I picked up this York 100 vise for $10. I cleaned off all the crud, grease, and dirt with some varsol. I used my die grinder and wire wheel attachment to clean off the rust and finally painted and re-greased the whole thing. I made sure to tape off the critical areas to keep them clean. The jaws were pretty gummed up with aluminum but they cleaned up very nicely as well! This vise is sure to last another lifetime!
I only used a couple tools in this video...
Nitrile gloves - amzn.to/2kFq8Bc
Grease: amzn.to/2rhTMPG
Wire brush (die grinder attachment): amzn.to/2JObjGL
Paint Stipper: amzn.to/2Ks19xA
Die Grinder: amzn.to/2GNa7EJ
Metal drift/punch set: amzn.to/2YHSL1U

Nice restoration, cool vice. Surprised you didn’t highlight the logos but impressed you masked all the touching faces. Possibly a file to run through the jaw screws to tidy them up but overall a vice I would be happy to own. Keep up the good work!
@PatonHaus
@PatonHaus 5 жыл бұрын
It looked original when I got it and the logos were painted red, so I went with that. The jaw screws were in rough shape and I didn't show their clean-up but I did file the heads and clean up the slot quite a bit. Maybe I'll look for new screws next time and save myself the trouble. Thanks for commenting!

Good vice, a total steal at 10 bucks! Gread job restoring it, it looks superb when you're done but I was disappointed at the end when we could see that the screws hadn't been tidied up and the holes in the jaws still had rust in them. Both minor points but 9/10 instead of 10/10.
@PatonHaus
@PatonHaus 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. I didn't show the screws as much as I should have but I swear they were much much worse when I started. High humidity and sitting for a few days between filming is the rust culprit. None the less, thanks for commenting!

Thank you! The Wilton is a work horse through and through, there’s a big chunk busted off below one of the jaws so it’ll need some invasive surgery to bring it up to my usual standards.

I have York 150mm and York 80mm. Larger one is very tough. Smaller is also hi-quality, but I use it as mobile unit attached to a piece of wood when working outside. I can step or sit on that piece of wood and use is at stable holder for angle grinding, cutting, welding etc. This is not restoration, rather quick cosmetic re-paint. Not even proper primer base was used. But it is vise at the end, not a sportscar, so it does not matter. Just keep the main parts lubricated and it will work for several generations.
@PatonHaus
@PatonHaus Жыл бұрын
Thank you! In my experience using a primer only worsens the paint adhesion, especially with cast iron. Putting oil-based paint directly onto the cast iron allows the paint to grip into the pores and imperfections in the casting, resulting in a very tough paint job. Applying primer first effectively smooths out the cast iron porosity and provides a smooth surface for the top coat, which is typically not a good thing. Different strokes for different folks though! 👍

Spray painting a York 100? shame on you, take the dirt off, maybe a wire brush and give it to your kids(and they will give it to their kids). Also, you didn't actually take it apart, you missed the rear plate. (christ, spray paint on vise like that) Shame.
@PatonHaus
@PatonHaus 5 ай бұрын
I’m not sure which rear plate you mean, but the whole thing was taken apart, maybe you can review and expand on that a bit more. Also, the paint is oil based so it’s really no different than brushing on a similar type of paint, plus aerosol paint tends to go on smoother and level out faster. That paint took ages to dry though, really stunk up the place. I still have this little guy and use it all the time, thanks for dropping by 👍
