I think one of the biggest problems with YL and what caused it to fall flat, was that Playtonic clearly had an idea in mind of how they perceived players would go about playing the game as opposed to how people actually ended up playing it. I'm of the opinion that they expected players would play through each world consecutively, not expanding any of them at first, which would net them Flight, that they could then go and use to make exploring the expanded levels a lot smoother. Instead, most people just immediately expanded a world as soon as they could so that they could actually collect everything in its entirety before moving on, give or take the handful of things that require returning to a previous world with a later learned move, which makes the worlds feel extremely expansive, easy to get lost in, and ultimately too big.
@TheRiddler6129 Жыл бұрын
That's what I did. I expanded every world as soon as I could.
@kyojamett58336 ай бұрын
Same for me, I mean, since we were expecting a banjo sequel, in banjo you could have all collectibles in just one single play of the level (as long as you have all the moves) so I can't blame anyone for trying the same strategy. Yeah worlds are too big for me, and there are so many pagies 😅 I know that is the reasons here are less levels than banjo but over 100 pagies per level seems quite a lot

I put it down years ago (was distracted by the kingdom hearts collections in 2017 I think) It's such a good game! Also the 64 tonic is amazing ! Can't believe I put it down in 2017 after the first couple worlds. It's so good !

The impossible lair is really great too for a 2d platformer. But I wouldn't even try to attempt The impossible lair at the end, it was a bad touch to a great game. The impossible lair is literally impossible

I played this game a few years ago. I really liked it, even though the beginning of the game was a bit too slow. I agree with the game's critics that the world can be a bit too big; but I remember often enjoying the larger scale and exploration, even if it could be a bit much at times. However, due to the massive scale of everything, I could not at all imagine 100%ing the game; but for a casual playthrough, I really enjoyed it.

I've just currently given this game a new chance, after YL and the Impossible Lair was in sale on ps5. (I've already played YL on Xbox, YLatiL on Switch and Xbox) and I have to say, Yooka Laylee is a good game. But some mechanics are simply outdated such as non skippable dialogues, no map, etc. But I'm looking forward for its remake Yooka Replaylee. I think it'll be a good remake because Playtonic listened to us. Yooka Laylee and the impossible Lair is a good spiritual successor to the Donkey Kong Country-Series.

*I love collectathon games and downloaded several emulators on both of my phones to play all of my old platformer and adventure/collectathon games from Nintendo and PlayStation. I got to this video trying to find a way to run download and Yooka-Laylee onto my phone. I'm downloading and installing Twilight Princess onto my other phone right now. I hope Yooka-Laylee gets a sequel and I if only Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie got one too.* 🤩

I have an idea on how to make Yooka different from Banjo, it has to do with real world chameleons. In real life chameleons don't change colour to blend in, they do it to show how they're feeling. He could weaponize his emotions a la Super Princess Peach This can be a gameplay and character aspect Laylee could make Yooka emotionally grounded when things get too much.

You say that there is a sequel coming... You mean Impossible Lair or a Yooka Laylee 2? Because if so, that's awesome! I quite liked Yooka Laylee, I 100%-ed 4 times in total but yeah, loads of flaws and kinda deserves the mixed reviews (but not the hate though)

17:00 The point of this mechanic is to not overwhelm the player with a giant level to explore, you start with a smaller level and then you expand it later, but if you don't like this mechanic you can just ignore it and expand the level before you even enter it the first time, I really don't understand why you're complaining about something you can completely ignore
@Vaguer_Weevil11 ай бұрын
Also you're inside a world contained within a book, you return the missing pages to expand the world that was written inside it. That alone makes it more interesting to me as far as progression goes.

Every time I play the original Yooka-Laylee, I can't help but think "this is so close, but there's *_something_* missing". I still can't figure out what it is, but the game lacks that special thing. The more I think about it, the more I start to think that it's us that have changed. We grew up, and now we can no longer hear the the sleigh bell. (personally, I think it's plenty fun and fairly charming but doesn't really bring anything new to the table. it's just yeah like you said, platformers are an inherently limited genre. After I beat it, the obvious take-away for me was "that was fun, but it turns out there's a reason why they don't make many of these games anymore! I have little desire to ever play that again". Which is a real shame, because it's so clear that the people that made YL are crazy talented... so if they can't do the genre justice, who could?!) oh also great video bro! Fantastic as usual :) I dig the 'award show' thing at the end, that's a good idea. It's interesting, and it will probably be good for generating good discussion and that's both fun and the algorithm likes it [and I want people to find your channel dammit]. Thank you for including the part of about the mine cart being a nightmare to control, I thought I was just getting bad at video games lol

The level design of Cashino overall was my least favorite and I hated the Rextro arcade in that world. I only did it once to get the first pagie, and I could not at all beat Kartos’ track and then I found out it triggers the final boss of the world so I just skipped it when I felt I got enough pagies from it.

Technically, Yooka-Laylee already got their redemption arc when they switched gears to be more like Donkey Kong Country in Impossible Lair, but another take on a collectathon would be nice. My issue with the game is that it feels like it's trying to be bigger, but doesn't account for how fun it is to have to travel through all that added extra space. I got to the second world before I just lost interest and put the game down, and I was a backer of this game! Side note: the OST of this game is another low point in my eyes. It's not BAD by any means, but half the time it feels like there's little to no energy in it. I don't know if Grant Kirkhope was given the proper direction or what, but even the soundtrack is a miss for me.

It seems too "arcadey" compared to BK. Call me crazy but BK took itself more serious than this. The seemingly random expansion mechanic and other things wouldn't fit. BK hit that sweet spot of being whimsical while still hinting at some degree of consistency. If BK felt like a dream then this looks more akin to a fever dream. If I'd wake up in BK I'd feel cozy while wanting to explore. If I'd wake up in the places I've seen in this vid, like the casino, I'd search for a way out ASAP while trying to avoid a panic attack.

Men banjo tooie really blow my mind in a bad way after enjoying kazooi I just can’t go trough of tooie I just end wasting so much time in tooie messing around without doing nothing the world are big so much bigger but that is not the problem the problem is banjo, he is slow ( in a gameplay perspective) but the kazooi was build around it but tooie you really feel any step all this Make the game feel overwhelming alongside with these inmortal frustrating enemies but yooka fix all of this problem in the fist half of the game anything is straight forward and playing as yooka you feel faster and more mobile than banjo I do think that banjo and yooka even sharing genre yooka is not as “banjo threie” as anyone could imagine

I hated Yooka Laylee because I felt like it was causeless. In Banjo Kazooie and Tooie you were trying to defeat a evil witch that took your sister or killed your friend. This game has a guy who stole your book. It just doesn't work as a cause to get me involved in the world.

It is kind of dead in the water. It seems to have ended up like Mighty Number 9 as far as anticipated games that kind of disappointed went. But it's not really a bad game on the same level as that so that's unfortunate. They tried again with Impossible Lair, which worked a lot better but ultimately, I kind of think the character itself just didn't catch on more than anything. Never quite liked the design. Even in the actual era this style of game come from, a character had to be so appealing to take off. Look at Croc for instance, or the Pandemonium games. The character that really stood out had more attitude, I kind of get a feel from this game of I'm playing as "not Banjo". Good review though. You're keeping the franchise alive single-handedly! ha

This game is uncreative garbage, and no one can relate to a weird looking lizard that's accurate to life instead of slightly humanised like banjo, crash, conker, spyro that gives it that extra spark. Plus it will never have the nostalgia and barriers to own like games used to were unless you were rich you only ever had a few games and had to wear them out before getting more games and banjo mario etc used to be hard to get unless you lived in the city
