Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.
Special Thanks to Kainuguni (Yonaguni language blog)
The Yonaguni language, spoken by about 400 people on Yonaguni Island in the Ryukyu Islands, is a Southern Ryukyuan language closely related to Yaeyama. It is not officially recognized by the Japanese government, which refers to it as a dialect. UNESCO classifies it as one of Japan's most endangered languages, second to Ainu. The island of Yonaguni, the westernmost inhabited Japanese island near Taiwan, is notable for its hanazake beverage, Yonaguni horse, Ryukyu atlas moth, and winter gatherings of hammerhead sharks. It is also home to the Yonaguni Monument, a submerged rock formation discovered in 1986. Kaidā glyphs are pictograms from the Yaeyama Islands, and most studies on the pictographs focused on Yonaguni Island.

Yonaguni is fascinating in that the two consonants "w" and "y" have undergone fortition: w shifted to b, and y shifted to z and then d. Eg: - 野菜 is "yasai" in Japanese, cognate with Mandarin yěcài. In Yonaguni, it is "dasai" - The name of the island: 与那国 (Yonaguni) is "Dunan" - 山 is "yama" in Japanese and "dama" in Yonaguni.

Sorry what are you talking about, how could [w] be fortify into [b], also [y] is not even a consonant and [w] is a semi vowel, do you care to elaborate? I am not sure what phones phonemes you’re referring about since you use quotation marks I’d assume it’s phonemes you’re on about? Idk about your phonetic representation if that makes sense, ta.
@msruag
@msruag Ай бұрын
@@hieudo4460 isn't it obv that they meant y as [j] or [ʝ]? 💀japanese romaji uses y for [j] so the elaboration is there, wikipedia says yonaguni originally had [ʝ] which fortified into [d], and semivowels can also be fortified as has happened in gaelic

Although I am partly Asian myself and know the "mainstream" Asian languages, the Yonaguni language has a positive kind of mystery, which is indescribably beautiful, like the background melody choice of yours, dear Andy. And thanks to the speaker. Arigatougozaimashita❣️😍❤️

I think it is as close to Chinese as Arabic would be lol 😂 Don't get confused by the Chinese characters, those are used to represent meaning, not the sound (or the etymology) of words... For instance: 貴方 could 基本ally 書rite 英語ish like 之is and still 読ad it as 普通al 英語ish, with 絶対tely 無 中国se 影響 何soever (you could basically write English like this and still read it as normal English, with absolutely no Chinese influence whatsoever) That's basically how Japonic languages work for the most part
