Happy to see another Alocasia fan! 🙌🏽 Your Zebrina Reticulata is stunning! Mine is still a baby and growing sooooo slow. I am in the US and just purchased another Azlanii since I killed the first 😢. They are pretty pricey here, between $160-$250 depending on size of the plant.

Love that Zebrina reticulata I've recently discovered the hard way that these babies love Lots of light! Direct sunlight is even good and doesn't hurt them as long as they have plenty of humidity. Oops, sorry, variegata- I personally love the leaves more than stems but she's all good.

Thank you for all your videos. I often learn something useful, but also your happy personality is a balm. I have three Alocasia, a tiny dancer, which is fun because it looks like a water plant swaying in the air, a black velvet that I love, and a Frydek that I feel I’m still learning, but getting the hang of and I’m looking forward to bigger leaves, even if they shade some of my other plants and I have to rearrange again (I feel I rearrange almost every day). In the spring I want to order a regal shield, which is affordable. I’m obsessed with the deep green leaves with red backs and bright veins. I also, someday, would love to get a cuprea. They absolutely amaze me, but right now they much too expensive here. Thank you again. 💚

I can't believe I had lost your videos! Im having the toughest time and day ever and boy oh boy...I've been watching so many plant vids to calm down and I have to say, yours put me in a TRANCE. You are a QUEEN! Curing anxiety and educating us about plants My birthday just passed and all I got was 3 alocasias I bought myself. I wish to GOD Zebrina were readily available in NYC. I got a Frydek tattoo recently (its my fav Alo), though im looking at a slightly overwatered pot right now. Anyway, this video made me realize I deserve LARGE alocasias, and that I was right all along about giving them a bit more light than always suggested. THANK YOU BOO

Beautiful collection Roos, your zebrina variegata is amazing! I’m a big fan of Alocasia too. I grow several and the zebrina, black velvet and frydek are my favorites. They’re thriving in bright light, my plant room has south facing windows also and I supplement in the lowlight areas with grow lights, so the whole room is lit. My Alocasia bambino did get spider mites a couple months ago, I treated it and haven’t had any issues lately. 🤞 I try to keep on top of cleaning the leaves as a preventative measure but I like the idea of using predatory mites. 🌱🌿🌵💕

I don't have the space for alocasias and haven't really found one that I really want. The lockdown situation have also reduced the amount of plants I've bought/swapped. Yesterday I did harvest my first Ceropegia woodii variegata seeds and my Christia vespertilionis gave me viable seeds and they have been successfully germinated. Plants have kept me sane during these weird times.

@@plantwithroos Have you seen a Black Coral? It’s my #1 fav plant in all of my collection. I would try and describe, but it wouldn’t do it justice. Let’s just say the leaves start as a small medium green, then turn a magical dark green/red/bronze. It constantly puts out leaves of all sizes, so you never have to fill in at the bottom. Merlot colored petioles AND ROOTS! She never stops giving. She’s a thirsty one.

I dont get it... Also I'm in the US and dragon scale, azlanii, and silver dragon are all pretty widely available here but it hasnt changed the prices too much. Silver dragon usually goes for arounds 80 usd, dragon scale 90 usd, and the Azlanii can still sell for 150-200 usd. Also I hope my zebrina reticulata gets as big as your variegated zebrina :)

Thank you for this video, great advice especially about the light! I had the alocasia wentii for a long time which actually grows fast in medium-bright light, so it took me ages to figure out that the rest of them need ALL THE LIGHT. Do you recommend removing babies from the mother plant? How long should I wait/do they need to be a certain size? My dragon scale has 4 babies so I should probably do something about them....
@plantwithroos
@plantwithroos 3 жыл бұрын
I waited until they had one leaf open and hardened, but that was just an experiment. You can also leave them in for a nice full plant - like my Frydek which is several plants! I took out my Cuprea babies cos there were 11 in that pot with the mama! 🤭 thank you lgl fertiliser 😬

Hmm I fine know, my zebrina grew roots out of the pot very quickly and I've repotted several times so I'd say they don't like to be rootbound. Peace. The cuprea is new to my collection. Had my eye on one with more shiny leaves and got one with one😳. The other leaves are smaller & darker with curling. Should those leaves just be trimmed? Also, does it like to dry completely before watering again? Thanks. All feedback is welcome.
@plantwithroos
@plantwithroos 2 жыл бұрын
Congrats! One of my favourites. I never recommend to trim leaves as there are still mobile nutrients in them that the plant will take back once they die off. Wait will the leaves are brown or fully yellow. I let it dry a lot and that works well, but it also depends on where you put it. lots of light!

I notice that you never really mentioned humidity yet all the books seem to stress how important high humidity is? I’m on my second Alocasia. My first was a polly which died from rot on the bulb! Probably my fault! My present one is a frydek which lost a leave in the first week! I took it out of its pot it arrived in and found lots of water saturated sphagnum moss around the bulb! I repotted it it with a more open mix but it lost its other leaf soon after! I’m hoping it will now recover although it is leafless at present! I’m in Scotland btw!
@plantwithroos
@plantwithroos Жыл бұрын
I do think humidity can help them grow easier but I successfully grow most of them in living room conditions. So it's not needed! Currently growing Frydek, ninja, watsoniana, zebrina. Oh if you're growing corms or small plants humidity does make it easier! In my terrarium they're doing really well. And this video is quite old, I need to make an updated one, I've moved most of them to semi hydro (see my recent plant chores video)

Hello, yellow and brown edges can mean many things. Have you seen my 'identifying pests' video? it can also just be fall/winter, alocasias are grown from a tuber (a bulb, like a tulip but different) and so they have the tendency to go into dormancy in winter and come back in spring.

VERY important tip: because of guttation don't let the leaves of your alocasia touch a wall, a table or any soft surface. They can stain it.. A hard surface can be cleaned, a wallpaper can't and your sofa will be stained forever. Will have to paint a whole wall because of it.

@@plantwithroos yes.. my Wall has light yellow stains from a big Alocasia calidora. those drops seems to fall on my dining table and stains it also but I can clean those. I found this info online: It’s mostly water, but there are a lot of other compounds as well: waterminerals & metals like potassium, calcium, manganese, iron and salt (sodium)sugars like glucose, galactosenutrients and amino acidsviruses, bacteria, fungi (dormant and active), depending on the host plantmicroscopic cell debris from nearby wounds on the plantproteins and compounds the plant uses to defend itself (antibacterial and antiviral)toxins and contaminants the plant seeks to expel.
