I have been wanting to make this video for some time now and now I have bought a new power generator (the EcoFlow Pro) I thought that now is the perfect time to talk about off grid power in the van.
I did get a little carried away talking about the battery bank though as I am a little excited about my new purchase.

Useful video thanks. We live on a Narrowboat and are just starting a camper van build, so having a portable power supply we can use in either is ideal. It would be a backup on the boat, but a primary power supply in the van. Cheers!

Great info as I prefer wherever I venture to wild camp. I have always wanted a big power bank which would last a week or two that could be charged when on the move. Sadly with price of fuel at present my plans are on hold, was planning the North Coast 500 for the fourth time, west coast is brilliant. Thanks for the heads up on the seat shelf the other week the web site clearly shows access to the handbrake is fine so will treat myself to one in the near future. Got a barn door awning today from Kiravans and fitted today, perfect fit up and down in no time. Keep up the good work look forward to the Friday vlog's Bill Kelly

It’s a cool gadget! I’m also having battery anxiety about an upcoming off grid festival weekend. I’ve seen Just Kampers have a new foldable windscreen solar panel that plugs straight into 12v socket and can charge your leisure battery and considering it, but that is £299 so one of these is another option and maybe more versatile for other applications

Well Colin, now you've done it. This is the most expensive KZbin video I've EVER watched. Just ordered the EcoFlow Pro, as I'm mid way through upgrading my van (VW T5) for what I hope will be at least another 5 years or so of use. I've just had solar put on the roof, and I spend lots of time off grid, so hopefully the EcoFlow will complement the on board solar. (Gulp.) Anyway, thanks for the discount code, which helped marginally!

Love you channel first of all!! So.. for day vanners or people who want heat on the cheap I've done a few tests with the power unit I have, ecoflow max.. Going to describe this in simple terms... use heated blanket with a £10 inverter when your driving in the bed and under the blankets= warm bed, assuming the eco-river is charged when you leave home, that will sort your bed out, zero ecoflow impact. The electric blanket runs at25watts if you want to keep it on... Next.. when camping use the river with a 300w oil radiator (700w on high power/300 low) and thermostat the baby on low to med, this adds hours in a small space, in a van this will do 10 hrs on eco river.....get a decent solar when parked and charge off 12v when moving. May do a video, not a youtuber...go for coffee in hotels and charge ecoflow

Good choice going with Eco vs the Jacked off with spending money on marketing vs actual product - we have a Delta for our caravan and my home brew pumped cleaning sessions - on the caravan it’ll run the micro/tv’s/fridge/bean to cup coffee ebikes w etc etc and toaster. - not all at once mind but life OG is more or less life at home and we can top it up via genset in under a hour most times or 90 mins to 100% while its still running gear - solar i got 240w of panels but not convinced unless its high summer

I get it, I added a 160 kw flexi panel to the roof of my van over the winter, it has so far, ensured that my battery holds up - even in the darkest days of winter with short light cycles it would still power the fridge. I didn't push it to try the diesel heater, even though we I have used it occasionally. If you are worried about battery drain starting up your diesel heater, the hire van I had a few years ago was fine provided you started the heater with the engine running, and then once the van was warm then switch it off, set the timer and go to bed.

Amazing and helpful video. I'm looking at not having a leisure battery and simply using the Ecolfow, 160W solar panel on the roof and then the odd charge from mains when at home. But hoping with leaving the house on a full charge and with the solar panel, I could be off grid for a considerable amount of time. My question is, would this work if i had a 12V camper van fridge (Novacool) for example constantly drawing small amounts and obviously the solar panel on inputting during the day only? Trying to get away from the full 'camper van electical system/set up'. Thanks in advance for the help.
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures Жыл бұрын
Sounds like a great set up bud ... It all depends on the draw of the fridge bud, I've noticed having had a 12v fridge, that they do draw a lot of power (more so than my current dometic CRE50 does) so I'm not sure how long it would last. It would draw more power in the warmer months as it would have to work harder. What I generally tend to do is trial my appliances before I leave in the van, see how long they last and then I know how to be canny with it when out in the van... Remember, solar would have to be good and you'd have to be in a good spot to get as much solar as you can :)

I seriously need to have a think about my power. I have solar and a leisure battery... but nowhere to read it as they are hidden under a shelf that is hard to get to. Thanks very much for your videos, they are always really well explained and helpful. We've got pretty much the same electrical setup in our van and I'm looking at adding a power station like the EcoFlow. I just wanted to check with you on how you have wired your solar panel. Is the output from the solar just split into two so it's connected to the EcoFlow and the Ctek at the same time? Does this affect how each of them charge at all? I couldn't work out if they would fight with each other and the solar panel as they both have MPPT controllers in there. Thanks again for the great content :)
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ben, thanks so much. So in short, each MPPT controller will deal with the load going in separately. It would only cause problems if there were two MPPT controllers in line fighting with each other (nothing bad would happen, it just wouldn't be very good 😂) so Black and red from the solar panel to the splitter, then a black and red off the splitter to the EcoFlow (the cable it comes with) then the other splitter goes to the CTEK - once one is full, the full power of the solar panel will charge one item with more watts, but if the batteries are both flat, it will (should) split the charge 50/50 Hope this helps

I would be thinking £700 for the eco flow £120 for 120amp leisure battery, and you could get 120 amp lithium battery for £900 that you can discharge to 80 plus % and with the ctek charger can put 50% power back in the lithium in less than a hour.
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures 2 жыл бұрын
True, but then I'd have to buy a 2kw inverter, wiring and then wire it all up... Then it's forever in the van. This way I can take the battery out and use it anywhere ;) horses for courses though bud there are LOADS of ways of doing it...

