Great review, Josh and team. The one thought i would have is, what is the excuse for the second usb c port not being TB on a laptop of this price? We sometimes get on Apple for deficiencies, but at least all usb c ports on MacBooks since 2020 have been TB. Also, the slower sd card reader -- it feels like Lenovo just wanted to check a box by including that port. Nonetheless, this does seem to be a pretty great laptop, and I am really glad to see 100w to the 4070. That is so important for people who might game some on this device. It makes this machine game as well with a 4070 as any other 'gaming' laptop with that component since the 4070 really doesn't gain any performance above 100w.

I note that Lenovo's website still lists the Yoga Pro 9i as "available soon" on the US website (as of April 2nd). That's fine. More concerning is that the tech specs list the GPU options as 4050 or 4060. No mention of the 4070 reviewed here. Hard to say what that really means. But it could be that those of us in the USA who are waiting for the 4070 version to become available will be disappointed. I asked an online Lenovo rep via their website chat, and the answer received was: "Hello there, please know that at the moment we still don't know if the Yoga Pro 9i will be released in the USA with a 4070 GPU, however I can gladly let you know at your email as soon as we have that information"
@michaelwolf2561

Today (April 4) Lenovo's US website is now listing a 4060 model for sale, delivery expected end of May. No 4050 model offered, and the tech specs continue to say that 4050 and 4060 are the only GPU options. I assume we'll have to wait until late May before it's really clear whether or not the 4070 GPU in this laptop will be offered for sale in the USA.

My "problem" is that I usually use laptops inside and I have got the minimum screen brightness set, so I always watch for the "pwm" when purchasing a laptop. This one, according to "notebookcheck net" does have pwm flickering at 6000 Hz and below 70% brightness level, which applies to me definitely. I may not be sensitive to this, but as I am using my laptop 8+ hours a day, I'm not planning on testing it ...

Awesome review. Very well done. Can I make a suggestion? At the end of each review video, could you display a particular table, that we viewers could screen shot? The table title would be for the particular class of laptop the reviewed laptop belongs to. Then each row in the table would list this laptop’s most relevent competitors (often I don’t know which laptops provide a “apples to apples” comparison.) Then the columns of the table display a rating from 1.0 to 10.0 for each major category: power, graphics, installed RAM, WiFi strength, battery life, keyboard temperature, price, etc. That way, in one shot I can know this reviewed laptop’s competitors, and how each of them compare relative to each other in the various features and help me decide which one is best for me. For example, for me personally, screen brightness and keyboard quality are more important than battery life. A consideration would be whether the scores for each feature are only relative to each other within this laptop category (ordinal scal ranking) , or if they are a rating that applies to every 2024 laptop in every use case category (e.g. 9.8 might mean the best rating, period, in a particular feature, like battery life, among all laptops one can purchase in 2024, from cheap, to super expensive.

@@forestfire47 Today I started to use it by installing Win 11 Pro and then the apps I use on a regular basis. I cant say I have used it long enough to say how I like it. I'm a desktop guy and have been using an iPad for years so the last laptop I bought had Win 7.......lol With that said the display is amazing, I watched a few 4k videos and they were so crisp and clear to the point I have never seen anything like it on a computer. I can only say it is like my 4K Smart TV's. The laptop feels solid and the keyboard is great to use, it has a nice backlight and the keys feel very good. It will be a few days before I really start using it but once again I am a desktop guy, I got this just to have a new laptop for when I travel. I have to set it up the way I like my computers, I also have to get rid of the Microsoft free trail of office off the laptop. Finally a review of this system, I have been waiting eons to see a full dive into it. Don't get me wrong, I still have issues with the decisions Lenovo is making, but they're still overall a solid laptop. Unfortunately, they killed the 14 inch, which had better battery life and port selection and was more portable, probably why they killed it off because they were tired of getting roasted for the smaller laptop being better. Also, something that needs to be clarified by channels doing reviews of this system: the 4070 SKU does not appear on the Lenovo Canada website, so if it is available, it is only available in the US, which is such a miss by Lenovo again, especially for the likely $3,000 price point in this market. It is also not available with 64GB of memory in the Canadian market. I don't understand why manufacturers bother to release these products in markets outside the US if they're hindered versions. Why would you not want your best products available across the global market? It's idiotic, and infuriating as someone that's been in tech for over 20 years and has watched this BS become more common. Edit: Evidently it only comes with a 4060 in the US market as well, at least according to Lenovo's own website. So, seemingly, they're not bringing the 4070 model to either of their biggest markets. I just don't understand. Stop sending a model to reviewers that nobody in their market can buy, or even in any market, it seems.
@scottdpeterstv
@scottdpeterstv 3 ай бұрын
US isn't getting the 4070 sku either, just the 4060. BUT a full powered 4060 at that. There are a TON of under powered 4070's floating around the laptop landscape right now like the Samsung Galaxy Book Ultra 4 so at least Yoga doesn't skimp out in that regard. I would have also liked this with a 4070 and 64gb of ram...

Great review! I traded in my 2023 Yoga Pro 9i for this years. One thing I noticed is that Lenovo removed the "balanced" performance setting and replaced it with "intelligent cooling", which I've been using. I had no problem with thermals or fan noise on the 2023 version, but I'm noticing a lot more fan noise and even hitting thermal throttling unless I keep the laptop well elevated for air flow. I don't know if you still have this laptop on hand, but I would be interested to see if this is a change between the 2023 and 2024 models or if I perhaps have a bad unit.

