17,000 miles in and Houston we've got a problem..
I went in for a simple rotate and balance and came out with a terrible vibration. Three tries and the tires would not balance correctly. In this video I take you through some before and after, and give you my thoughts on the matter. Discount Tire ended up giving me a full set of 4 new tires under warranty! Not bad!

That is why I go to Discount tire. Their service is awesome. I had an old set of Geolandar A/Ts on my '04 Liberty got them in '08 and drove them for 10 yrs with no serious issues. Had a tread depth of around 4/5. Traded them in with the Liberty when I got my '15 Cherokee Trailhawk and will be getting the Yokahama's to replace the Firestone's that came with it when they wear out. Of course using Discount Tire.

Shaking at 55mph which is 88kmph is exactly when balance related problems kick in. You’d probably find it would decrease slightly if you accelerate and increase again once you hit about 65. Definitely indicates a problem with the balance. It’s a relief to see someone who doesn’t automatically blame the tyre as soon as there’s an issue and say I’m never buying that brand again. These tyres go through such quality control at the factory that most of the time problems are due to external factors.

My thoughts exactly. I like to find the cause of a problem rather than simply washing my hands of it. The replacement set has a few thousand miles now and still perfect.

I have these on my 2014 Ram 1500. Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 275x65x20 and have aprox 15,000 miles. I have rotated them with every oil change (5000 miles) and actually had them re-balanced about 2 weeks ago without issue. I love these tires and recommend to anyone looking for this type of tire. The reason I had them re-balanced is because I was never very happy with the job Mavis did originally, I had some shake at like 85 mph. Had high speed balance done at the dealer and couldn't be happier.

I have a new set of these installed about 8 months ago. Car body oscillates and shakes like in the video. Wheels and tyres rebalanced from zero twice. Front drive shafts replaced (one of them twice). Shaking still there when accelerating, particularly up hill. Lower wishbones replaced. All suspension and steering parts checked for security. The symptoms only started since changing the tyres. I bought from a discount supplier and am not up for an argument with them after 8 months (but not many kilometres). If my mechanic doesn't do road force balancing I may just replace the tyres with the previous brand that worked well. I was hoping the Yokos would be a good upgrade but I'm not convinced right now.

It's been years, but considering the amount of weight I see on the outside of the tire, you may have just gotten a bad one. I had a similar situation with ONE particular Goodyear Wrangler. Luckily i'm a technician myself and quickly discovered the Road Force data was at 65lbs (wayyyyyy beyond a max of 25lbs for a LT tire), I printed the data, emailed tire rack and the sent a new tire, no questions asked.

That is exactly what I was thinking. A busted steal belt or what I call a warped belt from hitting a pot hole. I have had mine on my truck for 7 years now G015 265/70/16 and getting ready to to get a new set. Great tire for the money and even though they generate more road noise the older they get it is hard to beat a tire that has lasted me 7 years. They have paid for themselves lasting that long.

Yep, threw a belt for sure. I had it happen on a set of Michelins and my car was undrivable. Started off as bad vibrations, then felt unstable in corners. Finally got them changed out and everything was perfect again. Only other explanation would be warping due to a defect in the compound, but that's less likely.

If I had to bet money, your tire had broken radial belt. It’s not super common but it can happen to any radial build tire on the planet. Given you’re driving in Pothole country USA I’m not surprised. I’m from south central Kentucky and drive in Tennessee often. Roads are the same here! Hope the manufacturer warranty was enforced and honored. I’m looking at a set of these next time I’m on the market.

I had a similar issues years ago with some eagle ones on my Celica, took em in and had a warranty prorate replacement but the tire shop was dumbfounded as to why they were shuttering so badly after a couple attempts to balance so they took a guess based on what I described as the corner of the car I though the shudder was coming from and they did some sort of inspection and they determined that one of the belts inside had Shifted some which created kind of an uneven high and low spot that was inducing a wobble and thus causing my shutter!

Thanks for being persistent with this review...really helps. Something I don't see for this tire is the Sidewall ply rating or even the tread ply rating. This makes a difference to off--roaders but discussion on this is mysteriously missing. If you wonder why so many people look at the Geolander then but the Goodyear or Goodrich I think it is because the other companies really push this feature...

