I talk about Taro's philosophy regarding video game development. Namely his "invisible wall." Taro is the celebrated creative director for Nier and Nier Automata.

This is definitely my favourite video of yours. The potential of what a interactive medium like video games can do just sets my heart ablaze. It's so exciting! Thanks.

It'd probably be a good exercise to revisit that talk once every 3 years or so, so we can reflect on the greater video games industry, and our own (changing) preferences in games.

As one who is obsessed with yoko taro, I even have his book called. *the strange works of yoko taro* Plus writing a fanfic, that consist of an emotional peak, is what yoko taro says in one of his interviews, plus the invisible wall is something that crosses the line.

Actually you get ending E regardless of sacrificing your save data, it's more of a moral choice then anything, as tecnically speaking no one in the entire world would have to sacrifice the save to the ships apper, it would just make that everyone was going to be helped by people from the development team, and as consequence imo it is way harder choice than NieR Replicant "delete you data to get the last ending", it's Taro way of trying to see if you are willing to make good actions when it costs you something, unlike in other games when it just benefits you, and i sure am a shitty person as i failed this test and protected my save like a bear protects his food lmao.

In the OG Nier, there was no ending E, so you truly were sacrificing your save data for a fictional character.

Funny enough Automata's gameplay is actually fun. so would that mean even Taro knows that he can only go so far?
@JF-vz1ju Жыл бұрын
Actually I'd say Automata being fun is perfectly in line with the same mindset that would come up with Drakengard's supposedly intentionally bad gameplay. In Drakengard, Caim is a murderous psychopath. The repetitive nature of Drakengard's combat, combined with the massive amounts of murder required to unlock and level up all the weapons, and the truly unhinged OST really give the player a sense of Caim's insanity. On the flipside, the androids of Automata are literally programmed to derive pleasure from combat. So the player having fun is not only good from a gameplay perspective, but also serves the narrative. This is also why 9S's moveset is more limited than 2B or A2, because he's a scanner that is designed to avoid combat, so he is less fun to play.

To me, Automata's ending E is fascinating because even once you get past what's happening on the screen, it keeps asking you ethical questions. Late game in Automata is already full of rug pulls that recontextualize earlier events, and with this in mind you can see the strings in the Ending E itself when you look closer. And so past the first surface experience (which is already amazing) there's another one, one that leads you to question the meaning of the sacrifice that is offered to you. Are you a bad person if you withhold the sacrifice that may prove meaningless? Are you a bad person if you sidestep it, cut the strings and both give and keep at the same time? Is your experience any poorer than that of someone who played by the rules? I'm half-sure that this is intentional and Yoko Taro managed to turn cheating into a deep philosophical exercise.
@xenn4985 Жыл бұрын
The cheating being built into the game sure lends to this

Sir, atleast Yoko Taro actully plays his game. Hidetaka Miyazaki has never not once ever played a single one of his games. I respect them both but yoko Taro knows he is weird and makes games that are fun, Interesting and make you go wow you can beat these games and you still come back to finish it for another session. Because he wrote more about a game. No one does games like Yoko Taro.

i was thinking of commenting something about taro's mindset and how it tied into all the mediocre mobile games he's been making but I'm not really in the mood.
