Scar telling Simba to roar in the original movie is the equivalent of telling him to stand on the big red X where the piano is going to be dropped. What Simba was doing there was unimportant, Scar just wanted him to stay in that spot.

Jon didn't make Iron Man come on. Those films are made by committee. Considering everything else he's made is garbage I think we can safely assume other people involved were responsibly for Iron Man being decent. Like M.Night and the Sixth Sense.
@videogamenostalgia

@@1xoACEox1 Jon actually had quite a lot of creative control over Iron Man; Robert Downey Jr was a bit of a gamble and it was almost an experimental movie (Marvel expected Hulk to gross much higher and be the basis of a more grounded MCU). It's only the post-Iron Man 1 movies where the studios really took over micro-managing the franchise. Iron Man worked primarily because it had a great cast - there's nothing particularly special about the directing (and remember there are lots of extremely average and forgettable bits - like the movie's entire climax).

The original score was one of the most unique scores Hans Zimmer ever made. Besides the African inspired motifs, it was used only when necessary, leaving some scenes with only dialogue so the audience won't get distracted. The remake completely bloated the film with noise so the audience won't get bored, and made it sound more generic as a result.

It seems that's a major problem with a lot of mainstream films nowadays coming out of either Disney or the superhero genre. No time to breathe, gotta keep having a noticeable score in the background to make the audience understand what emotions to have for a specific scene. The filmmakers basically treat the audience as if they're imbeciles.

This whole movie has no sense of rhythm, the sequences are always at the wrong speed, not understanding what the intension in the original scenes were supposed to communicate.
@sorryifoldcomment8596
@sorryifoldcomment8596 3 жыл бұрын
@@luismarioguerrerosanchez4747 I wonder if a factor is how they created the animal models. I may be wrong about the exact ways it affects it, but every character is ultimately based on the Nature Documentary video clips they chose to copy from. Jon described how they picked clips of real animals from videos found online. They organized them by emotion and then in VR, they had their CGI animal models copy the behavior. However, when it comes down to the collection of Nature Documentary clips they chose to recreate...these still feature different individual lions, in different environments, all moving at different speeds... It's not like how the animators drew the original lions in every emotion, all from the same model, all from the same context. Instead, it was a mashup, and I wonder if they failed to account for the real life animal body moving in ways that are not just connected to their head/face, which does affect how they are communicating that emotion. In each real life clip, the animal's mouths may be moving in the same way, their face may look similar, they may be even feeling the same...but in the original clips, of course, there's still at least a slight difference between their speed and direction of the body that the head is connected to. There's also a difference between the space each lion is moving in, further affecting the movement/rhythm (from flat terrain, to on top of a rock in a zoo, etc.). Just the little things that add up. Idk how to adequately explain myself lol but I see a problem that may be involved in the terrible/lack of rhythm. Every original clip of real life animals had a different rhythm, you know? This was a challenge they had to overcome when taking all these clips and smashing them together, when they ultimately only took seconds from each one. (This applies to every character, every animal.) They definitely worked hard on it, I'm not saying they didn't think about it at all. If they didn't, then there would be ZERO rhythm and no followable action, and that had to be taken care of immediately in order to establish any moment to moment movement. I acknowledge this work not to be nice, but to stress how much would need to be done about it. IMO, they needed to do a lot more work on movement later in production, big picture movement. It's not the ultimate problem, they didn't literally combine all the clips in a row or anything, it's just the translation. I just see it as another problem that could have contributed to how much trouble the rhythm has. This movie needed a lot more work, that's my ultimate takeaway lol. Pretty much every department needed more time. They just dropped the models in and crap audio and released it lol. I am truly shocked at how rough every aspect of this movie is.

@@sorryifoldcomment8596 Wow, I didn't know that. It just makes this whole production look alot lazier when comparing to how the original and other older, better, Disney project would have a pre-production process of months of research trying to get the right look of the environment and animals the were working on. But what I meant was the pacing of the stamped scene. When compare side by side you can see how the original cuts wisely between Simba's reaction and the wildebeests coming down from the cliff to create tension and a sense of urgency to save Simba. Nothing of that happens in the 2019 remake, as Adum says, Favrau tries to compensate with the overbearing Hans Zimmer score but it fails because the sequence is so poorly directed.

The point was more that they're not eating large animal meat or anything, but it's phrased in such a stupid way. Like of course you wouldn't want your lion protagonist for kids to be gutting antalope apart on-screen, they're way too relatable for that to NOT make them look bad or raise some questions. I always cry when Mufasa is shown laying dead in the dust, ALWAYS. None of this is negative though. The Lion King causing me to get so worked up after watching it probably hundreds of times throughout my life proves that it is, indeed, a masterpiece. The debacle about Scar's motive is actually quite easy to explain. Scar was banking on both Simba AND Mufasa dying in the stampede. We can infer this because it would make no sense for Scar to intentionally plan to have Simba blame himself over Mufasa's death, if the next phase of Scar's plan was to instantly send the hyenas to kill him anyways. There is no need for Simba to feel guilt if he is meant to be eaten by hyenas. And the hyenas were not sent out to chase him away either, Scar said "run away and never return", and Simba had already started running away from the Pride, so there was no need to also throw in hyenas if Scar had wanted Simba to survive with survivor's guilt. What Jon Favreau does here is imply that Scar's plan all along was to kill Mufasa in such a way that would make Simba feel directly responsible and run away from the Pride. Which would be an OK angle, if Jon's Scar didn't also send the hyenas with the intent to finish him off like in the original, OR if he was shown to have a genuine soft spot for Simba. I can't believe I'm smarter than a director that made billions of dollars and don't have a cent to my name. Life is unfair

I always assumed that the reason the landscape was so desolate when Scar was king was because they killed off too many of the animals to eat, and it upset the ecosystem, playing into the whole circle of life theme. I never interpreted it as God being angry. Oh well.

