Yoshi's Story is a game that has always lived in the shadow of its predecessor, Yoshi's Island. A lot of reviews of this game rip into it for being too easy, for being a game made for babies. But in this video, I, Jonii, am here to explain why I love this underappreciated Nintendo 64 masterpiece and why being made for a younger audience isn't always a bad thing.

When 64 games finally came to the Switch, and I turned on Yoshi's Story naturally, and sat through the intro with my sister. A few moments later, I heard the TV upstairs turn off and footsteps come downstairs. My mother opened the door and was like 'I heard Yoshi Story'. Even over twenty years later, this game's still unforgettable.

It was a great game for children who were new to video games - colorful cutesy graphics and music, simple gameplay, and a difficulty that suits everybody. If you're new, you can just grab a couple hearts and eat random fruits to get through the game, then eventually try to get all hearts in all levels, and do melon-only runs, which can really leave you stumped at points. It's the perfect platformer for kids - It's a shame that a lot of reviewers seem to ignore that it wasn't made for an audience of 30 years old jaded hardcore gamers.

Yeah, that would've been nice, given how stingy the game is with its "life system". Imagine playing through Yoshi's Island to 100% completion with so much as 6 measly lives, and only with one chance to regain one of them per level (the White Shy Guys). That would just be madness!

6:55 Yoshi actually took infinite hits while the timer would run out, which was why later stages would be littered with one-hit KO traps. Taking all those hits would only stun Yoshi, while a spike or a thorn or *PRETTY BEAUTIFUL LAVA* would one-shot him.

I have to admit that the ending of this video made me feel quite emotional; I actually owned Yoshi Story as a kid along with many other N64 games, and while I DID suffer the N64 Control Stick issue where I would have to push the stick hard just to run as it was quite worn out, I felt really happy when I could beat it for the first time and then weep with the "The End" screen with a looping music box-like jingle of the main theme (and for that matter, I used to be terrified of dying because of the scene with the Yoshis getting carried away to a creepy castle, to the point that I can recall that at first I used to jump off bed and run to the N64 to turn it off immediately to both avoid watching that and not lose a Yoshi). I also sit through today through some of your Monkey Ball videos...man I hope that this channel blows up, because it spits nothing but facts and fun (seriously, I love how much jokes you put on these) and I'd like to see more people see this :)

This is one of the games that my mom also played through and beat when I was a kid. She also played a few of the Sonic games, and Kirby All Star. I felt so accomplished being able to beat a game, just like my older sister could! It brought me into gaming and that was such a huge part of my life, it’s how I met my best friend in high school, it’s how I first connected with my now husband, and now we have a son together and hope that he has great games to bring him as much joy as my husband and I had. Was trying to think of any really good looking N64 games but it's been so long and the visuals of the system have aged so much I can't even begin to think of what I'd call really standout visuals for the system lol. Maybe Rogue Squadron, the ship models looked amazing for the time, as did the ones in the sequel which still look amazing for a GameCube launch title. Things like this and Paper Mario really got around the limitations of the time with their artstyle choices. This almost looks like an early GameCube game in parts

Yoshi story are the one of my favorite game. The art style, and game play always amaze me. The basic game are in "easy mode" since you can just gulp all the fruit scattered, but you can challenge your self by just eating one kind of fruit and get special ending of stage. Also for the expert, try eating only melons, some of them showed up by "sniffing" it, and some just showed up once in some specific challenge per stage. ;)

Overall Yoshi's Story just had so many things working against it. The departure in gameplay emphasis from Yoshi's Island was already an uphill climb with certain fans, but the popular value of 2D platformers in general plummeted around the time of its release and it would take years for it to come back. Throw in the reputation about its simple difficulty and you had a scenario seemingly tailor made to downplay its presence. While I do think today its an environment far more open to artistically distinct, albeit breezy platformers (see the affection for Kirby's Epic Yarn), the image of Yoshi's Story as too easy for older fans is still haunting it, especially in comparison to the well received approach of the more variable difficulty in Woolly World or Crafted World.