I have bought 3 sets of these tires, I have had no issue with them. I just put on my last set last week, I changed out my other set of geolander go/15's that were at 4/32 in the front and 5/32 in the rear. The older set I still have, going to put them back on when the winter is over. The older set still did well in the snow, but not good enough for Pittsburgh and the hills. I still was able to get around, but not like they do now with the 12/32 of new tire depth. The older ones still gripped the dry pavement and wet pavement, so like I said, when the spring time rolls around I will be putting those back on to get the rest of the life out of them. These tires last me about 14-17 months depending on how much driving I do, I do a lot of driving. Great tires and like most things in life, you get what you pay for.

I had a similar problem with a set of General Grabbers. I had them installed on my 2017 4Runner a couple weeks ago. Well on the same day I had to run over to the other side of town and on the way I developed an incredible vibration in the steering wheel that made me think they forgot to tighten the lugnuts! Well I turned around and headed back home but on the way the vibration was gone! Totally smooth ride, really weird, anyway took it back to the tire shop the next day. They said that they thought their might be a problem with one of the front tires so they replaced both sides. I left and it was smooth riding. But then the next day on a trip out to my sons house same vibration, then smooth again! So I called the tire shop and they asked me if I had another tire preference and I said I"d like to try the Geolanders, so they are installing them on Monday. Really strange, kinda sucks because I really like the look of the Grabbers but I can"t get past this on and off again vibration. Good luck with yours!

I've not turned the tyres at all, the drive system on the Subaru means that all four are wearing equally. The rear if anything are slightly more worn than the front. Probably due to towing. I've looked at all your reviews and think I'll go with them before we get into Autumn and Winter. I do quite a lot off road but mostly it's wet roads in the UK that are the issue. I had two Yokohamas do to me what you are describing, vibration then way worse after "balancing," the first time I couldn't even make it out of parking lot of Discount! Turns out the tread had separated leaving a bubble. They replaced the first one, but for some reason got me for like $275 on the second around 8 mos. later. I have since gone back to Michelin on that truck. Looking for tires for our new '19 Forester Sport and thought I'd look at the GEO15's. But seeing this I don't think they are in the running any more. Did you verify your alignment is on point? If not I would get one and eliminate that factor. Why? Because as we know this issue can happen to any tire. I took my Michelins defenders to the shop and they discovered that the tires were cupping. I could physically feel and see the bumps through out the tire. This could be cause by either defective tire from manufacturing, road force or bad alignment. Improper alignment will cause unbalanced wear or cupping on your tires. Google symptoms of bad wheel alignment on tires. The reason for cupping on my tires was because of bad wheel alignment. Around 70mph to 80 mph my steering wheel would vibrate like crazy. I got the wheel alignment done now im going to purchase the Geolandars now and give them a try since everyone has been giving it great reviews.

There is a high chance it was the road force on the tires, described by high and low spots in the tire from the factory. Next time you have a issue like that have discount tire write down the road force readout on the receipt. anything over 35 pounds is a issue most of the time this can be fixed by rotating the tire onto a different spot on the wheel. if the road-force is not fixable then there is no way of fixing the vibration, the balance can be perfect on it and if there is a high road-force you will still see vibration - Discount tire employee

I had a similar problem once many years ago. It was a small internal layer separation. Essentially a mfg defect that either got past QC or was considered "within spec". It was purchased from a "discount retailer". One of the tire mechanics hinted that if quality was a concern for me I should buy tires from a "non-discount" retailer. LIke any mass produced product, there are manufacturing batches that don't quite measure up to spec. They are still usable, and may never be problematic, but it's possible. These batches may be sold at a discount, which ripples down to the consumer. The mfg'r knows which batches are "A" quality and which are "B". It's too costly to throw out a batch of tires that are perfectly usable, albeit not up to spec. I'd wager this is the discount retailer realm. I know this to be true with many other mass produced products. It's a matter of economic necessity, and most people wouldn't know the difference. If you do a little polite and discrete inquiring, you may be able to get a company representative to point you in the direction of which batch code you would be "most happy" with... If that information is available, and if you can cajole someone into "suggesting" a "preferred batch code", you may be able to run an end around future problems and headaches. Tirerack.com is very concerned with customer satisfaction. Their entire interface reflects this. In 20+ years I've never had a problem. Partnered tire stores seem to like the business model as it means they don't have to sit on expensive inventory they can't move. I think the actual tires may be a loss-leader for them. www.tireamerica.com/resource/tire-date-code

Separated belt in one or two of the tires. Often there are no visual clues. When the tire expands at high speeds so does the belt separation and itbstarts to shake. It's not uncommon from any of the tire manufacturers and certainly 'not' exclusive to Yokohama. The tire shop did the right thing, although they could have tried swapping out 1 or 2 replacement test tires and find the bad tire/tires to save themselves from having to replace all 4.

