Better to use the diacritic to avoid any further confusion. yoga = योग yogā = योगा and give saṁskṛta pronunciation guide at the end of the book

आपने बहुत अच्छी बात कही - हमें भारतीय होकर चर्चा करना चाहिए। मैं हैदराबाद से हूँ और हिंदी जब बोल सकता हूँ, तो नई दिल्ली के नगरवासी संस्कृत में बोल सकते हैं। संस्कृत को हमारी राष्ट्र भाषा बना देनी चाहिए।

@Stephanie Ellison The speaker says that other Indian languages, even though influenced by Sanskrit, changed some pronunciations. In Hindi and some other languages (Braj basha etc) they dropped the a sound in the end. So राम is pronounced as राम्. He does not think this is due to Persian or Urdu influence. Local languages just evolved that way. This dropping of a sound has a name and is called "schwa" - something (audio was not clear). Nityanand ji also pointed out that in S. Indian languages also a sound is dropped in names of people - Raja Kumara is written (and pronounced as) Raj Kumar.

I feel that while speaking Ram/Krishn, our mouth is closed and sound passed from back of head to Agyachakra (which is good for Dhyan/meditation) and For Rama/Krishna, your mouth is wide open and sound energy goes out from your mouth which may be good for Bhajans/group chanting :)

🚩Mishraji, First of all, appreciate you pronouncing Kannada(ಕನ್ನಡ) as कन्नडा and not as कन्नड़. Btw, Dr. Raj kumar's original name was Singanalluru Puttaswamaiah Muthuraju. "Raj kumar" is rarely used in south, which explains this exceptional distortion. In Karnataka, as you rightly pointed, the "aa(ಆ/अ)" is not compromised. E.g Nagaraja (south,KR) vs Nagraj (North-Western); Mahesha(south,KR) vs Mahesh (NW). Rajivji, Thank you for adressing this issue. 🚩जय भारती 🚩🙏

Ram, Rama and Raman are names of the same person. A person from North of the Vindhyas would be called as Jankiram. A person from Kannada, Andhra and Tulu speaking regions will be called as Janakirama. A person in Tamil Nad and Kerala will be called as Janakiraman. It's all about mutual respect. Jai Bharat.

This has always irritated me that most of us with western education and habit of conversing in English, write and pronounce with the letter "A" added at the end of these Sanskrit words. I thought that it was the easiest way the westerners tried to spell, as close to the original Sanskrit pronunciation, by adding "A" at the end. It appears to have ended up being "AA", vocally !! Dropping the end "A" would make the last consonant as a half one (Halan in Sanskrit). I think even if we use English, the Sanskrit words should be pronounced correctly even if we add "A" at the end.. Thank you for a relevant and interesting conversation.

I would like to point out that South Indians very well know the difference between spoken language and formal written language. They never argue their spoken form is the accurate form. While writing they follow the correct spelling etc. Hindi has a habit of dictating whatever they speak is correct.

I don’t understand why in the below comments are Indians debating about how to correctly write “Indian language words” in “English”?? Simply put it is a pointless debate. Because our languages have their own scripts and they give proper spelling and pronunciation in that. And it’s fully sufficient in that. In English whether you spell yog or yoga it doesn’t matter to the correct usage of the word in India. The only place whether it has impacted is that westerners have picked up the “yoga” sound as “योगा” and all Indians (especially urban ones) replicated it in their own lives as it is, when ideally it should be pronounced as योग or योग् or योगा depending on which Indian language you are speaking. That’s it.

Until the seventies ,at the latest, Yogaa(the physical exercise), ,as we call it today , was always referred to as YOgAbhyAsam. My guess is that the 9maatraas long word got shortened to 4 mAtrAs longYOgA in keeping with the Tamil tradition of shortenning too long words to 4-5 mAtrAs long word, just as Coimbatore gets shortened to KOvai & KAnchIpuram to KAnchi or Kanchi,( to keep metre). This might have got picked up by the Westerners, as Krishnamaacharya was based in Chennai . Another aspect is YOga, as in Bhakti YOga is pronounced Bhakti YOgam in Tamizh. In Tamizh the Hrisva 'a' is usually attached to either 'm' or 'n' depending on whether the word refers to a male or an inanimate object or an abstract idea.

Some shortfalls in explanation. Telugu and Kannada both do not use long forms. That means they do not use YOGAA (योगा), but YOGA (योग). GA (ग) is HRASVA (ह्रस्व) with one matra time but not DEERGHA (दीर्घ) with 2 matra time. Because, Hindi has consonant ending words HALANTA (हलन्त = हल् + अन्त) there is confusion. But in Kannada and Telugu we have AJANTA (अजंत = अच् + अन्त) words meaning vowel ending words like अ but may not be आ. According to MAAHESHWARA SUTRAS (माहेश्वर सूत्राणि) अच् ACH denotes vowels and HAL हल् denotes consonants. For example both Telugu and Kannada clearly differentiate pronunciation of SHIV (शिव्) SHIVA (शिव) and SHIVAA (शिवा). Only North indians have confusion in finding the difference between शिव् and शिव.

East - West is Natural movement. North - South is Human being (while standing / alive). Thus there is a creation of movement related emergence of energy. Vowel & consonant combination. Or male & female combination. Female is the mould for Act / Karma & Male (Actor) must involve to become Act. Thus there is expansion of potential in to kinetic state. Now, Expression (child) is the Prakruti. But it will be a combination of both & thus a Vikruti (Special or Reflected Expression of original). This Vikruti will have local influence and thus more suiting to the Time / Place, unlike parents. Parents are Ancient and thus old & child is new & thus more relevant. Place, Time & circumstances can thus influence the result, so it becomes relevant. Food, climate, water, language & every Child thus is relevant to geography. This is another way of understanding Dharma (Identity) as well.

I agree with analogy when it is about about Indian languages and makes sense. However, when we are more focused on how to communicate Sanskrit in English language. I feel a English speaking person will pronounce Rama in wrong way as compared to Ram. So writing "Ram" in english is better than "Rama" which will bring wrong pronunciation.