That's how I always saw it as well. They didn't need a supernatural force to destroy all the resources, it was done using the natural forces of Scar and the hyenas/whoever else. Not realistic, but it is established in the movie, and definitely makes more sense than God. (If a God is involved, then it definitely just hates the hyenas, more than Scar lol.)

17:34 - 18:20 I remember that happening with the YMS review of The Visit; people having gripes with him saying how the high definition footage hurt the believability of the film, completely ignoring the context of said footage coming from what was narratively described a used, damaged camera and going "lawl r u srsly complaining about the good quality?" Selective hearing doesn't even begin to describe it.

I think Adum fundamentally misinterpreted Scar's plan. Scar avoids killing Simba himself not because he's afraid he'll be busted by other lions, but because it's established that Scar himself looks like foreign, weak and with very female moves.

Wait! If making Simba roar was part of Scar's plan, does that mean that that chameleon was secretly working for scar all along? Holy shit! I think I've uncovered the real evil mastermind of the movie. That lizard conspired to kill Mufasa and got away with it.

32:00 - 32:30 Something I noticed, is that use of music feels like a mix of "Simba climbing from the stampede" and "Mufasa running to save Simba", basically both high and low instrumentations mixed indicating that the two are in the same place in the moment.

It must be AWFUL having to edit this because you can't simply fast forward or rewind to a point in the film to get an audio clip or a reference shot because there are literally 0 facial cues as to what the F is happening in any given scene.. You would have to press play and WAIT until an actor talks to have any notion of what to grab.

Adum didn’t go into this (no shade, there’s way too much to praise the original and lambast the remake for here), but that shot of Mufasa spotting Simba on the tree and the accompanying musical cue [41:27] hits me SO HARD now that the music/visual synergy has been pointed out. We get Mufasa’s heroic “Dad coming to his son’s rescue” theme as he and Scar scan the gorge and then, when Zazu points out Simba and the shot changes to Mufasa’s perspective, seeing his son in near-death peril, the music breaks from an intense but coherent heroic motif to the chorus literally staccato panic-shouting. Just like the squeal-esque musical cue when Zazu startles at spotting Simba for the first time, the music is expressing Mufasa’s internal emotional reaction. He’s panicking. The situation is so dire to him that the composed king gives way to the desperate father and we HEAR that emotional internal shift in the music. It puts us in the characters’ heads and makes us feel what they feel. It’s so fucking good.

6:49 The main reason why everything is terrible under Scar's rule is that he doesn't respect "the circle of life". He's an incompetent ruler who can't get food and doesn't care about balance. The idea is that everything goes back to normal, not just because Simba is the true king, but because he's a competent ruler who respects the balance of nature.

Honestly Adam, your explanation of the symbiosis of music and visuals for the canyon scene is some collegiate level analysis that I could imagine a professor using as an actual lecture for film school. I was just nodding along the whole time and speaking aloud alongside you because I knew exactly where you were going with your analyses and articulations, since I felt the exact same way watching the film and understanding exactly what you saw in it. Exemplary work as always my dude. Keep on keeping on.

Adum's breakdown of the music in the stampede is a great example of how something on paper might be great but in execution, it can fail. Like "Martha" in BvS, using the same amazing moments and music from an amazing movie should be good, but not understanding how and why ruins it

@@williamshelton4318 see that's the thing. On paper, I know the idea is "Batman has to take a step back and realize that this guy isn't a monster. He's kinda like him". The issue is everything around that suggests otherwise. Superman is an asshole, batman's a psycho. It shouldn't work for these characters

I really appreciated your rant about the stampede music, the musical cues, and how the visuals are symbiotic with the score. With the original score, I can close my eyes and almost visualize the entire (stampede) scene in my head from the musical cues alone. That’s how you know just how meaningful those musical choices are, and how the music tells the story in the absence of dialogue.

Oh thank god he mentioned the score and the animation complementing each other! Notice that when Simba was climbing onto the tree limb in the OG, the beats fell in tandem with his movements, too, it's great. Anyway, I feel like a lot of movies these days have lost that dynamic- the music is just...there. On the very rare chance I find time to do videos, I always try to make my art harmonious with the music I'm using. This is why you should have someone who has actual *creativity* directing animated movies.

The long rant bit of this video was absolutely beautiful. Adam perfectly illustrated the outstanding symbiotic relationship between the score and the visuals. I dunno if YMS will see this but when they are searching for simba, it plays the same music that played when you saw simba climb on the tree. So in a way, the music being the same is telling the viewer and listener that mufasa and scar are looking for simba.

41:07 It also ignores the technical reason: this oddly low key moment in an otherwise hectic score was necessary so that you could hear the dialogue, and it makes no sense to have a lull when the scene is getting more tense if you don’t need to hear what’s being said.

Everything you’re ranting about is probably exactly why Zimmer is just drunk in the interviews. He 100% just took the paycheck and got drunk. You can hear some things are adapted to the film, but Zimmer was probably also told to keep the original score for nostalgia-points even if it didn’t match up or work cinematically. In addition to that they placed absolute morons on the sound-team, including Pharell Williams.
