I just learned how to do this at age 63. I can do it for about 6 seconds. The first time I tried it I thought it would be impossible, but with each effort I could do it just a tiny bit longer. Took about two weeks of effort.

Thank you so much! I've given up this post many years ago after falling both ways for too many times and after watching this learned couple of tricks, like keeping you chin on the ground when you start lifting your leg etc, and after years I've managed to get just right for few seconds! few seconds of glory :)

There are actually two different opinions on this. Some people say that it's better to lift the legs higher, while other indicate that the body should be horizontal. It's definitely easier to lift the legs and much harder to keep the body totally horizontal.

You are truly such a down to earth and knowledgeable Yogi, who explains each pose with such ease and definable detail and who continues to talk through-out the pose - incredible! This is one of many arm balance poses that I have been working on for some time, but my main issue lies within my core (which isn't very strong) and to which I am really working on right now. Thanks so much for your tips which give me hope! 🙏🏻

As a calisthenics athlete this pose reminds me of the elbow lever except with your hands at shoulder width they are close together and I just tried this pose after watching this video and I was able to hold it for half a second and I think that I will incorporate this pose into my planche training so that I can learn the close grip full planche.

Try the shoulders first, then firm the core more. But don't let the core be loose while you get the shoulders into place. If possible, everything all at once.

LOL She use to do yoga from back in the 1960's up to the early 1990's. She is age 76 now and has had 11 children and still loos like age 50 and my grandmother is 105 years old this November. She was good but no way near as good as Kino. Kino has incredible power, flexibility and balance. Her yoga blows me away. I want to learn internal power and balance and not just external power Like boxing. I've done some Wing chun (which has internal power) with my cousin (teacher). Yoga is the one for me..

It's hard for Kino because I noticed her elbows don't reach her belly button. Nothing wrong with that everyone have different anatomies. For people whose arms are long enough and elbows sit to the sides of the belly button this posture is much much easier.

This is part of Yoga, not exercise, I am from India and according to Patanjali Yoga(Original Script of Yoga), MAYURASANA is PROHIBITED for women, as ladies have the different body structure than male also female's lower part is more sensitive for such tough balance (peacock pose)

Nice vid Kino! I've found it helpful to compare the pretty peacock and the lil' locust pose. Your comments are helpful - one surely needs the back body firing to keep everything from sagging but as you mention, the front body also has to work so your elbows have a platform.

Hi Kino. This vid helped me go to mayurasana. Funny thing is, I was watching this last night, then we did this in our class, the very next day, as our peak pose, kinda like our final challenge pose. When I tried I kept falling on my face and chin. It's just that I'm having a hard time bringing my head on the mat before I even get halfway to the pose. Hopefully I'll get it through lotsa practice. Just wanted to know if the shoulders should round first or the abdomen area engages first?

Definitely go check out a class, or even find one here on KZbin. And don't be afraid to look awkward. Everybody does the first few times. I was pretty hesitant when I went to my first class, but they usually start with a gentle sun salutation, which is a good warm-up and loosens you a little. Any decent teacher will know there are varying abilities in their class, and will suggest alternatives for beginners. Believe me, I felt like I had a body of reinforced concrete when I started four years ago, but now I'm probably the most limber man I know in my age range. Just did my first bound bird of paradise last week! (:
