She was drinking brandy and not eating ? She was incredibly thin
@glamdolly306 ай бұрын
@@kathleenmaclachlan1541 In fact alcoholics are often thin, because they typically skip meals - they get their calories from booze. Sadly Yootha was a chronic alcoholic, and by the end of her life was drinking at least a bottle of brandy a day. In the last series of 'George and Mildred' her weight loss is plainly obvious. Like many performers Yootha suffered from nerves, and used the confidence-boosting qualities of booze as a crutch. But alcohol is a false friend - and it's a slippery slope to dependency and serious health issues. Yootha's alcoholism took her life at just 53 - utterly tragic.

@@stevenoneill7166 I'll have to check some day, but it went out at about 14:00 to 14:30 weekdays in my ITV (Thames) region. It's a mystery to me why they got quite possibly the most boring man Tyne Tees could find (from Southern, in this case) to front it when they already had Tony Cook.

@@Crazy1Clive I'm not sure Cook would have been well-received nationally. His accent was "interesting" - Northern RP, which tended to get more Geordie sounding when he got more animated (despite him coming from North Yorkshire!).

I recently read a bio about Yootha. She came to loathe playing Mildred and even said seeing the name 'Mildred' on her scripts made her mad by the final series. Her and Brian were hounded by fans so she became very reclusive. I was surprised to hear only Brian of the Man about the house cast attended her funeral, unless the author of the bio was mistaken? Richard O'Sullivan was away filming Dick Turpin on location so his partner Tessa Wyatt went on his behalf but no mention of Sally or Paula.

Make it make sense… they were cast together as George & Mildred in Man About The House before having their own series. How does she think they “were pulled out of a hat” for the George & Mildred show?
@glamdolly306 ай бұрын
Thank you! Her story totally baffled me. 'George and Mildred' was a spin off from hit sitcom 'Man About the House' which Yooth and Brian had originally starred in (in supporting roles) and which obviously preceded it! So in fact they would know the show titles/character names 'George and Mildred' and 'The Ropers', as they had played them for years in 'Man About the House'. This makes no sense at all.
@virginiacharlotte70076 ай бұрын
Two guesses: 1/ maybe Man about the House had two different working titles as Yootha and Brian were being cast for it separately by either the producers or the writers. Then the focus of the became more about the house sharing trio and the name of the series changed; or, more sadly, 2/ this interview was apparently recorded only two months before Yootha died from alcoholism related liver failure and she may have been a bit confused. ??

When I was growing up in the 70s this was my favourite comedy, George and Mildred, in the late 70s early 80s Yootha Joyce and Brian Murphy came over to where I live and did a summer show. When is it finished I was up at the airport and I saw her buying some flowers so me and my sister went over to her and said, “please may we have your autograph” She looked at me and my sister and said, “sorry darling if I give you my autograph, everybody else will want one and I’ll be late” We were the only ones around and it would have taken her less than 30 seconds to given it to us. From that day onwards I couldn’t stand her and I have never watched any repeat of the show which I used to love.
