Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria; La Palma is the island where the volcano erupted. (El) Teide is the volcano on Tenerife. Probably too late for recommendations, but it's worth seeing Roque Nublo if you're up in the mountains on Gran Canaria! Have fun, Flax! (Also, beware: Maspalomas is full of German nudists).

Can confirm it gets hotter underground boys. Deepest I’ve worked is 1.8km and it was bullshit hot, that mine had cool rooms that you could go and sit in to cool down. Heat stress/exhaustion tends to be the thing that gets people in underground mines. Your ears do pop on the way up and down too, but I only tend to get that when I’m bunged up with a cold or something.

Lewis I am 100% for you making your own clothes! The modern "fashion" industry is probably the greatest collective producer of plastic waste. Plastic woven "cloth" is also horrible to wear, it doesn't form fit or wear in like organic fibers do. A drawcord you can tie as tight as you like it, no more and no less is far superior to any elastic band that is constantly trying to compress into you until it wears out and is too loose. If you make your own clothes not only will they fit _you_ unlike any "medium" size store bought equivalent, you will also know exactly how to repair them and your clothes will last decades instead of a mere few years. There is only upside to home tailoring; you even get Bernadette Banner videos!

Dry Adiabatic Lapse Rate is what Pyrian is talking about. That and the Wet Adiabatic Lapse Rate. Plus in the 80s there was a lot of "highbrow w*nky stuff" on TV. BBC2, for example, did DeBono's Thinking Course, plays, etc, C4 had Eqinox, loads of things. Movies by the time of Inception there was none of that because marketing said people are too stupid. Even dumb people want to be pushed OCCASIONALLY, and they had chances on TV, but nowhere in TV or movies to be stretched, and smart people had nowhere else to go. By the time of Inception it played hard and even dumb people hate being called dumb, especially when they are trying to push themselves. So they went to Inception. The problem with the reboot of Ghostbusters is that they all wanted to be The Venkman, and Venkman is rather dated. The actors were good, but they were written bad parts that didn't really have ANY chemistry going on and the writing was too busy being edgy to actually use the actors.

I know exactly what you mean with Neil Gaiman, and I sort of got sick of it in the same way. He'll set up some problem that the characters insist is unsolvable, then it'll get solved by the inherent magic of words or something unsatisfying like that. It's novel the first couple times it happens, but eventually you just become uninvested.
