Man does this bring back memories. My buddy and I went every weekend to Island Dragway and Raceway Park in NJ. We got autographs and talked with Grumpy,Dyno Don, Big Daddy and many more. I had a 66 GTO and my buddy had a 67 Road Runner and he raced a 1932 C/A injected Chevy powered Ford. He had trouble keeping the front wheels on the ground. I'm 60 and drive a Mercedes now, but I've got the pictures and 8mm from the track. My buddy still had the 32 Duce and it's streetable. Thanks again!

I know I'm replying to a comment that's 9 years old but you mention 8mm film from the 60's. I'm trying to locate some video of my uncles 1964 Comet campaigned as "The Hairy Canary" in the mid 60's. They ran B/MP at a lot of the east coast tracks. Anybody have some video?? He has a short appearance in the video "Atco 1960's Drag Racing - It's a Sport, Baby" that's on KZbin.

My Dad used to run against funny car legend Bruce Larson, USA 1 Camaro at York, they both drove '53 Rocket 88 Olds 303 4 barrels., the car to beat in those days.

Thanks for the post David. You and your Dad have some bragging rights there. Bruce was and is one tough racer. Thanks for checking out our KZbin channel.

@@amos6013 I'll check it out your video. My dad sold the Olds when I and my siblings came along and bought a family Merc sedan. This was the mid-1950s and Bruce was young then late teens, my Dad could never beat him, always said Bruce's car had a higher gear ration, better in the 1/4 mile. I spent a lot of time at York and Boiling Springs as a kid, my neighbor Buck Myers ran a C/MP '57 Chevy "Snoopy" and later a '57 Vette gasser, the short lived "Glass Casket". I remember a powder blue '55 Chevy, "the Blue Light Bandit" ran by a bunch black guys from Harrisburg. I grew up near Linglestown, Pa, home of "the Linglestown Leadfoot" Maynard Yingst, sprint car driver and Larson's crew chief. Chris Lang used to run his "Malco Super Vette" gasser out of Linglestown also. Good days, where are my earplugs.

Notice there are lights at ground level all the way down the track. This is because York is actually an airport. In fact, I am a professional pilot and in 2018 I flew my corporate jet into York and had to hang out at the airport for several hours waiting for my boss to return. Since I am also a life long drag racer, I asked the locals where this famous Dragway was that I SO recalled as a kid. They said it was the York airport, and that I was standing on hallowed ground. And so I was. But sadly, other than dozens of photos of the racing there in days gone by, I really couldn’t see any signs that the airport was used as a drag strip.
