You are so right about the value of allowing kids to help with cooking! My daughter actually included her cooking/baking adventures she experienced as a child in her college applications. She included not only the practical knowledge she gained, ie how to cook for herself, measurements, conversions, etc, but also the generational and cultural importance that comes from sharing food experiences. I am an in-betweener…I have grown children and no grandchildren (yet!), so it just warms my heart to see you and your kids cooking and baking together! I know it can be much easier to just do it yourself, so kudos to you for making these experiences happen for your kids!

Lots of yummy meals! I do the same thing with the tomato paste! I spoon it into a plastic bag and flatten it out and freeze it to use as needed. It's works perfectly. The sushi cake looked so good! Love to see your children. You're a great Mommy and don't get flustered.

I keep a tube of paste in the fridge for when I just need like a tablespoon of paste in a recipe. We eat what we call Rosatella sauce. Half Alfredo, half red sauce with penne. I love those packages of soup. We usually make all our soups from scratch but once in a while I will make the package soup. The seasonings and aroma are heavenly.

I love cooking with kids. Thanks for sharing as it takes me back to when my boys were little. My youngest always wanted to be the one to "hatch the eggs" LOL. The simple meals are inspiring and look delicious. As for summer eating, I like everything cold. We have no A/C so what keeps the house cool is good. I do my cooking early or on the coolest day of the week. I will look forward to seeing you in the magazine!! So exciting!

Soup definitely! It was so nice seeing the younger boys helping mom in the kitchen - cooking is definitely not just for girls! Lucky future wives will be snatching up these handsome “prep boys!!!” And such good sharing - with 5 kids mommy has to keep the peace or it’s bedlam! Some of my fondest memories are helping my grandma in the kitchen! In. The ‘60’s and ‘70’s people expressed their opinion on a boy cooking, but she didn’t care and just told my uncles “if you don’t want to eat what he made, starve!!!” No one starved!

I usually avoid hot soups during the summer except for this corn chowder my mom makes a great corn chowder soup but my favorite summer soup is gazpacho soup (especially watermelon topped off feta and mint and a little blasmic glaze delicious)

Great meals! I love the idea of the tomato paste in the freezer this way. Awesome! You might try that sushi "cake" using thinly sliced or peels of cucumber and thinly sliced avocado. The reason I say this, is I tried it both ways and the strips ended up being less messy while eating. The diced cucumber and avocado kind of fell off our sushi cake. Maybe that was just us, but we did prefer it in strips. Take care and bless you all!