Great review! Quick question, when using the folding solar panel, do you leave it unattended (eg if you go off for a walk or a paddle board etc) or do you always need to be there whilst it’s charging in case someone steals it? I’m on the point of buying solar for the roof of our van but I completely get that we would need to park so that it gets the best sun and moving the van to follow the sun would be a pain, especially with a drive away awning!! Thank you :-)

An interesting review, good to watch. I'm doing the same regarding the split on the solar cables. Have you got switching the power from the Ecoflow to the leisure battery and vice versa or are both getting power at the same time? I always have a double switch in the supply from the panel and this would add another into the mix. Thanks
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures

Awesome mate, I don't have a switch to go between the two as they both have MPPT built in, so when one is charged the other will take the most power. A switch would be good though to direct it to one or the other. Maybe one that switches from one to the other and also both if need be...

Hi Ya - Can I pick your brain again. I now have the new EcoFlow RIVER Pro - very impressed with it and really grateful for your video explaining the product. We have a panel van - Globecar Fiat Ducato. We already have a dealer installed 110w solar panel which is wired to a 'Duo Battery Solar Controller'. My understanding is that this works on a priority basis and first charges the leisure battery and then the engine battery. I would like to now have the option to charge the Ecoflow directly from the solar panel. Am I right in thinking that I should have MC 4 cable splitters (as per your video) put into each of the two wires coming down from the solar panel (ahead of the solar controller) in order to in effect create a spur using the Ecoflow supplied solar charging cable to charge the eco flow as and when I want to charge it? Also if this is correct, would you know if the EcoFlow was charging this way, would any power from the solar panel continue to go to the solar controller via the splitter at the same time so as to keep charging the leisure battery and engine battery. I have watched your other earlier videos today (solar panel installation and Beauden charger) and believe that you have wired your solar directly to the Beauden/Ecoflow which is not quite how I want my set up in view of how it is already arranged. Hope this makes sense Cheers again - Many thanks Simon

Enjoying the content colin. Is there a more efficient way of charging the leisire batt from the eco flow? Are u charging from the 12v output or 240v? Just invested in some renogy gear, 100ah lipo4 batt and dual dc/solar charger. Have yet to invest in the solar gear... good point re tree cover. Might consider a portable or removable roof system. Currently running a waeco cf11 small fridge only plus phone/ipad device charging. Got less than a day out of a 24ah battery some hoping new setup without solar lasts for a wkend.

Hey buddy thank you, im guessing without the inverter running on the EcoFlow it would be less power consumption and more efficient to use the 12v output, I just haven't found a suitable way of doing it yet, it would be a lot slower though. I have an updated video (the most recent upgrade video I've done) where I've changed things up a bit.. I now have a 100ah Renogy lithium leisure battery now and it's brilliant... Been off grid for 4 days with the family recently and with solar it's been great!

So how does the system work? You have solar to a splitter which charges river pro and leisure battery. You also have a 240v battery charger which you connect the river pro to should you need to top up the leisure battery? Picking my van up Friday so interested in getting off grid power.
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures Жыл бұрын
Hiya buddy yes exactly that.. The battery charger (that works on 240v) is usually plugged in to the mains when on EHU, but I unplug it from there and plug it directly in to the River Pro to help top up the battery if its running low etc. In a nutshell... EHU input on a campsite goes to my consumer unit (inside the van) The consumer unit goes to 2 x plug sockets we use in the van and 1 x plug socket that the battery charger plugs in to. The splitter sends the power from the solar panel to the EcoFlow and to the Leisure Battery - Although its only a 100w pannel (I am getting a higher capacity one soon) it does help top the battery up. I hope this helps... Enjoy your van when it arrives

Great video! Thanks. Quick question… what cable are you using to get from your solar setup in the van to the input of the EcoFlow? I watched the video and saw you talk about the splitter for the Beaudens generator…do you use the same thing for this? Is there a specific cable that goes from the splitter to the input of the EcoFlow? OR are you just using 12V from your van to the EcoFlow? (I wondered about just using the 12V outputs from my van leisure battery setup to go to the EcoFlow if I buy one…) Thanks in advance!

Hey Matt, Yes I use the splitter for the River Pro too, it comes with a lead that goes from the MC4 to the ExoFlow so you can just plug it straight in..

Tomorrow I'm getting the pop top fitted on my T5.1 Kombi and then electrics at the end of June. We've got a couple of trips lined up with no hook and am wondering whether to get the solar panel first or generator. Which would you say was the more essential. Can't really afford to get both at the same time

Hi, you didn't explain why you choose your ecoflow over the other, ie jackery???
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures
@Yorkshirepoptopadventures 2 жыл бұрын
Doh I knew I'd miss something out 🤣🤣! Basically, 720wh is a better wattage per ££ than the Jackery. The EcoFlow has the option to add on more batteries plus it has 2 X 240v plug sockets and I prefer the screen readout on the River Pro too ;) One of the biggest reasons (for me) was charge time, 80% in 1hr or full in 1hr 30m - (on mains) which nothing I know of (yet) comes close!

Hi mate. I'm about to start my electrics in my conversion. Was thinking about using one of these to power the whole van. But my only concern is, does it switch itself off after not being used for a while. Would I be constantly going into the cupboard to switch it on just to turn the lights on.