Great video :) Been looking forward to this laptop! The official specs note the HDMI port as: "HDMI 2.1, 6Gbps, up to 4K/60Hz" The 6Gbps meaning, that it is greatly cut down from the 48 Gbps HDMI 2.1 usually supports. Could you test whether or not it actually can do 4k/60Hz (at 8 and 10 bit)? Or if it is only able to do it with Chroma subsampling.

@@RedBeardedRabbitah, that makes a surprising amount of sense. Sadly in the video it specifically mentioned HDMI 2.1 TMDS. Which cuts the usable lanes from 4 to 3, since one is needed as a timing signal. If this is true, we'd have 18Gbps, which is the same as HDMI 2.0 and is barely not enough for 4k/60 10 bit. According to wikipedia, the highest video data rate for TMDS would just be 14.4Gbps, while the rest is used for all the extra features like audio, ethernet and error correction?

Hey Josh and Team, this laptop just released here starting at 1999 Euros. I can get a 10% discount. I initially wanted to configure it with a CU7, 64GB RAM and either iGPU or the lowest dGPU. However, (for the time being) I can only configure it with a CU9 if I want 32GB or up, which gets me an RTX 4060 at minimum. If I decide that I want 64GB I am forced to buy the 4070 model. I do full stack web development running an IDE and sometimes another editor on the side, a browser with lots of tabs, and either a VM or WSL (windows subsystem for linux). I also do other personal side projects with languages like Go. Question is, am I future proofed enough and should I get the CU9/RTX4060/32GB config for about 2K, or pay the 370 euros premium for the RTX4070 / 64GB model?

I'm nitpicking here, but isn't the contrast between the keys and the laptop too low, to the point where it's hard to see the keys? I know certain light grey colorways from ASUS are notorious for this, so was wondering if this Lenovo Yoga Pro might have the same issue.

I'm a bit jealous of that CPU performance with my new x360 16, but at least it looks slightly more efficient. I'm tempted to try a swap for the Yoga, but I also value the 2-in-1 capability. Great review.

@@omegasquadflame2330 The ASUS ZenBook 14 UX433FN, or one of its 14 inch model numbers. It was a literal fire hazard to handle. And the fans were very high in frequency noise and coiling at that. I highly suspect it was the cause of my tinnitus at the time as I used it as my primary device during those years. Also, keyboard literally broke after 2 months of use... really cheap plastic stuff at that, and uneasily annoying bright white LED light always on for the power button. So I just abandoned my laptop and used an iPad Pro till now, that laptop was terrible for school, not that the iPad was any better since I was in CS uni. Now though, I really do need a good laptop. It has been a while, so I am thinking if ASUS may have changed a bit for the better, I was looking towards their ROG G14 laptops since the specs were great on paper, it has many praises from so many laptop YT reviewers, but then for this channel, they rate it quite low for its high fan noise which was one of many problems the zenbook I had previously troubled me with. There were other problems I had with my zenbook, like surprised incompatibility in their ports despite industry standards, and literally plastic encased edges despite it claiming to be military grade... So, I advise that you consider looking for a real quality device that can deliver, from a quality company. I do not mean to rain on your parade, and, maybe this KZbinr isn't doing the ASUS ROG justice, but ASUS left quite the bad taste in my mouth and really failed me when I need it most during those years of CS study. And it really is a health and safety hazard from personal experience. Sorry if I am typing too much here, but I never really complained about this stuff to anyone. But hopefully you do some more research before purchase. But hey, you do you at the end of it.

Hi Josh, I bought the Lenovo Yoga 9i 2024 Gen 9 2-in-1 14-inch recently, and I've noticed that the OLED display has a lot of graininess. Upon my research, I found that this issue is caused by the GF2 or OGM (One Glass Metal mesh), which is a digital layer on top of the OLED screen. I'm wondering if the Yoga 9i Pro 2024 has the same issue. Unfortunately, it's not available in my region yet. Thank you.

I got in the same situation too. For me, I do Blender and programming too but I also don't do much gaming and would like a decent screen with decent battery, so I go with Yoga. Hey Josh and team! What do you recommend, a yoga pro 9i with ultra core 9, 32gb ram, mini-led touch, rtx 4060 (2300€) or Legion slim 7i glacier white with 13700h, 32gb ram, rtx 4060, 3200 res screen (1550€). The Yoga is brand new with 3 years premium care warranty, while the Legion only has a one year warranty, and is from ebay, apparently had faulty ram which was repaired (checked repair ticket with lenovo) , the seller mentioned the faulty ram but claims the laptop was unused. I have seen tons of your reviews, and decided to take your advice and order the Yoga pro 9i. I would mainly use it for music production but like doing some color grading when I have the time. I don't game. I wanted something that was closest to a Windows Macbook Pro laptop. (good screen, build, speakers, etc) The Legion just popped up and the difference in price is significant (800€) I would love to know what your recommendation would be. Is the Yoga pro 9i worth 800€ more? (I still have a chance to return the Yoga and buy the Legion if its still available) You guys are all awesome, just keep up the wonderful work, the community really appreciates what you guys do. Thank you and all the best!

Does the model in this video have a mini-LED or an IPS screen? Slightly worried that mini-LED one will have a bad battery life. But if you say this model has a respectable battery life & has a mini-LED screen, then I feel good about going with that screen type. Enjoying your channel the most of any laptop review channel Ive found! Great stuff.

hey Josh, thanks for the great video. Have you ever heard of the horribly designed 'side power switch' that fails very easily? There are tons of complaints about this and some proper research about it might help us out, maybe even a video about it. Salem also has a video about it saying he always got lots of Yoga's with that issue in for repair, which turn out barely repairable. I am personally wanting this, but its out in April sadly. Also, any news on Spectre 16 watt/perf limit?
