***** Saying no offense before calling someone stupid seems counterintuitive don't you think? I'm not a 'Yoko Taro' fan Automaat is the only game of his I've played and I only played it because Platinum's name is attached. I did not say a word about Yoko being a fantastical genius in storytelling and game design. All of his games prior to Automata look jank as shit and are repetitive for the most part. I tossed a compliment his way because not imposing opinions is a quality I wish I saw more of in story driven games. I don't think you even know what I'm referring to with that. I don't mean imposing what a character conveys to the player to do in a situation, I mean it in the sense of what the developer is trying to say with his story and how he is presenting it. He does a good job at that, better than most games I've played in the last few years.

+Sakaar Its debatable, however mostly no. If you really played them all and really deeply learn them you will know. Yoko Taro left a lot of space for players to imagine. Specially, all his games don't directly continue or prequel to each other. All of theory on internet I read has few flaw and do not support whole structure itself completely. So does in each sub-story itself and setting. Just simply say to you, no offense, stupid that without actually understand the meaning behind the view and loudly present your ignorance is pretty unbearable.

Thank you for this interview. I just recently discovered Nier/Drakengard series and found out about Yoko Taro. He seems like a very nice and intelligent person who's giving all his passion towards something he loves to do. Nier: Automata was hands down one of the best games I've ever played in my entire life, really simple at first glance but the core of it is way more complicated, clever and brilliant. It's truly a gem amongst videogames. Needless to say I'm a big fan of his stuff now.

@deadsea20047 жыл бұрын
What an inspiring guy... he has become my role model of sorts. I love the idea behind the mask (or at least what I assume it to be). Yes, I know Yoko Taro doesn't like to appear on camera, but I like to see the whole mask thing as a way to represent his view on game development and teamwork in general. Without a face, there can be no one to point to to represent his games. And that's the beauty of it. He understands game development, and any company work actually, as something of a team effort, and not just a single person's glory. He wants everyone to be represented by this Emil mask, and not just Yoko Taro himself shining in the spotlight. This goes along with what he holds important: to doubt, in other words, can also be interpreted as humility. To understand and accept that even in a place of power, there will always be room for improvement and growth. The Emil mask shows his humble character. Despite being a director, working with large companies, earning himself both money and reputation, he still don the Emil mask and claim that he did not do much at all. lol I may have rambled a bit too long over a mask, but that's how I feel about this guy. Hell, it may not even be symbolizing anything, but I like to keep that idea in my head anyways.

I'm with you, I'm a little younger than you, but Nier Replicant completely redefined what games can do with storytelling to me. I've played all those other games people have said have good stories and they've all been horrible to be honest. I haven't felt anything like this in a video game since I played Half-Life 2 in my high school years. Over the past two weeks, I've slowly come to the realization that Replicant may be my favorite game of all time. There's certainly games with better combat, but I don't think I've ever felt this way over any piece of fiction in my life, and I digest a lot of fiction, mostly through books and television.

I really like how his works leads to varying interpretations, dependent on the player itself given that everyone went through the same experience. And I really respect that he doesn't impose on how it should be or what's right or wrong, making it more personal for the player's experience. And with that he became my favorite game director. Also thank you toco toco for this interview/mini documentary. I enjoyed it. Again. lol
Fun story. I never had a gaming console. The end. And I played NieR replicant only recently when it came out in steam. The loading screens there, it is pages from the main character's sister's diary. And one of those saying: "6th of June. Today is [charcterName] birthday, but he's not here. So I just had a party by myself!" I thought "Hah, what I nice touch, they took my birthday from steam". But I read some articles afterward and no, the game is not taking that date from steam. Originally developers from Cavia put Yoko Taro's birthday there as a placeholder. And it ended up in the final release )

I don't think video games can grow as a medium for storytelling without funding more eccentric types like Yoko. The west doesn't fund weird ideas, so we get low budget weird games like Undertale. I'm for more funding for weird people to make bigger weirder games. You can have a game with a cave woman fighting robot dinosaurs and call it creative but then a producer tells you it's a bad idea for the robot dinosaurs to speak to the protagonist about protecting their robot dinosaur family - to have them bowing before a pile of scrap metal and sacrificing their own to appease it might "weird players out". Why would you want to be emotionally invested and interested in the enemy you'll be slaughtering for the entire game? The player should be more invested in our diverse cast of NPCs who exist only to talk to the player in cutscenes and show off our grotesquely lifelike facial capture technology that we spent 5M on. Instead of actual world building, we must bloat the open world and fill it with as many meaningless sidequests as possible while injecting an enlightening, timely narrative about social diversity and accepting foreign culture in order to take down a patriarchal society. That is the path the player must walk in our game. This is our bold new IP. A giant step in the right direction for AAA gaming.

Normally I wouldn't reply to a 3 year old comment, but I like what you have said. I think there is way too much of an emphasis in western titles on ramming specific idealism down the throats of the audience without at least following it up with proper support or understanding of what it is that's at stake; Giving someone a rough, thick pill and having them try to swallow it without liquid isn't pleasant, and this doesn't even begin to address the issue of why that pill is being prescribed in the first place. You can just lazily say, "lol look at society, are you blind?", but that simply doesn't pass. Whether you are up to date with current events or whatnot isn't even the problem, it's the manner in which the narrative and themes are being presented.

"Dubito ergo sum" One of the most inspiring people out there. I became interested when, reading reviews of NieR Automata, people kept talking about him as "crazy". After watching some of his interviews, for the little I can understand about someone from a 20 min video, I don't consider him crazy at all. Just an incredibly unique visionaire. If anything, I wish anyone would be as "crazy" as him, and kept doubting everything they think to know, before imposing to others in a desperate try to hide their own fear of nothingness. If you just see the awkwardness of his social behaviour, and not the depth of his mind, then you're not doubting, just watching. Keep doubting, people, and maybe we will not become an extinct race.

As far as Taro goes, it'd probably have to be a not overly crowded place with alcohol. Being hyper reclusive and liking to get drunk are two prominent traits to Taro, so much so that he makes jokes around them. Like when he apologized to Germany for not being able to visit in person due to his liver acting up, and saying 'if I went there, all I'd do is drink your beer and eat your fancy sausages, so what's the point if I can't?'
