. As a matter of fact, I found it hilarious when the three of them and another random hyena chase after Simba, and the fourth hyena fucking runs off a cliff just so we can have a shot of the three named hyenas standing together for a moment as if they were a trio, even though they are not. It also explains why the hyenas have so little presence in the 2019 movie, since you can't recreate most of the scenes from the 1994 movie when there is no established trio to speak of, and Shenzi isn't allowed to have any camaraderie with Jon's two OCs because she's too busy girl-bossing it XD

I just watched your finished review and now I’m slowly going through these highlights. Idk what it is man, but I’m always immediately engaged?? The way you talk about things and the points you make are really compelling and they make a lot of sense, plus they have given me a whole new outlook on the original film and a deep appreciation of its subtle story-telling choices. It’s just really interesting to hear you go through each part and explain what makes the original work and what makes the remake not, no other person that’s reviewed the remake has illustrated half as much detail as you, it’s insane!

The pan up shot with the wildebeests definitely happened away from where they ran down. The pan up was directly above where Simba was, but the stampede entry point was way to the left of him, hence why he looks over and sees them coming down from a distance. If that cliff face where the camera panned was the entry point, they would have just fallen on top of Simba; rather than run towards him.

Seeing these scenes and bits of dialogue in context reminds me of trying to "rewrite" things as a dopey young writer and trying to add nuance and complexity where either it didn't belong or where existing nuance went over my head. Scar saying the valley is some rite of passage sacred place is exactly that. It actually feels like fanfiction. The pacing and logic of the sequence is perfectly good without pulling bullshit reasoning out of your ass.

I think Adum already mentioned that with the entrance of Mufasa in the first real scene of the movie. But, the way Mufasa shows up to save Simba from the Hyenas, is so incredibly Marvelesque that it hurts. It's like Iron Man or Captain America have come to save the day.

I always find more to say on this lol.. But in the original in the scene where they show the full scope of the gorge you can tell that the sun is not quite down yet. It is late in the day and clouds are covering the savanna in a beautiful kind of speckled light. This leads to him running away at dusk "presumably running alone all night by himself" until he collapses and passes out until around noon the next day to be found by Pumbaa. AND YET AGAIN in the REMAKE you can't tell ANY OF THIS. It is all the same boring ass dusty dry dead looking day for all I noticed. EDIT: The original utilized SO SO MUCH of the landscapes to portray emotion and inner turmoil/joy you name it... Sad to see Disney FORGET this ENTIRELY in pretty much EVERY remake.

This film's direction of the weather is very weird. I know I'm like the millionth person who says this, but during the "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" scene in the remake, it takes place *IN THE AFTERNOON!!* Unlike the original, where it looks like the sun is setting and it's starting to get a little dark. This is, supposedly, an animated film where you can make the weather be whatever you want it to be. How do you screw that up?

yES vs YES Why does this movie have characters say “yes” in such awkward and memeful ways?
@lilliegreenlaw3 жыл бұрын
18:20 Here's my biggest problem with the echo on the "yEs". It's so clear--you can tell it's either artificial or produced in an empty room made specifically to produce an echo. The gorge isn't going to produce a perfect echo, though--all the irregularities in the wall are going to warp it, just like audio produced outside sounds completely different to audio indoors.
