The tenor has a very nice hum to it! Sounds surprising fine!

It's a modern Gillett bell! The back six are actually OK - really, it's the two poorly tuned trebles that let them down so badly
@benjaminvallejo6695 Жыл бұрын
the treble and 2nd almost sound the same note 1. 1438.5Hz 2. 1391.0Hz so the treble is flat you already described it so the tuning estimations would be 1♭,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 if not correct you provide a estimation if you want

Pretty much - the 1 and 2 do sound pretty much the same note. Whilst the treble is an octave above the tenor, it's flat and bells 2-5 are sharp, an unhealthy combination which leads to the unusual sound.

@@simonbellringer yea the 6 is also kinda flat but tuning will make them more desirable to ring etc

@@benjaminvallejo6695 The tuning has happened and the bells rehung ready for ringing. The 4th here has been retired and replaced with a new bell - you will notice the old 4th struck C#, but the replacement bell is in D! Essentially, the treble was about right but the middle six bells were out (and probably got more wildly out the further towards the light end one got). I am looking forward to ringing on the revamped bells and seeing the difference for myself.

Nice video Simon but they do about strange, but isn't that the appeal that ringing has, quirky rings bells that take on a life of their own

Thank you Steve, good to hear from you. Oh yes, they are definitely unique - one of the more interesting rings going but that's what makes ringing ringing, not just another music-box Taylor eight. Characterful is definitely the word!..

@@simonbellringer I do like charming music box rings and Whitechapel did it best with chirpy wedding bell rings I love Taylor 8s like Westbury but there quirky rings fascinate me As much as I love Simpson tuned Taylor 12s I love the classic sound and rawness of St Paul's, to me THE LONDON SOUND, the sound of victory over Hiltler To retune them to modern standards would be sacrilege in my view.

I mean for their age and the lack of fine machining back in the day they could honestly sound worse?
@simonbellringer2 жыл бұрын
The old bells, definitely - and I have rung on far worse (the back 6 shown at the end are fairly reasonable). The new bells, notably the trebles, were cast when modern tuning methods were known and are not good bells... they could be worse. They could also be a lot better!

@@simonbellringer Wonder who will do the retuning when they can get the funds? From what I have seen on Taylor's Facebook lately They really make older bells sound amazing

The work is being undertaken by Whites of Appleton, which includes extensive tuning. The oldest bells are not actually the worst - the bells cast in 1935 are by a considerable margin, wide of the mark.
