I grew up in the US, specifically New England, and my best friend's Dad was an ex-pat from South London. He fashioned up hearty British meals regularly to feed us after jumping down stairs on skateboards for a few hours every day after school, and I developed a deep love for meat pies, fish and chips, a Sunday roast dinner and British comedy. We'd all sit around the television with fold-out tables between 7-8pm and watch Monty Python, Fawlty Towers or Black Adder, depending on what the local provider was offering for BBC reruns that week.

In Japan there are a lot of older confiserie shops, like the Gorobe-ame Honpo (Fukushima) Gorobe-ame Honpo is located in Aizuwakamatsu City in western Fukushima. Its signature sweets are jelly-like and made of glutinous rice. It's believed that the shop opened around the year 1180, and its treats are made using the same recipe that was enjoyed by the Minamoto Clan general, Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune, in 1189. It is presently in its 38th generation of ownership.