This game was my favorite as a kid and still has a precious place in my heart. It is so good and so mysterious. My family and I remember finding an Orange and a Purple Egg in the game (Same as the Black and White) to unlock more Yoshis, but we were kids and my parent were even worst at video game. Each time we discovered an egg, we had difficulies bringing it back because we were always dying. Before the orange and purple Yoshis began to appears we played a lot. We were 3 brothers and my 2 parents playing on it because it was our only game lmao. I thought maybe it is really rare to find those special orange and purple Yoshis because you have to play the levels in a special order, and/or collect all the hearts and Melons, and or all the coins... But i did not get any answers about it. I even write to nintendo many years ago and they answered me back saying they could not tell if there is or not more Yoshis in the game than the Black and the White one....maybe its pretty rare to encounter one of these, maybe I own a particular version of the game, or maybe it is simple hallucinations, but everyone in my family remembers...this is very strange...one day my brother started to play again and erased all datas on it....i started to play on it a months ago on my old nintendo 64, trying to get all coins an everything, still no clue...I know some people won't believe my story, I know some others explained it was supposed to be these 2 Yoshis in the game but they changed it for the white and black for the official release, I know everyone thinks it's a myth, and I am sure, many persons looked at the game program and maybe they found nothing, but for my family and I, this is real. Maybe someday I will have my answer. But for sure Yoshi Story was and still is a wonderful part of my childhood and my life.

There is people that barely can play videogames but suddenly they are judges and executioners of games that don't have the chance to be exposed both good and bad. My idea was exactly that showing the usual conceptions , aboard the gameplay and show people how moderate to enthusiasts do have fun with the game, cause other people would just rant and call it shit a la Arin Hanson Egoraptor. Every Time I hear the Smash version of Yoshi's Story End theme I get reminded of the time at a smash tournament where the entire crowd sang along.

I think this game has so many thing in common with star fox 64, and people still call yoshi's story a bad experience and think starfox is one of best games on the platform. Both games you can finish in about an hour, but have multiple paths you can take to make it infinitly replayable. Yoshi's story also has my second favorite artstyle of the series, next to crafted world. And it is centainly not the most easy game in the series, so I don't get peoples complaint on that front. I would even go as far as to say yoshi's story is probably in my top 10 favorite n64 games!

This was my childhood Yoshi game. I would rent it from my local video rental store, which I would add to my personal collection once it went out of business. It’s sentimental to me due to my memories of that particular video rental store growing up

I just don't know how to make this game fun again now that I've grown. Collecting any fruit is too easy, and going for only melons is boring because the sniffing mechanic is obnoxious to use every few inches of the map, and it's not fun at all.

4:59 - Quick to beat, but plenty to replay is a mentality I do like to see in my games, an is part of why I like the Kirby series and (compared to other JRPG's length) Pokémon series. I'm glad to see Yoshi's Story receive some love, with plenty of praise to it's strengths here and even some interesting trivia that I never knew about through exploring it's speed-running community.

I downloaded this game on the wii virtual console as a kid and loved the game. Haven’t played the game in years. Might have to go back and play it soon.

Yoshi's Story was probably my first time feeling like I'd been bait-and-switched. In its early development it was being touted as Yoshi's Island 64, but it was so lacklustre by comparison. Sure there was secret stuff to find, but the game noticeably didn't reward or even record it in any tangible way*, so it felt pointless. When I first managed to 100% a level, I felt like the game never even intended for me to do such a thing, so I had no interest in doing the rest. So my issue with the game wasn't that it was "for babies" or "too easy." It was the way it presented me with challenges, but once I completed any of them the game went "so what?" *keeping a score tally from which you may kinda infer successfully gathering all melons and heart fruits doesn't count - there are other ways to score over 3400 points on a level
