York Minster is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe.
The Cathedral is located on the north edge of the old town in a beautiful setting.
Right next to the church you'll find Deans Park, a tranquil patch of greenery ideal for taking a break - maybe sit on a bench or spread out on the grass and relax for a while.
Built on the site of the first Roman settlement, the church owes its origins to an early Saxon king, Edwin, who married a Christian queen and converted to Christianity in the year 627. To commemorate his baptism he built a small wooden church on the site of the Minster. Much later a series of larger stone churches were constructed, one after the other, including a vast Norman church in the Romanesque style, and then finally, the Minster.

I've been to England 9 times and every time I make sure I stop at York. It is probably the most interesting cities in Great Britain. The Minster is a must.

July is the best month - nice weather, long daylight, less crowds, better price - because locals head to Spain and south for holiday. Just to correct your commentary on your excellent video. You say incorrectly that the Archbishop of York is the second most important person in the Church of England. That honour goes to the Archbishop of Canterbury who comes second only after Her Majesty the Queen who is the head of the Church of England placing the Archbishop of York in third position. The Minster costs an average of £23,000 a day to run so the comment below about the entrance fee ripping people off is way off the mark. Were it not for supporters of the Minster like myself and thousands of others who donate money regularly which by the way subsidises tourists entrance fees, the real cost of entry would be much higher. This is a working house of God for the benefit of all who enter it's hallowed walls, not a museum for the curious but all are welcome to visit for peace, prayer and reflection and to enjoy and learn the history of this glorious building and hopefully to benefit spiritually. Also those wishing to enter for public worship or private prayer may do so free of charge.

Thank you so much Martin for your thoughtful commentary. I got the bishop position off by a notch, pardon. You are so right that the entry fee is reasonable and necessary, like in a museum when the ticket only covers part of the real cost. It is an ancient structure that needs a lot of TLC, for example after the recovery from the great fire -- today you don't notice any damages. It is in pristine condition.

if you have never been to York minster 10 or 15 pounds is not a lot to pay but if like me ive been going for years and when I got there this year they wanted 15pound to get in I will not be going again im not going to pay that money so I hope people do the same I think that they are ripping of people who go a lot and I know you can get a season ticket for big money I live with my memorys of the good old days and let mugs pay there extortionate price

I hear you, it is not cheap, but they do need to spend a lot on upkeep. If you have never been inside, it is worth it. I was shocked, many years ago, when I had to pay for the first time to get into a church, St Paul's, but now it is more common. One can still enter for prayer at no charge during certain hours.

York used to be free not so long back- you only needed to pay for a visit under the cathedral to look at the earlier Roman structures underneath. I was surprised at the time that Salisbury cathedral charged £5.00. £10.00 seems like the usual "Take the piss out of American visitors" tax. I feel deeply embarrassed how London constantly charges ludicrous prices to foreign visitors- it seems to have moved further north now. It's the British taxpayer that often funds the repairs to these buildings- then they charge us again...!

Look at it this way: most of the inhabitants of the UK aren't religious or practising Christians. If you are, then you can go and pray at Evensong for free. Most people wandering around the Minster are there simply as tourists, to goggle at and admire an amazing building where the upkeep is thousands of pounds per day and to find entertainment for a good hour or so. If you go to any other tourist site like nearby Castle Howard then you have to pay an arm and a leg. Why do people moan about paying to visit an equivalent architectural wonder - a religious site - when they're not even church-goers?

I visited this beautiful cathedral one year ago. I think is a little expensive. I came from a small city of Spain and you have to pay 6 euros to walk into the cathedral. I think the cathedral of York it is much longer and, perhaps you can see more things, but i think my city´s cathedral is more beautiful , but smaller.