I had the same issue with the OE tires on my '18 GMC Canyon, Goodyear Fortitude HTs.. Dealership tried re-balancing them and claimed they "fixed" it, but the vibration was still there. Had them try again and still no luck. They finally said it was a road force issue and that there wasn't anything they could do about it, which come to find out later is BS.. They just didn't want to do it. I would guess that's the same issue you had. I've done some researching on road force and tire balance issues and as others have mentioned here, I've seen quite a few people say that these technicians who mount and balance tires should know better than to cram a bunch of weights on one side. It will only make a road force problem worse. I have also seen many people mention that the techs should remove the tire and re-mount it with the heavy spot rotated 180° from where it previously was so they don't need 2-3 ounces of weights on one side to balance it. But again, so many of these companies are more worried about speed and cramming in as many customers as possible in a day than taking their time and getting it right the first time. It's sad, but true. All that being said, I finally rid myself of the Goodyears and had a set of these Yokohama Geolandar G015s mounted yesterday. I actually just came across your channel, but all of the research I did before purchase very much matches everything you've said about them. They are the closest thing you'll find to a "best of both worlds" A/T tire. It performs and has the comfort of a highway all-season tire on asphalt, does very well in wet conditions and is fairly good in the snow. It's not meant for serious off-roading, climbing rocks or bogging through mud pits, but it will perform just fine on gravel and semi-rugged off road terrain. My first impression of them was very similar to yours, except I got to test them on wet roads right off the bat, as it was rainy all day up here in SW Michigan. I felt grip on the wet roads like no other tire I've had before.. Road noise is very low and the ride is smoother and more comfortable than the Goodyear Fortitude HTs they replaced. I think I'm going to love these tires over the next few years!

@@RocketScientist I was pretty curious how far along you were on the second set, since you hadn't posted another video in three years. Good to know the second set have been great for you. Whatever the issue was, I think it's pretty safe to say it was a manufacturer defect on the first set. Whether it was actually fixable or not, who knows. It's a very distinct possibility that they could have done more to try and figure it out, but giving you four new ones under warranty and having you buy four new certificates on them was probably the better option for them financially. I'm pretty excited about them nonetheless. Today I get to drive them on the highway about an hour and a half over to East Lansing for the football game, so we'll see how they do. I-69 up here is pretty rough, but these already feel much smoother on the road than the Goodyears. Can't say I have ever been impressed with that brand.. Not for truck tires anyway.

It's now July 2023 and I have the Geolandars A/T GO15's on my SUV since late 2018. Very loud road noise👎. Great traction on dry roads but lousy on snow covered roads! After 4 plus years, there is still plenty of tread as I don't drive a lot anymore.
@canyonero2050
@canyonero2050 5 ай бұрын
This happens to ALL tires, especially A/T tires. They will all lose traction with age regardless of tread depth, and they will all become louder regarding road noise. The rubber compound wears out with age and decreases performance even of you have plenty of tread left.

I've had this happen with some Mexican made Continentals before. I tend to think, the bigger and heavier the tires, the worse a factory tire imbalance can get. From what I've ready anyway, Yokohama seems to be one of the best at making a tire balanced from the factory. Japanese build stuff well usually. It doesn't mean there won't be a dudd out there though.

On larger size tires it is best to use balancing beads inside the tire . They provide superior tire balancing at all speeds by using centrifical force . They are especially good at keeping the tire balanced as the tread wears . However , not even this will work if the tire is severely out of round , has a tread separation defect , or the wheel itself has been damaged .

These tyres can distort a little, which causes vibration, sadly not every tyre will do it, so sometimes you may just get one that causes this problem. Typically 4x4 tyre construction is of heavier materials, which when damaged, or distorted will cause bigger problems than with a standard saloon car tyre.

@@RocketScientist I have found continental tyres are prone to uneven wear, and distortion, but not typical for 4x4 tyres, normally caused by impact, or heat, or combination, and rarely faulty production, by is more obvious on bigger tyres, and chunky tyres like the Yokohama tyres you have fitted will be more noticeable at early stages because of weight imbalance within tyre.
