In our opening episode, Ben travels to the Northeast-the home of Dracula, fishermen, and the elusive and legendary chicken parmo.
In Whitby, he joins a crew of fishermen venturing out onto the North Sea, before taking his catch of crab to the beach for a picnic. After lunch, Ben heads inland to join a pair of food bloggers-the Parmo Hunters-on a taste tour of the region's local delicacies. The night ends in a bus shelter, and Ben is left with a new appreciation for the power of food in connection to geography.

Such great memories. Saffa moved up from London to live in Stokesley for 4 years. Love the people, the pubs, the countryside, however it was the weather that finally drove me to leave and head to Singapore. Red lion Blakey Ridge for the best pint of Old Peculiar together with a steak and ales pie after a morning of trail running. Good times and wonderful memories. Best part of the UK is the north east.

As another ex-patriated Northerner (from Scarborough, NOT Whitby...bluddy ell) I am enjoying this series immensely. It also demonstrates the everyday humour and personality of the North and of Britain as a whole that often seems lost in the ever increasing outside influences on society and culture here, for example: "I've turned him round so he won't see" *continues failing to kill other crab*.

Just like Germany, the UK has some real gems in it's cuisine but has a pretty negative image. I don't think this series is doing anything to alter that image.

River Tyne was once so abundant in salmon that locals became bored of the now middle to upper class dinner favourite. Sometimes I feel these vice docs focussing on specific regions are trying to prosper the notion of all people in that area being like that, I'm not really a typical northerner my parents moved up from London and i have a generally middle class outlook, personally i don't think that this area is any worse or better than other areas in terms of ingredients and quality, go to any farmers market in Newcastle and there is some quality nosh to be had. The one thing is deprivation, a friend of mine was a primary school teacher up in Blyth on Northumberland coast, he said some of kids were very malnourished and had little knowledge if vegetables, breakfast was haribo and dinner chips.

Uprated. I LOVED the North of England, and the South of Scotland! I was FINE with the food in both countries, since 1980, many times, mostly for pleasure but a little bit for work. I just stuck to local specialties and game. No problem! Crab fishing by boat is horribly hard and dangerous. Seafood and shellfish, any sea or water products, in fact, are generally way too toxic to eat or too stressed to harvest, however, so I reluctantly avoid them. (But do not exclude them. Depends.) The parmo is, at this point, after living in France so long from the USA via Italy, too gloopy for me likely, but I certainly would try it! I really like doing some British and Scottish dishes here, making my own pastry, getting the gnarly supplies and cooking them all down. Fun clip. I think the North of England is a bit like the North of France, which has a bad reputation. Undeserved. I can really recommend the Northeast of England as a visit destination. Go look, study the history, behave, and try some things! Very fun clip, thank you.

paucceri Yes, there are also a lot of superstitions about boats, ships, water, the sea, et c. Some things are considered highly inauspicious. Last year I read a rather long piece on some of them, and also, the cost and trouble you have to go to to rename a vessel. Otherwise, the sea will not recognize her and will reclaim her quickly. If the TITANIC was, indeed, her sister ship, badly damaged in a mishap, then refitted, and disguised, not only was their structural damage, but the new, fake, cheating ship was doomed, if you believe superstition. At the very least, it's pretty rude to do what he did, in and of itself. At least to document it.

Not tryna gatekeep, but the Parmo is a Middlesbrough thing, not a teeside thing. Yeah, it got popular around teeside, but the OG parmos, the experimentation & improvements in ingredients; quality, innovation etc etc will always be a Boro/Middlesbrough thing. They legit started on Linthrope Road. I was born & grew up literally the side street off of Linthorpe Road. Not being biased (well maybe a bit), but the best Parmos are obviously gunnu come from Boro!! Very disappointed that Parmos across Middlesbrough weren’t covered; it’s legit the birthplace of the Parmo 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️
