Wow this is a fantastic restore. It's great that the restoration process isn't just one and done. It's a revolving process as stuff is discovered, so I dont mind extra uploads if it means updates and more faithful recreations. I thought the trumpets in the old version at 58 seconds in sounded like Mario Kart snes samples. This rectifies that, changes the harmonica to an accurate sample and i think the high hats also received a sample update. Good stuff Xerxes, and to Shutdown, as they both contributed to making this what it is.

The more I listen to this, the more I'm getting a specific vibe and an understanding of what Xerxes was going for. This new remaster seems to answer the question "What would it sound like if we kept all the eccentricities of the SNES -- the pitch bends, sharpening, looping, and all the other tricks and compromise required to squeeze this song into the limited storage of an SNES, but upped the resolution?" Xerxes' remaster sounds like a SNES on steroids. Shutdown's restore probably sounds like what the song sounded like in Kondo's studio on the original hardware before he had to make all those compromises to make it work on an SNES. While shutdown's remaster isn't perfect, I have to say I am leaning towards it in preference.

Nothing about the brass feels jarring in this mix so that's an good improvement. Some saying overall it's flatter. Maybe, but it's now a higher quality version of the SNES original, which is the goal.

Yet again great stuff! I'm addicted to these uploads, thanks for doing these. I also downloaded the Sound Ideas Sampler Library that you linked on Twitter where you found the whistle and fiddle samples for Mario 64. I also discovered by accident in this library that the S-550 Big Strings samples are there as well (I assume they stole it from the S-550). The file names are 0102-02-01 through 0102-02-11, which -07 is the sample used for A Link To The Past spread across the keyboard. Thanks to you, I have made my own .sf2 files, one for the game soundfont using the -07 sample and one for the original S-550 Big Strings patch. Keep going with the uploads!

If your goal was to get me to A-B compare this version and the last version repeatedly to up the engagement, mission accomplished. :P My first reaction to this version was negative, but it's growing on me. It's definitely a lot crunchier. The older restore is softer. I can see the beauty in both. The new Athletic is undoubtedly better. It's like removing the cotton from my ears compared to the previous already spiffy restore.

Maybe it's simply the compression in the original, but it seems like the snare drum isn't as punchy. It sounds more tinny? Subjectively this track is always memorable to me for its powerful percussion so maybe this is part of the echo feedback people are giving? And timeline-wise in Kondo's career, he was definitely in a punchy percussion mood. The beta version of Bob-omb battlefield, the next song he most likely worked on, has a much punchier percussion sample that he toned down for the final release. Love the work though, y'all rock!
@mmr22413 жыл бұрын
It's because of the sample rate of the sample which is at 16khz and also the s-dsp interpolation which cuts the treble a lot.

Wait, so has the harmonica been changed to be more accurate to the actual samples used, or was the sample changed to be more accurate to how it sounded when compressed, just without the actual compression part? Like, I know there was a missing echo, but the sound seems to be edited more than just that.
